    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.     Production of He-4 and (4) in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S=2.76 TeV at the LHC

    Results on the production of He-4 and (4) nuclei in Pb-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 2.76 TeV in the rapidity range vertical bar y vertical bar <1, using the ALICE detector, are presented in this paper. The rapidity densities corresponding to 0-10% central events are found to be dN/dy4(He) = (0.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10(-6) and dN/dy4 = (1.1 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-6), respectively. This is in agreement with the statistical thermal model expectation assuming the same chemical freeze-out temperature (T-chem = 156 MeV) as for light hadrons. The measured ratio of (4)/He-4 is 1.4 +/- 0.8 (stat) +/- 0.5 (syst). (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe

    Elliptic flow of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays at forward rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76TeV

    The elliptic flow, v(2), of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays at forward rapidity (2.5 <y <4) is measured in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)= 2.76TeVwith the ALICE detector at the LHC. The scalar product, two- and four-particle Q cumulants and Lee-Yang zeros methods are used. The dependence of the v(2) of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays on the collision centrality, in the range 0-40%, and on transverse momentum, p(T), is studied in the interval 3 <p(T)<10 GeV/c. A positive v(2) is observed with the scalar product and two-particle Q cumulants in semi-central collisions (10-20% and 20-40% centrality classes) for the p(T) interval from 3 to about 5GeV/c with a significance larger than 3 sigma, based on the combination of statistical and systematic uncertainties. The v(2) magnitude tends to decrease towards more central collisions and with increasing pT. It becomes compatible with zero in the interval 6 <p(T)<10 GeV/c. The results are compared to models describing the interaction of heavy quarks and open heavy-flavour hadrons with the high-density medium formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.     Pseudorapidity and transverse-momentum distributions of charged particles in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    The pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse-momentum (p(T)) distributions of charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions are measured at the centre-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV. The pseudorapidity distribution in vertical bar eta vertical bar <1.8 is reported for inelastic events and for events with at least one charged particle in vertical bar eta vertical bar <1. The pseudorapidity density of charged particles produced in the pseudorapidity region vertical bar eta vertical bar <0.5 is 5.31 +/- 0.18 and 6.46 +/- 0.19 for the two event classes, respectively. The transverse-momentum distribution of charged particles is measured in the range 0.15 <p(T) <20 GeV/c and vertical bar eta vertical bar <0.8 for events with at least one charged particle in vertical bar eta vertical bar <1. The evolution of the transverse momentum spectra of charged particles is also investigated as a function of event multiplicity.     Preclinical imaging is mostly performed on mouse animal models (61%). It is a necessary step in preclinical research, in compliance the first two recommendations of the 3Rs rules (reduction, refinement and replacement). In order to give a biological significance to measurements extracted from in vivo-acquired mouse images, it is necessary to evaluate instruments performances but also experimental procedures involved. The qualification of apparatuses requires the use of specific phantoms while the evaluation of methods requires procedures tests on non-pathological animals before experimentations. The scope of this work was to develop tools and methods to qualify imaging instruments and in vivo procedures. The need for quantification in small animal imaging, leads us to consider preclinical imaging instruments as metrological tools; which means integrating measurement uncertainty into.L’imagerie préclinique se pratique majoritairement sur des modèles animaux murins principalement des souris (61%), elle représente une étape indispensable en recherche préclinique car elle suit les deux premières recommandations de la règle des 3R (réduction, raffinement et remplacement). Pour donner une signification biologique aux mesures extraites des images acquises in vivo chez la souris, il est nécessaire d’évaluer les performances des instruments utilisés mais également des procédures expérimentales en jeu. La qualification des appareils nécessite l’usage de fantômes spécifiques, et l’évaluation des méthodes impose de tester les procédures sur des individus non pathologiques, avant le passage aux expérimentations proprement dites. L’objectif de ce travail a été de développer des outils et des méthodes permettant de qualifier les instruments d’imagerie et certaines procédures in vivo. La nécessité de quantification, à partir d’images réalisées chez le petit animal, nous amène à considérer les instruments d’imagerie préclinique comme des outils métrologiques ; ce qui amène à intégrer le principe d’incertitude de mesure dans l’expression des résultats

    A Visual Computer Tool for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy Preoperative Planning

    International audienceThe percutaneous nephrolithotomy is a minimally invasive surgery that is employed to remove larger stones (calculi) in the kidney. This technique places a nephroscope into the kidney through a small tract set after a small incision in the patients back. During the tract positioning, there are risks of kidney bleeding and of injury of other organs near the kidney such as the bowels, spleen or lever. In order to minimize this risks a preoperative planning helps for the choice of the best kidney calyx target and for the definition of the optimal track to reach this target. Our study is focused on the development of a computer tool that will help establishing the preoperative planning on patient specific data. Especially, this tool allows defining interactively and visually the optimal track on a 3D volume data acquired on the patient, simulating the effect on the anatomy of the real passageway and finally gives the necessary information back to the surgeon in order to transpose during the intervention the defined optimal trac

    Development and Evaluation of a CT Pulmonary Angiography Protocol Dedicated to Pregnant and Postpartum Women

    International audienceIntroduction: This study presents and evaluates a CT pulmonary angiography protocol dedicated to pregnant women. The specific feature of this protocol is to place the region of interest (ROI) (bolus detection) in the superior vena cava. The objective is to evaluate the performances of this method.Materials and methods: The protocol uses a iodine-based contrast agent at 300mgI/mL and an injection rate of 5 to 6 mL/sec for an injection volume of 50 mL of iodine contrast agent followed by 40 mL of NaCl. The ROI is positioned on the superior vena cava, with a 100 Hounsfield units (HU) threshold, and the acquisition is performed at 100 kVp. This protocol was evaluated retrospectively on a large population (n = 105: group 1) and compared with a control group that did not benefit from this protocol (n = 55: group 2). Both groups were studied on the same device in the same center. Each examination was evaluated and classified into 3 groups: optimal, suboptimal, and noncontributory. Dose length products (DLP) values were also recorded. Statistical tests were applied to the data collected.Results: The rate of noncontributory examinations increased from 43.1% for the control group to 4.8% for the new protocol group. The reference enhancement level in the pulmonary trunk is 250 UH. The mean enhancement in the pulmonary trunk of the new protocol group (332 HU (±71 HU (±71 HU)) is significantly greater than the reference value of 250 HU (P .05), which has a mean enhancement of 239 HU (±87 HU). The control group had a mean DLP of 225 mGy.cm (±81 mGy.cm), and the new-protocol group had a mean DLP of 189 mGy.cm (±75 mGy.cm).Discussion: Our noncontributory examination rate is the lowest rate described in the literature. Our protocol contradicts standard practices of placing an ROI in the pulmonary trunk for bolus detection of iodinated contrast media.Conclusion: The results of this study showed that this protocol reduces the number of noncontributory examinations while reducing the dose delivered to patients. This robust protocol is applicable to other devices and meets perfectly radiation-safety requirements and injected contrast media volume limitation
