Quantum and classical criticalities in the frustrated two-leg Heisenberg ladder
This talk was about the frustration-induced criticality in the
antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the two-leg ladder with exchange
interactions along the chains, rungs, and diagonals, and also about the effect
of thermal fluctuations on this criticlity. The method used is the bond
mean-field theory, which is based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation in
dimensions higher than one. In this paper, we will summarize the main results
presented in this talk, and report on new results about the couplings and
temperature dependences of the spin susceptibility.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, talk presented at the Theory Canada 3 conference

A serological survey of bovine babesiosis in northern and eastern Zimbabwe
The geographical distribution of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina antibodies in communal herds
in northern and eastern Zimbabwe was determined using the ELISA technique. The animals in different
herds in the study region had different levels of natural exposure to B. bovis (mean 32 %, range
0-79%) and B. bigemina (mean 52%, range 5-92%) infections. The majority of herds (90%) were
endemically unstable for B. bigemina and 62 % were unstable for B. bovis. Natural region 5 and
Manicaland province had the highest seroprevalence of B. bovis infection, while natural region 5 and
Masvingo province had the highest seroprevalence of B. bigemina infection. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.

Branch-and-lift algorithm for deterministic global optimization in nonlinear optimal control
This paper presents a branch-and-lift algorithm for solving optimal control problems with smooth nonlinear dynamics and potentially nonconvex objective and constraint functionals to guaranteed global optimality. This algorithm features a direct sequential method and builds upon a generic, spatial branch-and-bound algorithm. A new operation, called lifting, is introduced, which refines the control parameterization via a Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process, while simultaneously eliminating control subregions that are either infeasible or that provably cannot contain any global optima. Conditions are given under which the image of the control parameterization error in the state space contracts exponentially as the parameterization order is increased, thereby making the lifting operation efficient. A computational technique based on ellipsoidal calculus is also developed that satisfies these conditions. The practical applicability of branch-and-lift is illustrated in a numerical example. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York
Wetting films on chemically heterogeneous substrates
Based on a microscopic density functional theory we investigate the
morphology of thin liquidlike wetting films adsorbed on substrates endowed with
well-defined chemical heterogeneities. As paradigmatic cases we focus on a
single chemical step and on a single stripe. In view of applications in
microfluidics the accuracy of guiding liquids by chemical microchannels is
discussed. Finally we give a general prescription of how to investigate
theoretically the wetting properties of substrates with arbitrary chemical
structures.Comment: 56 pages, RevTeX, 20 Figure
Cable-driven parallel robot for curtain wall module installation
A cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR) was developed for the installation of curtain wall modules (CWM). The research addressed the question of whether the CDPR was capable installing CWMs with sufficient accuracy while being competitive compared to conventional manual methods. In order to develop and test such a system, a conceptual framework that consisted of three sub-systems was defined. The tests, carried out in two close-to-real demonstration buildings, revealed an absolute accuracy of the CWM installation of 4 to 23 mm. The working time for installing a CWM was reduced to 0.51 h. The results also show that the system is competitive for a workspace greater than 96 m2 compared to conventional manual methods. However, improvements such as reducing the hours for setting up the CDPR on the one hand and achieving a faster and more robust MEE on the other hand will be still necessary in the future. This project has received funding from the European Unionâs Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant

First Results from the Arcminute Cosmology Bolometer Array Receiver
We review the first science results from the Arcminute Cosmology Bolometer
Array Receiver (ACBAR); a multifrequency millimeter-wave receiver optimized for
observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and the
Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in clusters of galaxies. ACBAR was installed on
the 2 m Viper telescope at the South Pole in January 2001 and the results
presented here incorporate data through July 2002. We present the power
spectrum of the CMB at 150 GHz over the range \ell = 150 - 3000 measured by
ACBAR as well as estimates for the values of the cosmological parameters within
the context of Lambda-CDM models. We find that the inclusion of Omega_Lambda
greatly improves the fit to the power spectrum. We also observe a slight excess
of small-scale anisotropy at 150 GHz; if interpreted as power from the SZ
effect of unresolved clusters, the measured signal is consistent with CBI and
BIMA within the context of the SZ power spectrum models tested.Comment: To be published in the proceedings of "The Cosmic Microwave

Hadron Energy Reconstruction for the ATLAS Calorimetry in the Framework of the Non-parametrical Method
This paper discusses hadron energy reconstruction for the ATLAS barrel
prototype combined calorimeter (consisting of a lead-liquid argon
electromagnetic part and an iron-scintillator hadronic part) in the framework
of the non-parametrical method. The non-parametrical method utilizes only the
known ratios and the electron calibration constants and does not require
the determination of any parameters by a minimization technique. Thus, this
technique lends itself to an easy use in a first level trigger. The
reconstructed mean values of the hadron energies are within of the
true values and the fractional energy resolution is . The value of the ratio
obtained for the electromagnetic compartment of the combined calorimeter is
and agrees with the prediction that for this
electromagnetic calorimeter. Results of a study of the longitudinal hadronic
shower development are also presented. The data have been taken in the H8 beam
line of the CERN SPS using pions of energies from 10 to 300 GeV.Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, Will be published in NIM
Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables,
