    Astrophysical S-factors for fusion reactions involving C, O, Ne and Mg isotopes

    Using the Sao Paulo potential and the barrier penetration formalism we have calculated the astrophysical factor S(E) for 946 fusion reactions involving stable and neutron-rich isotopes of C, O, Ne, and Mg for center-of-mass energies E varying from 2 MeV to 18-30 MeV (covering the range below and above the Coulomb barrier). We have parameterized the energy dependence S(E) by an accurate universal 9-parameter analytic expression and present tables of fit parameters for all the reactions. We also discuss the reduced 3-parameter version of our fit which is highly accurate at energies below the Coulomb barrier, and outline the procedure for calculating the reaction rates. The results can be easily converted to thermonuclear or pycnonuclear reaction rates to simulate various nuclear burning phenomena, in particular, stellar burning at high temperatures and nucleosynthesis in high density environments.Comment: 30 pages including 11 tables, 4 figures, ADNDT, accepte

    Isoforms of Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) are increased in chronic diseases of the kidney but not of the liver

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The levels of retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) – the carrier protein for Vitamin A in plasma – are tightly regulated under healthy circumstances. The kidney, the main site of RBP4 catabolism, contributes to an elevation of RBP4 levels during chronic kidney disease (CKD) whereas during chronic liver disease (CLD) RBP4 levels decrease. Little is known about RBP4 isoforms including apo-RBP4, holo-RBP4 as well as RBP4 truncated at the C-terminus (RBP4-L and RBP4-LL) except that RBP4 isoforms have been reported to be increased in hemodialysis patients. Since it is not known whether CLD influence RBP4 isoforms, we investigated RBP4 levels, apo- and holo-RBP4 as well as RBP4-L and RBP4-LL in plasma of 36 patients suffering from CKD, in 55 CLD patients and in 50 control subjects. RBP4 was determined by ELISA and apo- and holo-RBP4 by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). RBP4-L and RBP4-LL were analyzed after immunoprecipitation by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>RBP4 isoforms and levels were highly increased in CKD patients compared to controls (P < 0.05) whereas in CLD patients RBP4 isoforms were not different from controls. In addition, in hepatic dysfunction RBP4 levels were decreased whereas the amount of isoforms was not affected.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The occurrence of RBP4 isoforms is not influenced by liver function but seems to be strongly related to kidney function and may therefore be important in investigating kidney function and related disorders.</p

    Plasma endotrophin, reflecting tissue fibrosis, is associated with graft failure and mortality in KTR:results from two prospective cohort studies

    BACKGROUND: Fibrosis is a suggested cause of graft failure and mortality among kidney transplant recipients (KTR). Accumulating evidence suggests that collagen type VI is tightly linked to fibrosis, and may be a marker of systemic fibrosis and ageing. We studied whether plasma endotrophin, a pro-collagen type VI fragment, is associated with graft failure and mortality among KTR.METHODS: In cohort A, we measured plasma endotrophin in 690 prevalent KTR ≥ 1 year after transplantation (cohort A, 57% male, age 53 ± 13y). The non-overlapping cohort B included 500 incident KTR with serial endotrophin measurements before and after kidney transplantation, to assess trajectories and intra-individual variation of endotrophin.RESULTS: In cohort A, endotrophin was higher in KTR compared to healthy controls. Concentrations were positively associated with female sex, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, markers of inflammation and kidney injury. Importantly, endotrophin was associated with graft failure (HR per doubling: 1.87; 95%CI: 1.07 to 3.28) and mortality (HR per doubling: 2.59; 95%CI: 1.73 to 3.87) independent of potential confounders. Data from cohort B showed that endotrophin concentrations strongly decrease after transplantation, and remain stable during post-transplantation follow-up (intra-individual coefficient of variation: 5.0% [3.7%-7.6%]).CONCLUSIONS: Plasma endotrophin is strongly associated with graft failure and mortality among KTR. These findings suggest a key role of abnormal extracellular matrix turnover and fibrosis in graft and patient prognosis among KTR, and highlight the need for (interventional) studies targeting the pro-fibrotic state of KTR. The intra-individual stability after transplantation indicates potential use of endotrophin as a biomarker and outcome measure of fibrosis.</p

    Assessment of anti-inflammatory tumor treatment efficacy by longitudinal monitoring employing sonographic micro morphology in a preclinical mouse model

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>With the development of increasingly sophisticated three-dimensional volumetric imaging methods, tumor volume can serve as a robust and reproducible measurement of drug efficacy. Since the use of molecularly targeted agents in the clinic will almost certainly involve combinations with other therapeutic modalities, the use of volumetric determination can help to identify a dosing schedule of sequential combinations of cytostatic drugs resulting in long term control of tumor growth with minimal toxicity. The aim of this study is to assess high resolution sonography imaging for the in vivo monitoring of efficacy of Infliximab in pancreatic tumor.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In the first experiment, primary orthotopic pancreatic tumor growth was measured with Infliximab treatment. In the second experiment, orthotopic tumors were resected ten days after inoculation of tumor cells and tumor recurrence was measured following Infliximab treatment. Tumor progression was evaluated using 3D high resolution sonography.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Sonography measurement of tumor volume in vivo showed inhibitory effect of Infliximab on primary tumor growth in both non-resected and resected models. Measurement of the dynamics of tumor growth by sonography revealed that in the primary tumor Infliximab is effective against established tumors while in the resection model, Infliximab is more effective at an early stage following tumor resection. Infliximab treatment is also effective in inhibiting tumor growth growth as a result of tumor cell contamination of the surgical field.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Clinical application of Infliximab is feasible in both the neoadjuvant and adjuvant setting. Infliximab is also effective in slowing the growth of tumor growth under the peritoneum and may have application in treating peritoneal carcinomatosis. Finally the study demonstrates that high resolution sonography is a sensitive imaging modality for the measurement of pancreatic tumor growth.</p

    Search for squarks and gluinos in events with isolated leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum at s√=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing at least one isolated lepton (electron or muon), jets and large missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s√=8 TeV collected in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb−1. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits are set on supersymmetric particle masses for various supersymmetric models. Depending on the model, the search excludes gluino masses up to 1.32 TeV and squark masses up to 840 GeV. Limits are also set on the parameters of a minimal universal extra dimension model, excluding a compactification radius of 1/R c = 950 GeV for a cut-off scale times radius (ΛR c) of approximately 30

    Evidence for the Higgs-boson Yukawa coupling to tau leptons with the ATLAS detector

    Results of a search for H → τ τ decays are presented, based on the full set of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC during 2011 and 2012. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 4.5 fb−1 and 20.3 fb−1 at centre-of-mass energies of √s = 7 TeV and √s = 8 TeV respectively. All combinations of leptonic (τ → `νν¯ with ` = e, µ) and hadronic (τ → hadrons ν) tau decays are considered. An excess of events over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.5 (3.4) standard deviations. This excess provides evidence for the direct coupling of the recently discovered Higgs boson to fermions. The measured signal strength, normalised to the Standard Model expectation, of µ = 1.43 +0.43 −0.37 is consistent with the predicted Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model

    Pretransplant endotrophin predicts delayed graft function after kidney transplantation

    Delayed graft function after kidney transplantation is common and increases morbidity and health care costs. There is evidence that endotrophin, a specific fragment of pro-collagen type VI, promotes the inflammatory response in kidney diseases. We tested the hypothesis that pretransplant endotrophin in kidney transplant recipients may be associated with the risk of delayed graft function. Pretransplant plasma endotrophin was assessed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in three independent cohorts with 806 kidney transplant recipients. The primary outcome was delayed graft function, i.e., the necessity of at least one dialysis session within one-week posttransplant. In the discovery cohort median pretransplant plasma endotrophin was higher in 32 recipients (12%) who showed delayed graft function when compared to 225 recipients without delayed graft function (58.4 ng/mL [IQR 33.4–69.0]; N = 32; vs. 39.5 ng/mL [IQR 30.6–54.5]; N = 225; P = 0.009). Multivariable logistic regression, fully adjusted for confounders showed, that pretransplant plasma endotrophin as a continuous variable was independently associated with delayed graft function in both validation cohorts, odds ratio 2.09 [95% CI 1.30–3.36] and 2.06 [95% CI 1.43–2.97]. Pretransplant plasma endotrophin, a potentially modifiable factor, was independently associated with increased risk of delayed graft function and may be a new avenue for therapeutic interventions

    Expression profile of the N-myc Downstream Regulated Gene 2 (NDRG2) in human cancers with focus on breast cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several studies have shown that <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA is down-regulated or undetectable in various human cancers and cancer cell-lines. Although the function of <it>NDRG2 </it>is currently unknown, high <it>NDRG2 </it>expression correlates with improved prognosis in high-grade gliomas, gastric cancer and hepatocellular carcinomas. Furthermore, <it>in vitro </it>studies have revealed that over-expression of NDRG2 in cell-lines causes a significant reduction in their growth. The aim of this study was to examine levels of <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA in several human cancers, with focus on breast cancer, by examining affected and normal tissue.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>By labelling a human Cancer Profiling Array with a radioactive probe against <it>NDRG2</it>, we evaluated the level of <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA in 154 paired normal and tumor samples encompassing 19 different human cancers. Furthermore, we used quantitative real-time RT-PCR to quantify the levels of <it>NDRG2 </it>and <it>MYC </it>mRNA in thyroid gland cancer and breast cancer, using a distinct set of normal and tumor samples.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>From the Cancer Profiling Array, we saw that the level of <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA was reduced by at least 2-fold in almost a third of the tumor samples, compared to the normal counterpart, and we observed a marked decreased level in colon, cervix, thyroid gland and testis. However, a Benjamini-Hochberg correction showed that none of the tissues showed a significant reduction in <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA expression in tumor tissue compared to normal tissue. Using quantitative RT-PCR, we observed a significant reduction in the level of <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA in a distinct set of tumor samples from both thyroid gland cancer (p = 0.02) and breast cancer (p = 0.004), compared with normal tissue. <it>MYC </it>mRNA was not significantly altered in breast cancer or in thyroid gland cancer, compared with normal tissue. In thyroid gland, no correlation was found between <it>MYC </it>and <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA levels, but in breast tissue we found a weakly significant correlation with a positive r-value in both normal and tumor tissues, suggesting that <it>MYC </it>and <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA are regulated together.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Expression of <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA is reduced in many different human cancers. Using quantitative RT-PCR, we have verified a reduction in thyroid cancer and shown, for the first time, that <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA is statistically significantly down-regulated in breast cancer. Furthermore, our observations indicate that other tissues such as cervix and testis can have lower levels of <it>NDRG2 </it>mRNA in tumor tissue compared to normal tissue.</p
