Infective endocarditis has different presentations depending on the involvement of valvular and perivalvular structures. Despite the improvements made in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, it still has a high morbidity and mortality. Aorto-cavitary fistulae is a rare complication. We introduce the case of a 79 year-old male with native valve endocarditis, complicated by aortocavitary fistulae to the left ventricle, a really unusual presentation.

[EN] Ribera is an abandoned village in the natural park of Valderejo, the only remaining building is an old church. The reason why this building was spared from demolition is the presence of medieval wall paintings. In any case, the state of the building is rather bad (for instance, the sacristy collapsed two years after this work was done).Starting from a previous 3D model of the church, a meshed version of this model was developed and given photographic textures from a new collection of photographs taken on site.[ES] Memoria del proyecto (18 páginas en formato PDF) y 8 fotografías de documentación (formato JPEG).[EN] Report in Spanish (18 pages in format PDF) and 8 photographs for documentation purposes (JPEG)

Grain-Size Prediction Model in Aluminum Castings Manufactured by Low-Pressure Technology

    Get PDF
The grain refinement in a real casting manufactured by Low Pressure Die Casting (LPDC) such as wheels and steering knuckles depends on the grain-refinement potential of the metal and the geometry of the part/process parameters. For this study, the effect of the cooling rate on the AlSi7Mg alloy with different metal qualities in terms of grain refinement was tested. The grain size has been metallographically evaluated in cylindrical test pieces and in the real wheels and steering knuckles manufactured at the Mapsa and Fagor Ederlan foundries. The Thermolan®-Al system has been used to evaluate the nucleation potential in terms of grain size on a standard cup. The grain size has been modeled taking into account the effect of the cooling rate measured in the center of the cylindrical test parts and the different grain-size potential. Different grades of refinement have been tested. The grain size measured in a real casting (wheel and steering knuckle) was used to calibrate the model for a real part in LPDC for different grain-size potential

[EN] San Prudencio’s basilica (formely dedicated to San Andrés) was in its origin a Romanesque church with cross-shaped plan. During 18th century an important restoration concealed it inside a rectangular building of around 20 by 40 meters. It has semicircular apse, one tower, dome and some remains of conventual dependencies. The outside of the church was documented by stereoscopic photogrammetry (both analogical and digital ones). Pairs were stereoplotted in order to get the wireframe model including the sculptures. On the other hand, the inside part was documented by means of total station. The results include a 3D model and a collection of plan. [EN] General report (106 pages in Spanish) format PDF + 10 photographs for documentation purposes (JPEG) + one virtual model (wireframe) of the portico in VRML format

Background: Multidisciplinary collaboration is defined as a collective work involving multiple disciplines and is common in clinical care and research. Our aim was to describe current clinical and research collaboration among young specialists and to identify unmet needs in this area. Methods: An online survey was disseminated by email and social media to members of the EMerging EUlar NETwork, the Young Nephrologists’ Platform, the Paediatric Rheumatology European Society Emerging Rheumatologists and Researchers and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Junior Members. Results: Of 303 respondents from 36 countries, 61% were female, 21% were aged below 30 years and 67% were aged 31–40 years. Young rheumatologists were the most represented (39%), followed by young nephrologists (24%), young paediatricians (20%), young allergologists (11%) then young internists (3%) and 3% other specialities. Collaborations were reported frequently by phone and email, also by various combined clinics while common local multidisciplinary meetings were uncommon. 96% would like to develop clinical research collaborations and 69% basic research collaborations. The majority of young specialists would be interested in online (84%) and/or 1–2 days (85%) common courses including case discussion (81%) and training workshops (85%), as well as webinars recorded with several specialists on a specific disease (96%). Conclusions: This collaborative initiative highlighted wishes from young specialists for developing (1) regular local multidisciplinary meetings to discuss complex patients, (2) clinical research collaboration with combined grants and (3) multidisciplinary online projects such as common courses, webinars and apps

    The ocean sampling day consortium

    Get PDF
Ocean Sampling Day was initiated by the EU-funded Micro B3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology) project to obtain a snapshot of the marine microbial biodiversity and function of the world’s oceans. It is a simultaneous global mega-sequencing campaign aiming to generate the largest standardized microbial data set in a single day. This will be achievable only through the coordinated efforts of an Ocean Sampling Day Consortium, supportive partnerships and networks between sites. This commentary outlines the establishment, function and aims of the Consortium and describes our vision for a sustainable study of marine microbial communities and their embedded functional traits

Targeting Ultrasmall Gold Nanoparticles with cRGD Peptide Increases the Uptake and Efficacy of Cytotoxic Payload

Cyclic arginyl-glycyl-aspartic acid peptide (cRGD) peptides show a high affinity towards αVβ3 integrin, a receptor overexpressed in many cancers. We aimed to combine the versatility of ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (usGNP) with the target selectivity of cRGD peptide for the directed delivery of a cytotoxic payload in a novel design. usGNPs were synthesized with a modified Brust-Schiffrin method and functionalized via amide coupling and ligand exchange and their uptake, intracellular trafficking, and toxicity were characterized. Our cRGD functionalized usGNPs demonstrated increased cellular uptake by αVβ3 integrin expressing cells, are internalized via clathrin-dependent endocytosis, accumulated in the lysosomes, and when loaded with mertansine led to increased cytotoxicity. Targeting via cRGD functionalization provides a mechanism to improve the efficacy, tolerability, and retention of therapeutic GNPs
