The dune field contained several dune types. The barchan was the most common form; seif and triangular dunes were also sighted. Conditions necessary for dune formation included winds from a constant direction and a flat ice surface. Dunes were not seen on the ice where pressure ridges existed

    Role of Dendritic Cell Subsets in Immunity and Their Contribution to Non-infectious Uveitis

    Dendritic cells (DCs) are a heterogeneous population. Murine DCs consist of conventional DCs (cDCs) and plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs). In human, the analogous populations are myeloid DCs (mDCs) and pDCs. Though distinct in phenotypes and functions, studies have shown that these DC subsets may interact or ‘crosstalk’ during immune responses. For example, cDCs may facilitate pDC maturation, while pDCs may enhance antigen presentation of cDCs in certain pathogenic conditions or even take on a cDC phenotype themselves. The role of DCs in non-infectious uveitis has been studied primarily in the experimental autoimmune uveitis mouse model and to a more limited extent in patients. Recent evidence shows that the number, phenotype and function of DC subsets are altered in this disease. We provide an overview of selected recent developments of pDCs and cDCs/mDCs, with special attention to their interaction and the dual roles of DC subsets in non-infectious uveitis

    Serum α-Tocopherol Concentration in Relation to Subsequent Colorectal Cancer: Pooled Data From Five Cohorts

    Background Numerous monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) have been produced to antigens found in human melanomas. Three of the best characterized melanoma antigens include the melanoma-associated glycoproteins (MAGs) defined by two reagent families—the ME491 family (including ME491, 8-1H, and 8-2A) and the NKI/C-3 family (including NKI/C-3 and NKI/black-13)—as well as the neuroglandular antigen (NGA) defined by MAbs LS59, LS62, and LS140. These three antigens have significant similarities in tissue distribution, biosynthesis, and structure. The ME491 MAG has been cloned, mapped, and sequenced. Numerous non-melanoma-associated proteins (Sm23, CO-029, R2, TAPA-1, CD9, CD37, CD53, and CD63) have recently been shown to have significant homology to this sequence. Purpose We conducted this study to investigate the similarity between the two MAG antigens and NGA. Methods Several reagents defining the three different melanoma antigens were compared, using competition immunoprecipitation, immunoas-say, and inhibition radioimmunoassay techniques. Results Immunoassay experiments show that MAbs defining the three melanoma antigens bind to affinity-purified ME491 antigen and inhibit each other from binding in an inhibition radioimmunoassay. Competition immunoprecipitation ex-periments demonstrate that the ME491 and NKI/C-3 antibodies bind to NGA. Rabbit anti-ME491 idiotype serum recognizes determinants shared by NKI/C-3 and the anti-NGA MAbs. A competition immunoprecipitation experiment also confirms the identity of CD63, as defined by MAb RUU-SP 2.28, with the three melanoma antigens. Conclusion These data indicate that the MAGs defined by ME491 and NKI/C-3 as well as the anti-NGA antibodies are epitopes of the same molecule, which is identical to CD63 by both immunochemical and molecular genetic investigations. Implications Our results indicate that the data obtained in studies of these three melanoma antigens may be pooled, and we propose that the molecule recognized by these reagents be classified as CD63.     Background – There is growing evidence in the UK that some National Health Service improvements, particularly in the postnatal period, are having an impact on the quality and variety of student midwives’ clinical experiences, making it challenging for them to meet the standards set by the regulatory body for midwives and receive a licence to practice. A possible solution to this may be the introduction of a Student Midwife integrated Learning Environment (SMiLE) focusing upon the delivery of postnatal care (PN) through a student run clinic Objective - To identify the current state of knowledge, regarding the educational outcomes of students who engage with student run clinics (SRC) and the satisfaction of patients who attend them Search strategy - BNI, CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE were searched for articles published until April 2014. Selection criteria - Studies nationally and internationally, that were carried out on healthcare students running their own clinics. Outcome measures were the evaluation of educational outcomes of students and client satisfaction were included Data collection and analysis - Data were extracted, analysed and synthesised to produce a summary of knowledge, regarding the effectiveness of SRC’s Main results - 6 studies were selected for this review Authors conclusions – The findings that SRC can offer advantages in improving educational outcomes of students and provide an effective service to clients is encouraging. However, given the limited number of high-quality studies included in this review, further research is required to investigate the effectiveness of SR

    Consensus Statement on Bone Conduction Devices and Active Middle Ear Implants in Conductive and Mixed Hearing Loss

    Nowadays, several options are available to treat patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss. Whenever surgical intervention is not possible or contra-indicated, and amplification by a conventional hearing device (e.g., behind-the-ear device) is not feasible, then implantable hearing devices are an indispensable next option. Implantable bone-conduction devices and middle-ear implants have advantages but also limitations concerning complexity/invasiveness of the surgery, medical complications, and effectiveness. To counsel the patient, the clinician should have a good overview of the options with regard to safety and reliability as well as unequivocal technical performance data. The present consensus document is the outcome of an extensive iterative process including ENT specialists, audiologists, health-policy scientists, and representatives/technicians of the main companies in this field. This document should provide a first framework for procedures and technical characterization to enhance effective communication between these stakeholders, improving health care

    Variation in stem mortality rates determines patterns of above-ground biomass in Amazonian forests: implications for dynamic global vegetation models

    Understanding the processes that determine above-ground biomass (AGB) in Amazonian forests is important for predicting the sensitivity of these ecosystems to environmental change and for designing and evaluating dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs). AGB is determined by inputs from woody productivity [woody net primary productivity (NPP)] and the rate at which carbon is lost through tree mortality. Here, we test whether two direct metrics of tree mortality (the absolute rate of woody biomass loss and the rate of stem mortality) and/or woody NPP, control variation in AGB among 167 plots in intact forest across Amazonia. We then compare these relationships and the observed variation in AGB and woody NPP with the predictions of four DGVMs. The observations show that stem mortality rates, rather than absolute rates of woody biomass loss, are the most important predictor of AGB, which is consistent with the importance of stand size structure for determining spatial variation in AGB. The relationship between stem mortality rates and AGB varies among different regions of Amazonia, indicating that variation in wood density and height/diameter relationships also influences AGB. In contrast to previous findings, we find that woody NPP is not correlated with stem mortality rates and is weakly positively correlated with AGB. Across the four models, basin-wide average AGB is similar to the mean of the observations. However, the models consistently overestimate woody NPP and poorly represent the spatial patterns of both AGB and woody NPP estimated using plot data. In marked contrast to the observations, DGVMs typically show strong positive relationships between woody NPP and AGB. Resolving these differences will require incorporating forest size structure, mechanistic models of stem mortality and variation in functional composition in DGVMs
