    Toric moment mappings and Riemannian structures

    Coadjoint orbits for the group SO(6) parametrize Riemannian G-reductions in six dimensions, and we use this correspondence to interpret symplectic fibrations between these orbits, and to analyse moment polytopes associated to the standard Hamiltonian torus action on the coadjoint orbits.     Equation of State for Parallel Rigid Spherocylinders

    The pair distribution function of monodisperse rigid spherocylinders is calculated by Shinomoto's method, which was originally proposed for hard spheres. The equation of state is derived by two different routes: Shinomoto's original route, in which a hard wall is introduced to estimate the pressure exerted on it, and the virial route. The pressure from Shinomoto's original route is valid only when the length-to-width ratio is less than or equal to 0.25 (i.e., when the spherocylinders are nearly spherical). The virial equation of state is shown to agree very well with the results of numerical simulations of spherocylinders with length-to-width ratio greater than or equal to 2

    Flow cytometric analysis of the T cell response in mice infected with Cowdria ruminantium

    A 3-fold increase in the numbers of Lyt-2⁺ T cells in the circulating blood of mice infected and reinfected with the Welgevonden stock of Cowdria ruminantium, as determined by flow cytometry, is supportive evidence that immunity in heartwater is cell-mediated. The rise in Lyt-2⁺ cells only after reinfection of the mice is further evidence that the development of immunity in heartwater is dependent on the unhindered and adequate replication of C. ruminantium.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.     On the Geometry of Super Yang-Mills Theories: Phases and Irreducible Polynomials

    We study the algebraic and geometric structures that underly the space of vacua of N=1 super Yang-Mills theories at the non-perturbative level. Chiral operators are shown to satisfy polynomial equations over appropriate rings, and the phase structure of the theory can be elegantly described by the factorization of these polynomials into irreducible pieces. In particular, this idea yields a powerful method to analyse the possible smooth interpolations between different classical limits in the gauge theory. As an application in U(Nc) theories, we provide a simple and completely general proof of the fact that confining and Higgs vacua are in the same phase when fundamental flavors are present, by finding an irreducible polynomial equation satisfied by the glueball operator. We also derive the full phase diagram for the theory with one adjoint when Nc is less than or equal to 7 using computational algebraic geometry programs.Comment: 87 pages; v2: typos and eq.     The web, together with database technology, has radically changed the way scientific research is conducted. Scientists now have access to an unprecedented quantity and range of data, and the speed and ease of communication of all forms of scientific data has increased hugely. This change has come at a price. Web and database technology no longer support some of the desirable properties of paper publication, and it has introduced new problems in maintaining the scientific record.     The magnetic moment anomaly a_mu = (g_mu - 2) / 2 of the positive muon has been measured at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron with an uncertainty of 0.7 ppm. The new result, based on data taken in 2000, agrees well with previous measurements.     Relationship between well-being and recycling rates: evidence from life satisfaction approach in Britain

    This study explores the relationship between self-reported well-being and recycling rates. The estimates are based on Britain using data from the British Household Panel Survey. The effects of recycling rates on individuals' happiness are estimated. Two approaches are followed. The first approach refers to panel probit-ordinary least squares (OLS). The second approach is the latent class generalised ordered probit. The results support that a significant positive relationship between self-reported well-being and recycling is presented

    Machine Learning in Automated Text Categorization

    The automated categorization (or classification) of texts into predefined categories has witnessed a booming interest in the last ten years, due to the increased availability of documents in digital form and the ensuing need to organize them. In the research community the dominant approach to this problem is based on machine learning techniques: a general inductive process automatically builds a classifier by learning, from a set of preclassified documents, the characteristics of the categories. The advantages of this approach over the knowledge engineering approach (consisting in the manual definition of a classifier by domain experts) are a very good effectiveness, considerable savings in terms of expert manpower, and straightforward portability to different domains. This survey discusses the main approaches to text categorization that fall within the machine learning paradigm. We will discuss in detail issues pertaining to three different problems, namely document representation, classifier construction, and classifier evaluation.Comment: Accepted for publication on ACM Computing Survey

    Introducing the INSIGNIA project: environmental monitoring of pesticide use through honey bees

    INSIGNIA aims to design and test an innovative, non-invasive, scientifically proven citizen science environmental monitoring protocol for the detection of pesticides by honey bees. It is a 30-month pilot project initiated and financed by the EC (PP-1-1-2018; EC SANTE). The study is being carried out by a consortium of specialists in honey bees, apiculture, statistics, analytics, modelling, extension, social science and citizen science from twelve countries. Honey bee colonies are excellent bio-samplers of biological material such as nectar, pollen and plant pathogens, as well as non-biological material such as pesticides or airborne contamination. Honey bee colonies forage over a circle of 1 km radius, increasing to several km if required, depending on the availability and attractiveness of food. All material collected is accumulated in the hive.The honey bee colony can provide four main matrices for environmental monitoring: bees, honey, pollen and wax. Because of the non-destructive remit of the project, for pesticides, pollen is the focal matrix and used as trapped pollen and beebread in this study. Although beeswax can be used as a passive sampler for pesticides, this matrix is not being used in INSIGNIA because of its polarity dependent absorbance, which limits the required wide range of pesticides to be monitored. Alternatively, two innovative non-biological matrices are being tested: i) the “Beehold tube”, a tube lined with the generic absorbent polyethylene-glycol PEG, through which hive-entering bees are forced to pass, and ii) the “APIStrip” (Absorbing Pesticides In-hive Strips) with a specific pesticide absorbent which is hung between the bee combs.Beebread and pollen collected in pollen traps are being sampled every two weeks to be analysed for pesticide residues and to record foraging conditions. Trapped pollen provides snapshots of the foraging conditions and contaminants on a single day. During the active season, the majority of beebread is consumed within days, so beebread provides recent, random sampling results. The Beehold tube and the APIStrips are present throughout the 2-weeks sampling periods in the beehive, absorbing and accumulating the incoming contaminants. The four matrices i.e. trapped pollen, beebread, Beehold tubes and APIStrips will be analysed for the presence of pesticides. The botanical origin of trapped pollen, beebread and pollen in the Beehold tubes will also be determined with an innovative molecular technique. Data on pollen and pesticide presence will then be combined to obtain information on foraging conditions and pesticide use, together with evaluation of the CORINE database for land use and pesticide legislation to model the exposure risks to honey bees and wild bees. All monitoring steps from sampling through to analysis will be studied and rigorously tested in four countries in Year 1, and the best practices will then be ring-tested in nine countries in Year 2.     Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
