    Spectroscopic signatures of a bandwidth-controlled Mott transition at the surface of 1T-TaSe2_2

    High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) data show that a metal-insulator Mott transition occurs at the surface of the quasi-two dimensional compound TaSe2_2. The transition is driven by the narrowing of the Ta 5d5d band induced by a temperature-dependent modulation of the atomic positions. A dynamical mean-field theory calculation of the spectral function of the half-filled Hubbard model captures the main qualitative feature of the data, namely the rapid transfer of spectral weight from the observed quasiparticle peak at the Fermi surface to the Hubbard bands, as the correlation gap opens up.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; one modified figure, added referenc

    Itinerant Ferromagnetism in the Periodic Anderson Model

    We introduce a novel mechanism for itinerant ferromagnetism, based on a simple two-band model. The model includes an uncorrelated and dispersive band hybridized with a second band which is narrow and correlated. The simplest Hamiltonian containing these ingredients is the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM). Using quantum Monte Carlo and analytical methods, we show that the PAM and an extension of it contain the new mechanism and exhibit a non-saturated ferromagnetic ground state in the intermediate valence regime. We propose that the mechanism, which does not assume an intra atomic Hund's coupling, is present in both the iron group and in some f electron compounds like Ce(Rh_{1-x} Ru_x)_3 B_2, La_x Ce_{1-x} Rh_3 B_2 and the uranium monochalcogenides US, USe, and UTe

    Decapitation in Rats: Latency to Unconsciousness and the ‘Wave of Death’

    The question whether decapitation is a humane method of euthanasia in awake animals is being debated. To gather arguments in this debate, obsolete rats were decapitated while recording the EEG, both of awake rats and of anesthetized rats. Following decapitation a fast and global loss of power of the EEG was observed; the power in the 13–100 Hz frequency band, expressing cognitive activity, decreased according to an exponential decay function to half the initial value within 4 seconds. Whereas the pre-decapitation EEG of the anesthetized animals showed a burst suppression pattern quite different from the awake animals, the power in the postdecapitation EEG did not differ between the two groups. This might indicate that either the power of the EEG does not correlate well with consciousness or that consciousness is briefly regained in the anesthetized group after decapitation. Remarkably, after 50 seconds (awake group) or 80 seconds (anesthetized group) following decapitation, a high amplitude slow wave was observed. The EEG before this wave had more power than the signal after the wave. This wave might be due to a simultaneous massive loss of membrane potentials of the neurons. Still functioning ion channels, which keep the membrane potential intact before the wave, might explain the observed power difference. Two conclusions were drawn from this experiment. It is likely that consciousness vanishes within seconds after decapitation, implying that decapitation is a quick and not an inhumane method of euthanasia. It seems that the massive wave which can be recorded approximately one minute after decapitation reflects the ultimate border between life and death. This observation might have implications in the discussions on the appropriate time for organ donation

    Changing practice in dementia care in the community: developing and testing evidence-based interventions, from timely diagnosis to end of life (EVIDEM)

    Background Dementia has an enormous impact on the lives of individuals and families, and on health and social services, and this will increase as the population ages. The needs of people with dementia and their carers for information and support are inadequately addressed at all key points in the illness trajectory. Methods The Unit is working specifically on an evaluation of the impact of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and will develop practice guidance to enhance concordance with the Act. Phase One of the study has involved baseline interviews with practitioners across a wide range of services to establish knowledge and expectations of the Act, and to consider change processes when new policy and legislation are implemented. Findings Phase 1, involving baseline interviews with 115 practitioners, identified variable knowledge and understanding about the principles of the Act. Phase 2 is exploring everyday decision-making by people with memory problems and their carers

    Modeling the effect of age in T1-2 breast cancer using the SEER database

    BACKGROUND: Modeling the relationship between age and mortality for breast cancer patients may have important prognostic and therapeutic implications. METHODS: Data from 9 registries of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) of the United States were used. This study employed proportional hazards to model mortality in women with T1-2 breast cancers. The residuals of the model were used to examine the effect of age on mortality. This procedure was applied to node-negative (N0) and node-positive (N+) patients. All causes mortality and breast cancer specific mortality were evaluated. RESULTS: The relationship between age and mortality is biphasic. For both N0 and N+ patients among the T1-2 group, the analysis suggested two age components. One component is linear and corresponds to a natural increase of mortality with each year of age. The other component is quasi-quadratic and is centered around age 50. This component contributes to an increased risk of mortality as age increases beyond 50. It suggests a hormonally related process: the farther from menopause in either direction, the more prognosis is adversely influenced by the quasi-quadratic component. There is a complex relationship between hormone receptor status and other prognostic factors, like age. CONCLUSION: The present analysis confirms the findings of many epidemiological and clinical trials that the relationship between age and mortality is biphasic. Compared with older patients, young women experience an abnormally high risk of death. Among elderly patients, the risk of death from breast cancer does not decrease with increasing age. These facts are important in the discussion of options for adjuvant treatment with breast cancer patients

    Chemical warfare between leafcutter ant symbionts and a co-evolved pathogen

    Acromyrmex leafcutter ants form a mutually beneficial symbiosis with the fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus and with Pseudonocardia bacteria. Both are vertically transmitted and actively maintained by the ants. The fungus garden is manured with freshly cut leaves and provides the sole food for the ant larvae, while Pseudonocardia cultures are reared on the ant-cuticle and make antifungal metabolites to help protect the cultivar against disease. If left unchecked, specialized parasitic Escovopsis fungi can overrun the fungus-garden and lead to colony collapse. We report that Escovopsis upregulates the production of two specialized metabolites when it infects the cultivar. These compounds inhibit Pseudonocardia and one, shearinine D, also reduces worker behavioral defences and is ultimately lethal when it accumulates in ant tissues. Our results are consistent with an active evolutionary arms race between Pseudonocardia and Escovopsis, which modifies both bacterial and behavioral defences such that colony collapse is unavoidable once Escovopsis infections escalate

    The distribution of proenkephalin-derived peptides in the central nervous system of turtles

    The present study was carried out to examine if peptides similar to the various opioid peptide products of mammalian proenkephalin are present in the turtle central nervous system and to determine their distribution. Antisera against several enkephalin peptides were used: (1) leucine-enkephalin (LENK), (2) methionine-enkephalin (MENK), (3) methionine-enkephalin-arg 6 -phe 7 (MERF), (4) methionine-enkephalin-arg 6 -gly 7 -leu 8 (MERGL), (5) Peptide E (PEPE), and (6) BAM22P. Their specificity and cross-reactivity were carefully examined. The results indicated that LENK, MENK, and MERF (or highly similar peptides) are present in the turtle central nervous system, and that a peptide showing immunological similarity to BAM22P and PEPE also appeared to be present. In contrast, MERGL did not appear to be present. The distributions of the immunoreactive labeling for LENK, MENK, MERF, BAM22P, and PEPE were indistinguishable, and double-label studies showed that LENK, MERF, and BAM22P were colocalized within individual neurons and fibers. Although all of the above substances were observed in the same cell groups, there was some regional variation, in terms of which enkephalin peptide appeared to be most abundant. The distributions of these enkephalin peptides were very similar to those previously described in mammals and birds. Enkephalin was more abundant in the basal ganglia than in overlying telencephalic regions. Within the basal ganglia, enkephalin was present in striatal neurons and fibers and in pallidal fibers, thereby suggesting the existence of an enkephalinergic striatopallidal projection. Sensory relay nuclei of the thalamus were generally poor in enkephalinergic fibers, whereas the hypothalamus was rich in enkephalinergic neurons and fibers. Enkephalinergic neurons and fibers were present in the midbrain central gray. As is true of neurons of the nucleus spiriformis lateralis of the avian pretectum, the neurons of the homologous cell group in turtles, the dorsal nucleus of the posterior commissure of the pretectum, were found to contain enkephalin and have an enkephalinergic projection to the deep layers of the ipsilateral tectum. Enkephalinergic neurons and fibers were also abundant in the entry zones of the trigeminal nerve and dorsal root fibers of the spinal cord. The present results indicate that: (1) consistent with previously published biochemical studies (Lindberg and White, '86), proenkephalin in reptiles is similar in structure to that of mammals and, with the exception of MERGL, gives rise to similar or identical enkephalin peptides, and (2) the enkephalin peptides are found in many of the same systems of reptilian brain as mammalian and avian brain, and, therefore, may play a role in similar functions (e.g., basal ganglia motor functions) as in mammals and birds.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/50034/1/902590106_ftp.pd

    Dementia Caregiver Burden: A Research Update and Critical Analysis

    Purpose of Review: This article provides an updated review of the determinants of caregiver burden and depression, with a focus on care demands and especially the differential effects of various neuropsychiatric symptoms or symptom clusters. Moreover, studies on caregivers for frontotemporal and Lewy body dementias were referred to in order to identify differences and similarities with the mainstream literature based largely on Alzheimer caregivers. Recent Findings: As a group, neuropsychiatric symptoms are most predictive of caregiver burden and depression regardless of dementia diagnosis, but the effects appear to be driven primarily by disruptive behaviors (e.g., agitation, aggression, disinhibition), followed by delusions and mood disturbance. Disruptive behaviors are more disturbing partly because of the adverse impact on the emotional connection between the caregiver and the care-recipient and partly because they exacerbate difficulties in other domains (e.g., caring for activities of daily living). In behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, not only are these disruptive behaviors more prominent but they are also more disturbing due to the care-recipient’s insensitivity to others’ feelings. In Lewy body dementia, visual hallucinations also appear to be distressing. Summary: The disturbing nature of disruptive behaviors cuts across dementia conditions, but the roles played by symptoms that are unique or particularly serious in a certain condition need to be explored further

    Prerequisites for effective adenovirus mediated gene therapy of colorectal liver metastases in the rat using an intracellular neutralizing antibody fragment to p21-Ras

    Ras mutations are present in 40–50% of colorectal cancers. Inactivating this oncogene may therefore reduce proliferation capacity. In order to target ras we studied the transduction efficacy and anti tumour activity of an adenoviral vector expressing an intracellular, neutralizing single chain antibody to p21-ras (Y28). In in vitro studies transfection levels of the K-ras mutated rat colon carcinoma cell line CC531 were studied using the LacZ marker gene. In our in vivo liver metastases model different routes of administration were evaluated to determine which regimen resulted in the best transfection levels and tumour responses: intravenous injection, intratumoural injection, isolated liver perfusion, or hepatic artery infusion. CC531 cells are readily transfected in vitro, resulting in significant inhibition of tumour cell proliferation by the Y28 construct. Intravenous injection did not result in any measurable transfection. Intratumoural injection resulted only in the transfection of tumour cells along the needle track. IHP as well as single HAI achieved low transfection levels of tumour tissue. Expression of Y28 was demonstrated in tumours after IT injection, HAI and IHP. Whereas, repeated HAI's clearly achieved expression in and around tumour associated vessels. Only five times repeated HAI's with Y28 resulted in a tumour response: in all animals tumour growth was inhibited, and in three rats out of eight a complete regression of the liver tumours was observed
