The transmitter also separates signals by sync pulses. The pulses amplitude modulate a radio frequency carrier which is received at a receiver unit. There the sync pulses are detected by a demultiplexer which routes the pulses from each different source to a separate output channel where the pulses are used to reconstruct the signals from the particular source

    On New Procedures of Estimation for Binary Data

    In developmental toxity studies, current methods divide animals equally among all treatment groups. New procedures are introduced for estimating correlated binary data. Instead of allocating an equal number to each treatment, observe clusters one at a time until a desired numer of clusters have a chosen number of responses or more. Dose levels, or treatments, known to have many responses would not need as many animals. This procedure could save animals but would not sacrifice any information. Focusing on exchangeable binary data, a new procedure for estimating the probability of a response is investigated. This alternate design is analyzed through a simulation study and applied to a clinical data set. Comparisons are made between past estimators and the new estimator given

    Crossflow vorticity sensor

    A crossflow vorticity sensor for the detection of crossflow vorticity characteristics is described. The sensor is comprised of crossflow sensors which are noninvasively adhered to a swept wing laminar surface either singularly, in multi-element strips, in polar patterns, or in orthogonal patterns. These crossflow sensors are comprised of hot-film sensor elements which operate as a constant temperature anemometer circuit to detect heat transfer rate changes. Accordingly, crossflow vorticity characteristics are determined via cross-correlation. In addition, the crossflow sensors have a thickness which does not exceed a maximum value h in order to avoid contamination of downstream crossflow sensors

    An analysis of the influences on household-level adaptations to environmental hazards

    Utilizing a randomized phone survey of coastal Louisiana residents, this study will focus on identifying which influences from a resident’s exposure, socio-economic vulnerability and adaptive capacity are the best indicators of an individual’s resilience. Two binary logistic regression models were developed to test the associations of resident response to: 1) acute hazards via household emergency plan adoption and 2) chronic hazards represented by behavior modification in response to daily air quality reporting where adoption of these two risk-reducing behaviors are viewed as increased individual resilience. Bivariate correlation analysis found that a north – south grouping of coastal Louisiana was significantly correlated with 26 of the survey predictor variables. The two binary logistic regression model results include: as an individual’s current level of environmental hazard knowledge increases by 1-increment they are 53% more likely to engage in the risk-reducing behavior, adoption of an emergency plan and almost 5 in 10 residents of the southern region reported altering their behavior on poor air quality days. This self-reported mitigation effort is associated with an increase in their personal level of concern for overall environmental pollution. Overall the results indicate when residents are provided with relevant environmental hazard information and, more importantly, when residents understand and have confidence in the hazard information, they are more likely to take anticipatory and pre-emptive measures to reduce their risk. While this study found less optimal risk-reducing adoption rates, the finding suggests immediate opportunities for government agencies and public-interest organizations to increase public education efforts to target audiences who are willing and receptive to increased environmental hazard information. Future research improvements should include increased survey questions, new survey administering methods, broadening the geographical scope of the research project, and, thus, increasing the sampling population size

    Among the unique contributions made by Benjamin Britten to music literature are his Lehstuecke, or teaching plays, The Little Sweep and Noye\u27s Fludde. Written in a style that has wide appeal for people of all ages, these opera-like forms have as their aim the fostering of enjoyment of music through participation and involvement in the performance. This report deals with Noye\u27s Fludde, its place in music history and in the music of Britten. Also discussed are the formal organization of the music and an analysis of the sections. The analysis includes the elements of text, melody, harmony, structure, orchestration, and coloristic devices employed by Britten. It is the hope of the candidate that his brief summary and analysis will show the importance of Noye\u27s Fludde in music history and choral music of the twentieth century

    Design of multivariable feedback control systems via spectral assignment using reduced-order models and reduced-order observers

    The feasibility of using reduced order models and reduced order observers with eigenvalue/eigenvector assignment procedures is investigated. A review of spectral assignment synthesis procedures is presented. Then, a reduced order model which retains essential system characteristics is formulated. A constant state feedback matrix which assigns desired closed loop eigenvalues and approximates specified closed loop eigenvectors is calculated for the reduced order model. It is shown that the eigenvalue and eigenvector assignments made in the reduced order system are retained when the feedback matrix is implemented about the full order system. In addition, those modes and associated eigenvectors which are not included in the reduced order model remain unchanged in the closed loop full order system. The full state feedback design is then implemented by using a reduced order observer. It is shown that the eigenvalue and eigenvector assignments of the closed loop full order system rmain unchanged when a reduced order observer is used. The design procedure is illustrated by an actual design problem
