    Measuring the Impact of Information Technology on Value and Productivity using a Process-Based Approach: The case for RFID Technologies

    There has been a lot of research addressing the relationship between Information Technology (IT) investments and productivity. Most of the work has been based on firm-level metrics such as total IT investment. We present what we believe is one of the first attempts to create a systematic methodology to assess the impact of IT in business process performance metrics. Our approach builds on the MIT Process Handbook as a basis to both guide the analysis and capture the resulting knowledge for future use. We will present preliminary results on how to use such methodology to analyze the impact of a given IT technology, namely RFID (radio frequency identification devices), in performance metrics of a consumer packaged goods company. We are interested in looking at how IT may impact performance metrics such as productivity, cost and value. We believe our methodology can help CPG companies prioritize their investments. We show results on how the specialization features of the MIT Process Handbook can incorporate performance metrics to help assess such investments in RFID

    The 'others' amongst 'them' – selection categories in European resettlement and humanitarian admission programmes

    The chapter looks at categorisations as a form of ‘othering’ in the context of European refugee resettlement. Selection categories in resettlement provide insights into states’ preferences, when given the possibility to effectively select refugees before they present themselves at the border. As such, categorisations in such programmes are ways of othering within the group of ‘others’, excluding but also including according to three logics: humanitarian, security and assimilability. The chapter provides a panoramic view of official selection categories of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), European Member States, and the European Union (EU). The analysis shows that, while resettlement is framed as a humanitarian policy for the ‘most vulnerable’, some European states’ programmes and recent EU propositions indicate that besides a humanitarian logic, security and assimilability logics of ‘othering’ also draw the boundaries of access to this privileged form of refugee protection

    Are Family Agencies able to provide casework treatment in an authoritative court setting? The author shall attempt to reveal the contributions of Catholic Charities at Manhattan’s Home Term Court. The dissertation shall trace the developmental history of the Home Term Court, and the social casework services provided by Catholic Charities as an adjunct of Home Term. The idea for this experimental domestic relations court grew out of the appalling upsurge of disrupted family cases that began crowding regular court calendars during World War II. Punishing the offenders was no solution; the same ones appeared on the calendars again and again. To try to help the ignorant, the maladjusted and those prone to hard luck in general, Magistrate Anna M. Kross was assigned to set up the Home Term Court
