    Polarization of high-energy electrons traversing a laser beam

    When polarized electrons traverse a region where the laser light is focused their polarization varies even if their energy and direction of motion are not changed. This effect is due to interference of the incoming electron wave and an electron wave scattered at zero angle. Equations are obtained which determine the variation of the electron density matrix, and their solutions are given. The change in the electron polarization depends not only on the Compton cross section but on the real part of the forward Compton amplitude as well. It should be taken into account, for example, in simulations of the eγe \to \gamma conversion for future γγ\gamma \gamma colliders.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX , 2 postscript figures include

    The elastic light-light scattering below the threshold of the e+ee^+e^- pair production leads to a variation in polarization of hard γ\gamma-quanta traversing without loss a region where the laser light is focused. Equations are obtained which determine the variation of Stokes parameters of γ\gamma-quanta in this case, and their solutions are given. It is pointed out that this effect can be observed in the experiment E-144 at SLAC.     Lepton flavor violating signals of a little Higgs model at the high energy linear e+ee^{+}e^{-} colliders

    Littlest Higgs (LH)(LH) model predicts the existence of the doubly charged scalars Φ±±\Phi^{\pm\pm}, which generally have large flavor changing couplings to leptons. We calculate the contributions of Φ±±\Phi^{\pm\pm} to the lepton flavor violating (LFV)(LFV) processes liljγl_{i}\to l_{j}\gamma and liljlklkl_{i}\to l_{j}l_{k}l_{k}, and compare our numerical results with the current experimental upper limits on these processes. We find that some of these processes can give severe constraints on the coupling constant YijY_{ij} and the mass parameter MΦM_{\Phi}. Taking into account the constraints on these free parameters, we further discuss the possible lepton flavor violating signals of Φ±±\Phi^{\pm\pm} at the high energy linear e+ee^{+}e^{-} collider (ILC)(ILC) experiments. Our numerical results show that the possible signals of Φ±±\Phi^{\pm\pm} might be detected via the subprocesses e±e±l±l±e^{\pm}e^{\pm}\to l^{\pm}l^{\pm} in the future ILCILC experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures.     The Physics of Cluster Mergers

    Clusters of galaxies generally form by the gravitational merger of smaller clusters and groups. Major cluster mergers are the most energetic events in the Universe since the Big Bang. Some of the basic physical properties of mergers will be discussed, with an emphasis on simple analytic arguments rather than numerical simulations. Semi-analytic estimates of merger rates are reviewed, and a simple treatment of the kinematics of binary mergers is given. Mergers drive shocks into the intracluster medium, and these shocks heat the gas and should also accelerate nonthermal relativistic particles. X-ray observations of shocks can be used to determine the geometry and kinematics of the merger. Many clusters contain cooling flow cores; the hydrodynamical interactions of these cores with the hotter, less dense gas during mergers are discussed. As a result of particle acceleration in shocks, clusters of galaxies should contain very large populations of relativistic electrons and ions. Electrons with Lorentz factors gamma~300 (energies E = gamma m_e c^2 ~ 150 MeV) are expected to be particularly common. Observations and models for the radio, extreme ultraviolet, hard X-ray, and gamma-ray emission from nonthermal particles accelerated in these mergers are described.Comment: 38 pages with 9 embedded Postscript figures.     Light charged Higgs at the beginning of the LHC era

    The terascale will be explored with the start of the LHC. One of the most fundamental questions which we expect to be answered is the root of electroweak symmetry breaking and whether the Higgs mechanism is realized in nature or not. In this context we pose the question if existing experimental data still allow for a light non-minimal Higgs sector. We tackle this question first in the context of the two Higgs doublet model and then we concentrate in two supersymmetric models, the constrained MSSM and the MSSM with non-universal Higgs masses. In both supersymmetric scearios, light pseudoscalar and light charged-Higgs bosons are still viable provided tan beta is large. In this regime, we emphasize the importance of the constraints provided by the decay B to tau nu mediated by the charged-Higgs at tree-level.     Single-photon events in e^+ e^- collisions

    We provide a detailed investigation of single-photon production processes in e+ee^+e^- collisions with missing momenta carried by neutrinos or neutralinos. The transition amplitudes for both processes can be organized into a generic simplified, factorized form; each neutral V±\pmA vector current of missing energy carriers is factorized out and all the characteristics of the reaction is solely included in the electron vector current. Firstly, we apply the generic form to give a unified description of a single-photon production with a Dirac-type or Majorana-type neutrino-pair and to confirm their identical characteristics as suggested by the so-called Practical Dirac-Majorana Confusion Theorem. Secondly, we show that the generic amplitude form is maintained with the anomalous P- and C-invariant WWγ\gamma couplings in the neutrino-associated process and it enables us to easily understand large contributions of the anomalous WWγ\gamma couplings at higher energies and, in particular, at the points away from the Z-resonance peak. Finally, the neutralino-associated process, which receives modifications in both the left-handed and right-handed electron currents due to the exchanges of the left-handed and right-handed selectrons, can be differentiated from the neutrino-associated ones through the left-right asymmetries and/or the circular polarization of the outgoing photon.Comment: 20 pages, REVTeX, epsfig.sty, 7 figures (7 eps files

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime.
