    Immigrants at Retirement: Stay/Return or 'Va-et-Vient'

    where labour considerations no longer matter, the location decisions are expected to depend not only on a comparison of standard-of-living between the origin and host countries, but should also be affected by the strength of family relationships. Assuming that migrants derive some satisfaction from contact and visits with other family members, we suggest that migrants may choose a third type of migration move beyond the standard stay/return decision called the 'va-et-vient' where individuals choose to share their time across the host and the origin country. In the empirical analysis, we test the determinants of the location intention at retirement using a recent data set on migrants currently living in France. We found that the migrant's choice is significantly related to the location of other family members and that those determinants vary with respect to the different preferred choices.Return migration, retirement, family interactions

    Do Parents Help More their Less Well-Off Children? Evidence from a Sample of Migrants to France

    Through an investigation of parental motives, this paper examines how parents decide on the allocation of their resources within the family when there are several offspring. From a theoretical viewpoint, inter vivos transfers may be explained either by altruism or by an exchange motive. Though unequal sharing is expected under both hypotheses, under altruism parents should direct their assistance to less well off children. Analogously, under an exchange motive we expect support to be channeled to children who live nearby their parents. We assess the relevance of the two transfer motives using the PRI survey, conducted in 2003, on a sample of immigrants living in France. Unequal sharing is frequently observed, and children are more likely to receive financial transfers when they are in poor circumstance, but not necessarily when living in proximity to parents. This is the case even after controlling for unobserved heterogeneity with fixed effects models.     IS integration and business value: an environment contingency approach

    Does Enterprise Systems (ES) integration pay off? Research on IS integration has been an enduring quest for the IS discipline. Is it really worth it? Research has often responded to the question positively. It is useful to explore which conditions ES is likely to yield value. Research has also shown that less imitable factors such as the quality of IT management and the nature of the environment which the firm operates likely play a key role in potential value derived from ES. Furthermore, more research has suggested that IT investment has differential impacts in terms of cost versus revenue. In this paper we differentiate both integration and dynamism into external and internal types looking at the interactions. Specifically, this paper provides evidence that: 1) firms with high internal and high external integration have lower sales and 2) high internal dynamism positively moderates the impact of external integration upon earnings

    Is There A Glass Ceiling in Morocco? Evidence from Matched Worker-Firm Data

    According to the glass ceiling hypothesis evidenced in developed countries, there exist larger gender pay gaps at the upper tail of the wage distribution. In this paper, we investigate the relevance of a glass ceiling effect in Morocco using a matched worker-firm data set of more than 8000 employees and 850 employers. We estimate linear and quantile earnings regressions which account for firm heterogeneity and perform a quantile decomposition. We also focus on the within-firm gender earnings gap using information on the firms’ characteristics. Our results show that the gender earnings gap is higher at the top of the distribution than at the bottom in Morocco. The gender gap widens in the upper tail of the earnings distribution when controlling for firm specific components.     Economic growth and household production in France (1985-2010)

    Cet article propose une réévaluation de la croissance économique en France entre 1985 et 2010, en intégrant la production domestique aux indicateurs de richesse du Produit Intérieur Brut et des revenus du travail. Au cours de la période, la croissance du PIB est surestimée de 0,35 point de pourcentage. Une décomposition temporelle révèle que la croissance est clairement surestimée au cours de la période 1985-2000, tandis qu’elle est plutôt sous-estimée au cours de la période 2000-2010. Le ralentissement de la croissance du PIB après les années 2000 est nettement moins évident lorsque l’on utilise l’indicateur élargi à la production domestique dont le taux de croissance passe de 1,6% à 1,5%

    As the knowledge base and importance of mitochondrial physiology to evolution, health and disease expands, the necessity for harmonizing the terminology concerning mitochondrial respiratory states and rates has become increasingly apparent. The chemiosmotic theory establishes the mechanism of energy transformation and coupling in oxidative phosphorylation. The unifying concept of the protonmotive force provides the framework for developing a consistent theoretical foundation of mitochondrial physiology and bioenergetics. We follow the latest SI guidelines and those of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) on terminology in physical chemistry, extended by considerations of open systems and thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The concept-driven constructive terminology incorporates the meaning of each quantity and aligns concepts and symbols with the nomenclature of classical bioenergetics. We endeavour to provide a balanced view of mitochondrial respiratory control and a critical discussion on reporting data of mitochondrial respiration in terms of metabolic flows and fluxes. Uniform standards for evaluation of respiratory states and rates will ultimately contribute to reproducibility between laboratories and thus support the development of data repositories of mitochondrial respiratory function in species, tissues, and cells. Clarity of concept and consistency of nomenclature facilitate effective transdisciplinary communication, education, and ultimately further discovery

    Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
