    Microscopic models of hardness

    Recent developments in the field of microscopic hardness models have been reviewed. In these models, the theoretical hardness is described as a function of the bond density and bond strength. The bond strength may be characterized by energy gap, reference potential, electron-holding energy or Gibbs free energy, and different expressions of bond strength may lead to different hardness models. In particular, the hardness model based on the chemical bond theory of complex crystals has been introduced in detail. The examples of the hardness calculations of typical crystals, such as spinel Si₃N₄, stishovite SiO₂, B₁₂O₂, ReB₂, OsB₂, RuB₂, and PtN₂, are presented. These microscopic models of hardness would play an important role in search for new hard materials.Зроблено огляд останніх розробок в області мікромоделей твердості. У цих моделях теоретичну твердість описано як функцію щільності та міцності зв’язку. Міцність зв’язку може бути охарактеризована шириною забороненої зони, опорним потенціалом, енергією утримання електрона або вільною енергією Гіббса. Тому різні вирази міцності зв’язку приведуть до різних моделей міцності. Зокрема, докладно описано модель твердості, основану на теорії хімічного зв’язку складних кристалів. Наведено приклади розрахунків твердості типових кристалів, таких як шпінель Si₃N₄, стишовіт SiO₂, B₁₂O₂, ReB₂, OsB₂, RuB₂ и PtN₂. Ці мікромоделі твердості будуть грати важливу роль в пошуку нових твердих матеріалів.Дан обзор последних разработок в области микромоделей твердости. В этих моделях теоретическая твердость описана как функция плотности и прочности связи. Прочность связи может быть охарактеризована шириной запрещенной зоны, опорным потенциалом, энергией удержания электрона или свободной энергией Гиббса. Поэтому различные выражения прочности связи приведут к различным моделям твердости. В частности, подробно описана модель твердости, основанная на теории химической связи сложных кристаллов.     Extracting Br(omega->pi^+ pi^-) from the Time-like Pion Form-factor

    We extract the G-parity-violating branching ratio Br(omega->pi^+ pi^-) from the effective rho-omega mixing matrix element Pi_{rho omega}(s), determined from e^+e^- -> pi^+ pi^- data. The omega->pi^+ pi^- partial width can be determined either from the time-like pion form factor or through the constraint that the mixed physical propagator D_{rho omega}^{mu nu}(s) possesses no poles. The two procedures are inequivalent in practice, and we show why the first is preferred, to find finally Br(omega->pi^+ pi^-) = 1.9 +/- 0.3%.Comment: 12 pages (published version

    Sharp two-sided heat kernel estimates for critical Schr\"odinger operators on bounded domains

    On a smooth bounded domain \Omega \subset R^N we consider the Schr\"odinger operators -\Delta -V, with V being either the critical borderline potential V(x)=(N-2)^2/4 |x|^{-2} or V(x)=(1/4) dist (x,\partial\Omega)^{-2}, under Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this work we obtain sharp two-sided estimates on the corresponding heat kernels. To this end we transform the Scr\"odinger operators into suitable degenerate operators, for which we prove a new parabolic Harnack inequality up to the boundary. To derive the Harnack inequality we have established a serier of new inequalities such as improved Hardy, logarithmic Hardy Sobolev, Hardy-Moser and weighted Poincar\'e. As a byproduct of our technique we are able to answer positively to a conjecture of E.B.Davies.Comment: 40 page

    Charm multiplicity and the branching ratios of inclusive charmless b quark decays in the general two-Higgs-doublet models

    In the framework of general two-Higgs-doublet models, we calculate the branching ratios of various inclusive charmless b decays by using the low energy effective Hamiltonian including next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and examine the current status and the new physics effects on the determination of the charm multiplicity ncn_c and semileptonic branching ratio BSLB_{SL}. Within the considered parameter space, the enhancement to the ratio BR(bsg)BR(b \to s g) due to the charged-Higgs penguins can be as large as a factor of 8 (3) in the model III (II), while the ratio BR(bnocharm)BR(b \to no charm) can be increased from the standard model prediction of 2.49% to 4.91% (2.99%) in the model III (II). Consequently, the value of BSLB_{SL} and ncn_c can be decreased simultaneously in the model III. The central value of BSLB_{SL} will be lowered slightly by about 0.003, but the ratio ncn_c can be reduced significantly from the theoretical prediction of nc=1.28±0.05n_c= 1.28 \pm 0.05 in the SM to nc=1.23±0.05n_c= 1.23 \pm 0.05, 1.18±0.051.18 \pm 0.05 for mH+=200,100m_{H^+}=200, 100 GeV, respectively. We find that the predicted ncn_c and the measured ncn_c now agree within roughly one standard deviation after taking into account the effects of gluonic charged Higgs penguins in the model III with a relatively light charged Higgs boson.Comment: 25 pages, Latex file, axodraw.sty, 6 figures.     Chronic tooth pulp inflammation induces persistent expression of phosphorylated ERK (pERK) and phosphorylated p38 (pp38) in trigeminal subnucleus caudalis

    Background: Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase are transiently phosphorylated (activated) in the spinal cord and trigeminal nucleus by acute noxious stimuli. Acute stimulation of dental pulp induces short-lived ERK activation in trigeminal subnucleus caudalis (Vc), and p38 inhibition attenuates short-term sensitization in Vc induced by acute pulpal stimulation. We have developed a model to study central changes following chronic inflammation of dental pulp that induces long-term sensitization. Here, we examine the effects of chronic inflammation and acute stimulation on the expression of phosphorylated ERK (pERK), phosphorylated p38 (pp38) and Fos in Vc. Results: Chronic inflammation alone induced bilateral expression of pERK and pp38 in Vc, but did not induce Fos expression. Stimulation of both non-inflamed and inflamed pulps significantly increased pERK and pp38 bilaterally; expression was greatest in inflamed, stimulated animals, and was similar following 10-min and 60-min stimulation. Stimulation for 60 min, but not 10 min, induced Fos in ipsilateral Vc; Fos expression was significantly greater in inflamed, stimulated animals. pERK was present in both neurons and astrocytes; pp38 was present in neurons and other non-neuronal, non-astrocytic cell types. Conclusions: This study provides the first demonstration that chronic inflammation of tooth pulp induces persistent bilateral activation of ERK and p38 within Vc, and that this activation is further increased by acute stimulation. This altered activity in intracellular signaling is likely to be linked to the sensitization that is seen in our animal model and in patients with pulpitis. Our data indicate that pERK and pp38 are more accurate markers of central change than Fos expression. In our model, localization of pERK and pp38 within specific cell types differs from that seen following acute stimulation. This may indicate specific roles for different cell types in the induction and maintenance of pulpitic and other types of pain

    Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio
