    Measurement of the integrated luminosity of the Phase 2 data of the Belle II experiment

    From April to July 2018, a data sample at the peak energy of the γ(4S) resonance was collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. This is the first data sample of the Belle II experiment. Using Bhabha and digamma events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be (496.3 ± 0.3 ± 3.0) pb-1, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This work provides a basis for future luminosity measurements at Belle II

    Search for pair-produced resonances decaying to quark pairs in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

    A general search for the pair production of resonances, each decaying to two quarks, is reported. The search is conducted separately for heavier resonances (masses above 400 GeV), where each of the four final-state quarks generates a hadronic jet resulting in a four-jet signature, and for lighter resonances (masses between 80 and 400 GeV), where the pair of quarks from each resonance is collimated and reconstructed as a single jet resulting in a two-jet signature. In addition, a b-tagged selection is applied to target resonances with a bottom quark in the final state. The analysis uses data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1), from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The mass spectra are analyzed for the presence of new resonances, and are found to be consistent with standard model expectations. The results are interpreted in the framework of R-parity-violating supersymmetry assuming the pair production of scalar top quarks decaying via the hadronic coupling lambda ''(312) or lambda ''(323) and upper limits on the cross section as a function of the top squark mass are set. These results probe a wider range of masses than previously explored at the LHC, and extend the top squark mass limits in the (t) over tilde -> qq' scenario.Peer reviewe

    Infected pancreatic necrosis: outcomes and clinical predictors of mortality. A post hoc analysis of the MANCTRA-1 international study

    : The identification of high-risk patients in the early stages of infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is critical, because it could help the clinicians to adopt more effective management strategies. We conducted a post hoc analysis of the MANCTRA-1 international study to assess the association between clinical risk factors and mortality among adult patients with IPN. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify prognostic factors of mortality. We identified 247 consecutive patients with IPN hospitalised between January 2019 and December 2020. History of uncontrolled arterial hypertension (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.135-15.882; aOR 4.245), qSOFA (p = 0.005; 95% CI 1.359-5.879; aOR 2.828), renal failure (p = 0.022; 95% CI 1.138-5.442; aOR 2.489), and haemodynamic failure (p = 0.018; 95% CI 1.184-5.978; aOR 2.661), were identified as independent predictors of mortality in IPN patients. Cholangitis (p = 0.003; 95% CI 1.598-9.930; aOR 3.983), abdominal compartment syndrome (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.090-6.967; aOR 2.735), and gastrointestinal/intra-abdominal bleeding (p = 0.009; 95% CI 1.286-5.712; aOR 2.710) were independently associated with the risk of mortality. Upfront open surgical necrosectomy was strongly associated with the risk of mortality (p < 0.001; 95% CI 1.912-7.442; aOR 3.772), whereas endoscopic drainage of pancreatic necrosis (p = 0.018; 95% CI 0.138-0.834; aOR 0.339) and enteral nutrition (p = 0.003; 95% CI 0.143-0.716; aOR 0.320) were found as protective factors. Organ failure, acute cholangitis, and upfront open surgical necrosectomy were the most significant predictors of mortality. Our study confirmed that, even in a subgroup of particularly ill patients such as those with IPN, upfront open surgery should be avoided as much as possible.     Family first: Evidence of consistency and variation in the value of family versus personal happiness across 49 different cultures

    People care about their own well-being, but also about the well-being of their families. It is currently however unknown how much people tend to value their own and their family’s well-being. A recent study documented that people value family happiness over personal happiness across four cultures. In this study, we sought to replicate this finding across a larger sample size (N = 12,819) and a greater number of countries (N = 49), We found that the strength of the idealization of family over personal happiness preference was small (average Cohen’s ds = .20 with country levels varying from -.02 to almost .48), but ubiquitous, i.e., direction presented in 98% of the studied countries, 73-75% with statistical significance and .40 and .30). Importantly, we did not find strong support for traditional theories in cross-cultural psychology that associate collectivism with greater prioritization of the family versus the individual; country level individualism-collectivism was not associated with variation in the idealization of family versus individual happiness. Our findings indicate that no matter how much various populists abuse the argument of “protecting family life” to disrupt emancipation, family happiness seems to be a pan-culturally phenomenon. Family well-being is a key ingredient of social fabric across the world, and should be acknowledged by psychology and well-being researchers, and by progressive movements too

    Happiness Maximization Is a WEIRD Way of Living

    Psychological science tends to treat subjective wellbeing and happiness synonymously. We start from the assumption that subjective wellbeing is more than being happy to ask the fundamental question: what is the ideal level of happiness? From a cross-cultural perspective, we propose that the idealization of attaining maximum levels of happiness may be especially characteristic of WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrial, Rich, Democratic) societies, but less so for others. Searching for an explanation for why “happiness maximization” might have emerged in these societies, we turn to studies linking cultures to their eco-environmental habitat. We discuss the premise that WEIRD cultures emerged in an exceptionally benign ecological habitat, i.e., compared to other regions, they faced relatively light existential pressures. We review the influence of the Gulfstream on the North-Western European climate as a source of these comparatively benign geographical conditions. We propose that the ecological conditions in which WEIRD societies emerged afforded them a basis to endorse happiness as a value and to idealise attaining its maximum level. To provide a nomological network for “happiness maximization”, we also studied its several potential side-effects: alcohol and drug consumption and abuse, and the prevalence of mania. To evaluate our hypothesis, we re-analyse data from two large-scale studies on ideal levels of personal life satisfaction—the most common operationalization of happiness in psychology—involving respondents from 61 countries. We conclude that societies whose members seek to maximize happiness tend to be characterized as a WEIRD, and generalizing this across societies can prove problematic if adopted at the ideological and policy level

    Puzzling Out the Structure of Novofumigatamide: Total Synthesis of Constitutional Isomers. Part II

    The total synthesis of several constitutional isomers showing a different connectivity of the macrolactam ring with the hexahydropyrrolo[2,3-b]indole core, as well as those arising from the positional exchange of the valine and the anthranilate units of the structure originally proposed for (−)-novofumigatamide, has been carried out. The constitutional isomers with 12-membered ring macrolactam connected with the pyrroloindoline framework through the indole nitrogen, and the acetyl group at the pyrrole nitrogen, of endo relative configuration, were prepared through the condensation between the tryptophan and valine edges derived from l- or d-tryptophan and l-valine amino acids. The corresponding exo products are highly unstable structures difficult to isolate and characterize. A second group of isomeric structures synthesized considered the positional exchange between the valine and the anthranilate residues within the macrolactam ring in the originally proposed macrocyclic structure. Comparison of the spectroscopic data allowed us to discard these alternative structures for the natural product

    Calculation of the Solubility Parameter by COSMO-RS Methods and Its Influence on Asphaltene–Ionic Liquid Interactions

    A study was made to determine the solubility behavior of 17 ionic liquids (ILs) with asphaltenes and a quantum-chemical density functional theory approximation using a def-TVZP basis set and the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof functional. The conductor-like model from COSMO-RS was used within the real solvent approximation to determine the density, molar volume, viscosity, and heat capacity with a statistical thermodynamic treatment of the interacting surface charges of the individual molecules. The solubility parameter of ILs and asphaltenes was determined using the relationship of the density and solubility parameters proposed by Panuganti et al. (<i>Ind. Eng. Chem. Res.</i> <b>2013</b>, <i>52</i>, 8009–8020). The results of the thermodynamic and solubility parameters were compared with the experimental data, and a close agreement was verified. The relative solubility of the asphaltenes with respect to ILs was determined using the ÎŽ values and Hansen’s method, i.e., spheres approximation. The structure and size of the cation (including the cationic ring head and the alkyl chain length) of ILs have an influence on their ability for dispersing asphaltenes according to the molecular interactions that govern the miscibility behavior of ILs and asphaltenes, i.e., van der Waals, π–π, cation−π, and hydrophobic interactions
