    IMPACT OF BIPOLAR DISORDER AND OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER COMORBIDITY ON NEUROCOGNITIVE PROFILE: A MINI-REVIEW

    The comorbidity of bipolar disorder (BD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is widely known. The overall rate of association between BD and OCD is very high and varies, depending on the authors, from 11% to 18%, with peaks of 21% in primarily bipolar patients. Vice versa, about 60% of patients with OCD have a second psychiatric diagnosis, which in 23% of cases turns out to be BD. The differences between the BD patients with and without OCD were so numerous and important (e.g., different onset of mood episodes, history of suicide attempts, seasonality, rapid cycling and impulsivity) that the comorbidity between BD and OCD may represent a distinct form of BD, similar to cyclothymic BD for psychopathological features. However, the comorbidity does not seem to have any impact on cognitive performance, such as there is no specific difference between patients who first develop BD and then OCD or vice versa. Anyway, the detection of the neurocognitive profile of these patients at the time of the first clinical evaluation could have clinical implications also in the therapeutic and rehabilitative management of this type of patient. Indeed, it would be desirable to develop a new model of rehabilitation that is less differentiated for both BD and OCD or for their comorbidity, also to make cognitive rehabilitation faster and less expensive.     The use of neural networks to probe the structure of the nearby universe

    In the framework of the European VO-Tech project, we are implementing new machine learning methods specifically tailored to match the needs of astronomical data mining. In this paper, we shortly present the methods and discuss an application to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey public data set. In particular, we discuss some preliminary results on the 3-D taxonomy of the nearby (z < 0.5) universe. Using neural networks trained on the available spectroscopic base of knowledge we derived distance estimates for ca. 30 million galaxies distributed over 8,000 sq. deg. We also use unsupervised clustering tools to investigate whether it is possible to characterize in broad morphological bins the nature of each object and produce a reliable list of candidate AGNs and QSOs

    Use of high-plex data reveals novel insights into the tumour microenvironment of clear cell renal cell carcinoma

    This work was supported by Medical Research Scotland (MRS), NHS Lothian, NanoStringTechnologies, and the Industrial Centre for AI Research in Digital Diagnostics (iCAIRD) which is funded by Innovate UK on behalf of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) [project number: 104690].Although Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICIs) have significantly improved the oncological outcomes, about one third of patients affected by Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC) still experience recurrence. Current prognostic algorithms like the Leibovich Score (LS) rely on morphological features manually assessed by pathologists, and are therefore subject to bias. Moreover, these tools do not consider the heterogeneous molecular milieu present in the Tumour Microenvironment (TME), which may have prognostic value. We systematically developed a semi-automated method to investigate 62 markers and their combinations in 150 primary ccRCCs using multiplex Immunofluorescence (mIF), NanoString GeoMx® Digital Spatial Profiling (DSP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted image analysis in order to find novel prognostic signatures and investigate their spatial relationship. We found that coexpression of Cancer Stem Cell (CSC) and Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) markers such as OCT4 and ZEB1 are indicative of poor outcome. OCT4 and the immune markers CD8, CD34 and CD163 significantly stratified patients at intermediate LS. Furthermore, augmenting the LS with OCT4 and CD34 improved patient stratification by outcome. Our results support the hypothesis that combining molecular markers has prognostic value and can be integrated with morphological features to improve risk stratification and personalised therapy. To conclude, GeoMx® DSP and AI image analysis are complementary tools providing high multiplexing capability required to investigate the TME of ccRCC, while reducing observer bias.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    An outbreak of meningococcal disease in the North-East (NE) region of Brazil with 11 cases and seven deaths was reported in 2009. From the 11 cases, five serogroup C meningococcal strains were isolated, four were classified as belonging to the hypervirulent clonal complex ST-103 (cc103) and one strain was not associated with any clonal complex. DNA sequencing of the genes encoding outer membrane proteins PorA and FetA showed genotype P1.5-1,10-1,36-2;F3-9 for all five strains. cc103 was first detected in the southern region of Brazil in 2007, but not associated with outbreaks. MLST analysis detected three new STs among the isolates, showing the ongoing evolution of cc103 and the need of monitoring its spread in the population.

    Mining the SDSS archive. I. Photometric redshifts in the nearby universe

    We present a supervised neural network approach to the determination of photometric redshifts. The method was tuned to match the characteristics of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and it exploits the spectroscopic redshifts provided by this unique survey. In order to train, validate and test the networks we used two galaxy samples drawn from the SDSS spectroscopic dataset: the general galaxy sample (GG) and the luminous red galaxies subsample (LRG). The method consists of a two steps approach. In the first step, objects are classified in nearby (z<0.25) and distant (0.25<z<0.50). In the second step two different networks are separately trained on objects belonging to the two redshift ranges. Using a standard MLP operated in a Bayesian framework, the optimal architectures were found to require 1 hidden layer of 24 (24) and 24 (25) neurons for the GG (LRG) sample. The presence of systematic deviations was then corrected by interpolating the resulting redshifts. The final results on the GG dataset give a robust sigma_z = 0.0208 over the redshift range [0.01, 0.48] and sigma_z = 0.0197 and sigma_z = 0.0238 for the nearby and distant samples respectively. For the LRG subsample we find a robust sigma_z = 0.0164 over the whole range, and sigma_z = 0.0160, sigma_z = 0.0183 for the nearby and distant samples respectively. After training, the networks have been applied to all objects in the SDSS Table GALAXY matching the same selection criteria adopted to build the base of knowledge, and photometric redshifts for ca. 30 million galaxies having z<0.5 were derived.     Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.     Search for stop and higgsino production using diphoton Higgs boson decays

    Results are presented of a search for a "natural" supersymmetry scenario with gauge mediated symmetry breaking. It is assumed that only the supersymmetric partners of the top-quark (stop) and the Higgs boson (higgsino) are accessible. Events are examined in which there are two photons forming a Higgs boson candidate, and at least two b-quark jets. In 19.7 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, recorded in the CMS experiment, no evidence of a signal is found and lower limits at the 95% confidence level are set, excluding the stop mass below 360 to 410 GeV, depending on the higgsino mass

    Juxtaposing BTE and ATE – on the role of the European insurance industry in funding civil litigation

    One of the ways in which legal services are financed, and indeed shaped, is through private insurance arrangement. Two contrasting types of legal expenses insurance contracts (LEI) seem to dominate in Europe: before the event (BTE) and after the event (ATE) legal expenses insurance. Notwithstanding institutional differences between different legal systems, BTE and ATE insurance arrangements may be instrumental if government policy is geared towards strengthening a market-oriented system of financing access to justice for individuals and business. At the same time, emphasizing the role of a private industry as a keeper of the gates to justice raises issues of accountability and transparency, not readily reconcilable with demands of competition. Moreover, multiple actors (clients, lawyers, courts, insurers) are involved, causing behavioural dynamics which are not easily predicted or influenced. Against this background, this paper looks into BTE and ATE arrangements by analysing the particularities of BTE and ATE arrangements currently available in some European jurisdictions and by painting a picture of their respective markets and legal contexts. This allows for some reflection on the performance of BTE and ATE providers as both financiers and keepers. Two issues emerge from the analysis that are worthy of some further reflection. Firstly, there is the problematic long-term sustainability of some ATE products. Secondly, the challenges faced by policymakers that would like to nudge consumers into voluntarily taking out BTE LEI
