Review of ORNL`s MSR technology and status
The current status of molten salt reactor development is discussed with reference to the experience from the Oak Ridge Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. Assessment of the future for this reactor system is reviewed with consideration of both advantages and disadvantages. Application of this concept to ADTT (accelerator driven transmutation technology) needs appears to be feasible by drawing on the MSRE experience. Key chemical considerations remain as: solubility, redox behavior, and chemical activity and their importance to ADTT planning is briefly explained. Priorities in the future development of molten salts for these applications are listed, with the foremost being the acceptance of the 2LiF-BeF{sub 2} solvent system. 8 refs, 2 figs
Explicit asymptotic modelling of transient Love waves propagated along a thin coating
The official published version can be obtained from the link below.An explicit asymptotic model for transient Love waves is derived from the exact equations of anti-plane elasticity. The perturbation procedure relies upon the slow decay of low-frequency Love waves to approximate the displacement field in the substrate by a power series in the depth coordinate. When appropriate decay conditions are imposed on the series, one obtains a model equation governing the displacement at the interface between the coating and the substrate. Unusually, the model equation contains a term with a pseudo-differential operator. This result is confirmed and interpreted by analysing the exact solution obtained by integral transforms. Towards the design of an intensified coagulator
This study compares the hydrodynamics in three millimeter-scale continuous reactor geometries that can be easily used in laboratories and industries â a straight tube, a coiled tube and a Dean-Hex reactor â via numerical simulations and analyses the data in a way that is specifically relevant to coagulation processes, thereby offering insights for engineers to develop new coagulation reactors. A numerical approach based on Lagrangian particle tracking is presented to better understand the impact of the geometry and flow on properties that influence coagulation. The results show that the Dean-Hex meandering geometry provides narrower residence time and shear rate distributions, as well as higher mean average shear rates and Camp number distribution than the other geometries. This is attributed to the generation of transverse flows and radial mixing in the Dean-Hex reactor and suggests that a faster and more homogenous coagulation can be expected
Lepton Flavor Violation in the SUSY-GUT Models with Lopsided Mass Matrix
The tiny neutrino masses measured in the neutrino oscillation experiments can
be naturally explained by the supersymmetric see-saw mechanism. If the
supersymmetry breaking is mediated by gravity, the see-saw models may predict
observable lepton flavor violating effects. In this work, we investigate the
lepton flavor violating process in the kind of neutrino mass
models based on the idea of the ``lopsided'' form of the charged lepton mass
matrix. The constraints set by the muon anomalous magnetic moment are taken
into account. We find the present models generally predict a much larger
branching ratio of than the experimental limit. Conversely,
this process may give strong constraint on the lepton flavor structure.
Following this constraint we then find a new kind of the charged lepton mass
matrix. The feature of the structure is that both the elements between the 2-3
and 1-3 generations are ``lopsided''. This structure produces a very small 1-3
mixing and a large 1-2 mixing in the charged lepton sector, which naturally
leads to small and the LMA solution for the solar neutrino

Human spermatogenic failure purges deleterious mutation load from the autosomes and both sex chromosomes, including the gene DMRT1
Gonadal failure, along with early pregnancy loss and perinatal death, may be an important filter that limits the propagation
of harmful mutations in the human population. We hypothesized that men with spermatogenic impairment, a disease with
unknown genetic architecture and a common cause of male infertility, are enriched for rare deleterious mutations
compared to men with normal spermatogenesis. After assaying genomewide SNPs and CNVs in 323 Caucasian men with
idiopathic spermatogenic impairment and more than 1,100 controls, we estimate that each rare autosomal deletion
detected in our study multiplicatively changes a manâs risk of disease by 10% (OR 1.10 [1.04â1.16], p,261023), rare X-linked
CNVs by 29%, (OR 1.29 [1.11â1.50], p,161023), and rare Y-linked duplications by 88% (OR 1.88 [1.13â3.13], p,0.03). By
contrasting the properties of our case-specific CNVs with those of CNV callsets from cases of autism, schizophrenia, bipolar
disorder, and intellectual disability, we propose that the CNV burden in spermatogenic impairment is distinct from the
burden of large, dominant mutations described for neurodevelopmental disorders. We identified two patients with
deletions of DMRT1, a gene on chromosome 9p24.3 orthologous to the putative sex determination locus of the avian ZW
chromosome system. In an independent sample of Han Chinese men, we identified 3 more DMRT1 deletions in 979 cases of
idiopathic azoospermia and none in 1,734 controls, and found none in an additional 4,519 controls from public databases.
The combined results indicate that DMRT1 loss-of-function mutations are a risk factor and potential genetic cause of human
spermatogenic failure (frequency of 0.38% in 1306 cases and 0% in 7,754 controls, p = 6.261025). Our study identifies other
recurrent CNVs as potential causes of idiopathic azoospermia and generates hypotheses for directing future studies on the

Pharmacological activity of the hydroalcoholic extract from Hovenia dulcis thunberg fruit and the flavonoid dihydromyricetin during hypercholesterolemia induced in rats
Cerebrovascular accidents and coronary artery disease are the leading causes of cardiovascular mortalities in Brazil and high levels of LDL cholesterol are one of the main risk factors. In this context, several plant extracts and natural substances have shown promise as cholesterol-lowering. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of the hydroalcoholic extract of the fruit of H. dulcisand of dihydromyricetin in cholesterol reduction in hypercholesterolemic rats. Forty-two Wistar male rats were distributed into seven groups of six animals that received diets supplemented with 1% cholesterol and 0.3% cholic acid, with the exception of the control group, which received conventional diets. Animals were treated with oral suspensions containing: atorvastatin 1.0 mg/kg; H. dulcisextract at 50.0 and 100.0 mg/kg and dihydromyricetin at 25.0 and 50.0 mg/kg vehicle (control group). The following biochemical markers were evaluated; total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, triglycerides, AST, ALT, and alkaline phosphatase. The hypercholesterolemic diet was effective in inducing hypercholesterolemia, increasing total cholesterol by 112.7% relative to the control group. The treatments with two doses of the extract proved to be promising hypocholesterolemic agents, as they were able to substantially reduce total cholesterol and LDL-C, without significantly altering triglycerides, hepatic transaminases, and alkaline phosphatase, thereby encouraging the studies with the plant H. dulcis. The groups treated with the flavonoid dihydromyricetin, although they showed a significant reduction in total cholesterol and LDL-C, and found increases in triglycerides and hepatic transaminases, which is unwanted in the context of hypercholesterolaemia
Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a
significant distance from their production point into a final state containing
charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is
conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV
and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS
detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles
is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We
observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of
supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the
neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino
masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
