Broadening the Scope of Nanopublications
In this paper, we present an approach for extending the existing concept of
nanopublications --- tiny entities of scientific results in RDF representation
--- to broaden their application range. The proposed extension uses English
sentences to represent informal and underspecified scientific claims. These
sentences follow a syntactic and semantic scheme that we call AIDA (Atomic,
Independent, Declarative, Absolute), which provides a uniform and succinct
representation of scientific assertions. Such AIDA nanopublications are
compatible with the existing nanopublication concept and enjoy most of its
advantages such as information sharing, interlinking of scientific findings,
and detailed attribution, while being more flexible and applicable to a much
wider range of scientific results. We show that users are able to create AIDA
sentences for given scientific results quickly and at high quality, and that it
is feasible to automatically extract and interlink AIDA nanopublications from
existing unstructured data sources. To demonstrate our approach, a web-based
interface is introduced, which also exemplifies the use of nanopublications for
non-scientific content, including meta-nanopublications that describe other
nanopublications.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the 10th Extended Semantic Web

Strongly Anisotropic Transport in Higher Two-Dimensional Landau Levels
Low-temperature, electronic transport in Landau levels N>1 of a
two-dimensional electron system is strongly anisotropic. At half-filling of
either spin level of each such Landau level the magnetoresistance either
collapses to form a deep minimum or is peaked in a sharp maximum, depending on
the in-plane current direction. Such anisotropies are absent in the N=0 and N=1
Landau level, which are dominated by the states of the fractional quantum Hall
effect. The transport anisotropies may be indicative of a new many particle
state, which forms exclusively in higher Landau levels.Comment: 12 pages, 3 Postscript figure
Seasonal Antarctic pressure variability during the twentieth century from spatially complete reconstructions and CAM5 simulations
As most permanent observations in Antarctica started in the 1950s, understanding Antarctic climate variations throughout the twentieth century remains a challenge. To address this issue, the non-summer multi-decadal variability in pressure reconstructions poleward of 60°S is evaluated and assessed in conjunction with climate model simulations throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries to understand historical atmospheric circulation variability over Antarctica. Austral autumn and winter seasons show broadly similar patterns, with negative anomalies in the early twentieth century (1905–1934), positive pressure anomalies in the middle twentieth century (1950–1980), and negative pressure anomalies in the most recent period (1984–2013), consistent with concurrent trends in the SAM index. In autumn, the anomalies are significant in the context of estimates of interannual variability and reconstruction uncertainty across most of the Antarctic continent, and the reconstructed patterns agree best with model-generated patterns when the simulation includes the forced response to tropical sea surface temperatures and external radiative forcing. In winter and spring, the reconstructed anomalies are less significant and are consistent with internal atmospheric variability alone. The specific role of tropical SST variability on pressure trends in these seasons is difficult to assess due to low reconstruction skill in the region of strongest tropical teleconnections, the large internal atmospheric variability, and uncertainty in the SST patterns themselves. Indirect estimates of pressure variability, whether through sea ice reconstructions, proxy records, or improved models and data assimilation schemes, will help to further constrain the magnitude of internal variability relative to the forced responses expected from SST trends and external radiative forcing
Experimental Evidence for a Spin-Polarized Ground State in the \nu=5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect
We study the \nu=5/2 even-denominator fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE)
over a wide range of magnetic (B) field in a heterojunction insulated gate
field-effect transistor (HIGFET). The electron density can be tuned from n=0 to
7.6 \times 10^{11} cm^{-2} with a peak mobility \mu = 5.5 \times 10^6 cm^2/Vs.
The \nu=5/2 state shows a strong minimum in diagonal resistance and a
developing Hall plateau at magnetic fields as high as 12.6T. The strength of
the energy gap varies smoothly with B-field. We interpret these observations as
strong evidence for a spin-polarized ground state at \nu=5/2.Comment: new references adde
Hot Spots and Transition from d-Wave to Another Pairing Symmetry in the Electron-Doped Cuprate Superconductors
We present a simple theoretical explanation for a transition from d-wave to
another superconducting pairing observed in the electron-doped cuprates. The
d_{x^2-y^2} pairing potential Delta, which has the maximal magnitude and
opposite signs at the hot spots on the Fermi surface, becomes suppressed with
the increase of electron doping, because the hot spots approach the Brillouin
zone diagonals, where Delta vanishes. Then, the d_{x^2-y^2} pairing is replaced
by either singlet s-wave or triplet p-wave pairing. We argue in favor of the
latter and discuss experiments to uncover it.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX 4. V.2: Extra figure and many references

In medium T-matrix for superfluid nuclear matter
We study a generalized ladder resummation in the superfluid phase of the
nuclear matter. The approach is based on a conserving generalization of the
usual T-matrix approximation including also anomalous self-energies and
propagators. The approximation here discussed is a generalization of the usual
mean-field BCS approach and of the in medium T-matrix approximation in the
normal phase. The numerical results in this work are obtained in the
quasi-particle approximation. Properties of the resulting self-energy,
superfluid gap and spectral functions are studied.Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures, Introduction rewritten, Refs. adde
Relic neutrino masses and the highest energy cosmic rays
We consider the possibility that a large fraction of the ultrahigh energy
cosmic rays are decay products of Z bosons which were produced in the
scattering of ultrahigh energy cosmic neutrinos on cosmological relic
neutrinos. We compare the observed ultrahigh energy cosmic ray spectrum with
the one predicted in the above Z-burst scenario and determine the required mass
of the heaviest relic neutrino as well as the necessary ultrahigh energy cosmic
neutrino flux via a maximum likelihood analysis. We show that the value of the
neutrino mass obtained in this way is fairly robust against variations in
presently unknown quantities, like the amount of neutrino clustering, the
universal radio background, and the extragalactic magnetic field, within their
anticipated uncertainties. Much stronger systematics arises from different
possible assumptions about the diffuse background of ordinary cosmic rays from
unresolved astrophysical sources. In the most plausible case that these
ordinary cosmic rays are protons of extragalactic origin, one is lead to a
required neutrino mass in the range 0.08 eV - 1.3 eV at the 68 % confidence
level. This range narrows down considerably if a particular universal radio
background is assumed, e.g. to 0.08 eV - 0.40 eV for a large one. The required
flux of ultrahigh energy cosmic neutrinos near the resonant energy should be
detected in the near future by AMANDA, RICE, and the Pierre Auger Observatory,
otherwise the Z-burst scenario will be ruled out.Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures, REVTeX
Changing practices: The specialised domestic violence court process
Specialised domestic violence courts, initially developed in the United States of America, have been recognised by other jurisdictions including Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. This article presents a case study of K Court in Toronto, drawing upon documentary evidence, direct observations and interviews with key informants. It is argued that the specialised domestic violence court process includes changing practices of some of the key stakeholders. Learning lessons from abroad can offer jurisdictions insights that can steer implementation of appropriate practices in the field
Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment
This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and
W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with
the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and
the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto
the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions
f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV
and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw
> 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour,
are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017
+/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second
include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables,

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at
the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS
detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4
fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to
Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks
corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new
structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is
also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table,
