    Effects of litter mixing on litter decomposition and soilproperties along simulated invasion gradients of non-nativetrees

    Aims Plant invasions generally lead to mixtures betweennative and non-native litter. We assess the interactionsbetween leaf litters from two invasive non-native trees(Robinia pseudoacia or Ailanthus altissima) and the nativePopulus alba on litter decomposition, nutrient releaseand soil properties along two gradients of invasion.Methods Microcosms with field-collected soil coveredby varying proportions of native and non-native littersimulated the two invasion gradients. We assessed theproportion of remaining litter mass and nutrient mass(N, P, C), and soil C, N-NO3−, total N, and pH, fivetimes throughout a period of 11 months. Observedvalues were compared to the expected values on theassumption of no interactions.Results Litter mass and C mass decayed slower inRobinia and faster in Ailanthus than in Populus. Thethree species immobilized N and P. Soil properties didnot differ across pure litters. Both litter mixture gradientsshowed additive or antagonistic interactions onlitter decomposition, whereas N and P mass were equalor higher than expected. The proportion of non-nativelitter in the mixture had non-linear effects on mostvariables, suggesting that the impact of these nonnativetrees on litter decay levels off or even declinesas they become more abundant.Conclusion The impacts of Ailanthus and Robinia litteron soil processes should not be derived from singlespecies experiments, both due to non-additive effectsand to non-linear responses to litter abundance.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y UniversidadesComunidad de Madri

    Simulated effects of herb competition on planted Quercus faginea seedlings in Mediterranean abandoned cropland

    We tested simulated effects of herb competition on the performance of planted seedlings of Quercus faginea ssp. faginea in Mediterranean abandoned cropland. We produced three types of environment with respect to herb competition: absence of competition (AC), below-ground competition (BGC), and total competition (TC). We assessed the performance of Q. faginea seedlings in each treatment in five ways: (1) seedling mortality, (2) leaf length and total plant leaf area, (3) water potential, (4) total biomass and biomass allocation, and (5) non-structural carbohydrate storage in different plant organs. We also measured (6) soil moisture at different depths and (7) biomass production of herbs. The TC treatment reduced water availability more than the BGC treatment, in agreement with the most pronounced water stress in seedlings under TC conditions. BGC and TC treatments showed a high and similar seedling mortality, which was one order of magnitude higher than that in the AC treatment. Competition treatments affected glucose concentration in both shoots and roots, and followed the rank TC > BGC > AC. Q. faginea seedlings might compensate a lower water availability through glucose accumulation in leaves to reduce the osmotic potential. There was a maximum starch concentration in the BGC treatment that hints that a moderate resource limitation would limit tissue growth but not carbon assimilation. We conclude that the negative effects of herbs on Q. faginea seedlings are mostly a result of competition for water, and that this competition is noticeable since the earliest stages of the establishment.     Decomposition and biological colonization of native and exotic leaf litter in a stream

    Riparian invasion by exotic trees may lead to changes in the quality of leaf-litter inputs to freshwater ecosystems. Leaflitterinputs are especially important in headwater streams, where aquatic food webs largely depend on the organic matterprovided by the terrestrial vegetation. In a headwater stream of Central Spain, North of Guadalajara Province (Tagus basin)we compared the decomposition and biological colonization of leaf litter among two exotic (Ailanthus altissima Mill. Swingleand Robinia pseudoacacia L.) and two native trees (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. and Populus alba L.) co-existing in riparianzones.We hypothesized a lower biological colonization of exotic leaves due to organisms have not co-evolved with the exotictrees according to the Novel Weapons Hypothesis (NWH) and, consequently, lower decomposition rates of exotic leaves. Totest our hypothesis, litter bags with different mesh sizes (coarse (C) and fine (F)), were used to distinguish between the totaland microbial decomposition. The litter bags were placed in the stream and recovered after 2, 20, 39, 62 and 82 days ofincubation. After each collection, we assessed the amount of remaining litter, analysed the nitrogen (N) and phosphorous(P) in the litter, identified the macroinvertebrates and quantified the fungal biomass. Consistent with our hypothesis, we foundgreater fungal biomass buildup on native leaves than on exotic leaves. However, decomposition rates (k) were species-specific,being the ranking in C-bags (A. altissima = F. angustifolia > P. alba > R. pseudoacacia) slightly different than in F-bags (A.altissima > F. angustifolia > P. alba > R. pseudoacacia).La invasión de las riberas por árboles exóticos puede provocar cambios en la calidad de las entradas de hojarasca a los ecosistemas de agua dulce, especialmente importantes en arroyos de cabecera, donde las redes tróficas dependen en gran medida de los aportes de materia orgánica proporcionada por la vegetación terrestre. En un arroyo de cabecera del Centro de España, Norte de la provincia de Guadalajara (Cuenca del Tajo), comparamos entre la descomposición y colonización biológica de la hojarasca de dos árboles exóticos (Ailanthus altissima Mill. Swingle y Robinia pseudoacacia L.) y dos nativos (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. y Populus alba L.), que coexisten en zonas de ribera. Hipotetizamos que habrá una menor colonización biológica de las hojas exóticas debido a que los organismos del arroyo no han co-evolucionado con los árboles exóticos de acuerdo con la Hipótesis de las Nuevas Armas (NWH) y, por tanto, menores tasas de descomposición de éstas. Para testar nuestra hipótesis, se sumergieron en el arroyo bolsas de descomposición con distinta de luz de malla, gruesa (C) y fina (F) –usadas para distinguir entre descomposición total y microbiana– y se recuperaron después de 2, 20, 39, 62 y 82 días de incubación. Después de la recolección pesamos la cantidad de hojarasca remanente, analizamos el nitrógeno (N) y fósforo (P) de la hojarasca, identificamos los macroinvertebrados y cuantificamos la biomasa fúngica. De acuerdo con nuestra hipótesis, encontramos mayor biomasa fúngica acumulada en hojas nativas que en exóticas. Sin embargo, la tasa de descomposición (k) fue específica de la especie, siendo el ranking en las bolsas C (A. altissima = F. angustifolia > P. alba > R. pseudoacacia) ligeramente diferente al de las bolsas F (A. altissima > F. angustifolia > P. alba > R. pseudoacacia). Ambas k (en bolsas C y F) se correlacionaron con lignina, fibra ácido detergente (ADF) y lignina:P. No hubo un efecto claro de las especies exóticas sobre las variables de macroinvertebrados, pero la contribución de los macroinvertebrados a la descomposición fue menor en la hojarasca exótica que en la nativa, como muestra el menor ratio entre k en bolsas C y F (kC : kF). Nuestros resultados apoyan que las especies invasoras pueden impactar tanto la colonización biológica como las tasas de descomposición de la hojarasca en los ecosistemas de arroyos mediante el aporte de hojarasca de distinta calidad respecto de la vegetación nativa.     Validación de la versión en español de la escala de evaluación del trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad (ADHD-RS-IV.es) en una muestra española

    Objetivos El objetivo de este estudio es validar la versión en castellano del ADHD-RS-IV (ADHD-RS-IV.es) en una muestra española. Métodos A partir de una muestra total de 652 niños y adolescentes (rango edad: 6-17 años; media [DE] = 11,14 [3,27] años), se incluyó a 518 pacientes con TDAH (criterios DSM-IV-TR) y a 134 controles sanos. Para la evaluación de la estructura factorial, la validez y la fiabilidad de la escala se realizó un análisis factorial confirmatorio (CFA) mediante structural equation modeling en una matriz de correlaciones policóricas, y usando el método de máxima verosimilitud para la estimación. Se calcularon la validez discriminante y su valor predictivo mediante curvas receiver operating characteristics. Resultados La escala en castellano mostró una consistencia interna elevada, tanto para la escala total como para sus subescalas. El coeficiente alfa de Cronbach era 0,94 para la escala total y ≥ 0,90 para las subescalas. Los valores alfa ordinales eran 0,95 para la escala total y ≥ 0,90 para las subescalas. El análisis CFA mostró un modelo de 2 factores (inatención e hiperactividad/impulsividad) intercorrelacionados. La escala ofrece buen poder discriminante (AUC = 0,97). Conclusiones La versión española del ADHD-RS-IV (ADHD-RS-IV.es) mostró una estructura bifactorial consistente con los modelos del DSM-IV-TR y DSM-5, y con el modelo propuesto por el autor de la escala original. Además, posee un alto poder discriminante, lo que lo convierte en un instrumento válido y fiable para medir la presencia y severidad de síntomas de TDAH en la población española.Objectives The purpose of this study is to validate a Spanish-language version of the 18-item ADHD Rating Scale-IV (ADHD-RS-IV.es) in a Spanish sample. Methods From a total sample of 652 children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years (mean age was 11.14 ± 3.27), we included 518 who met the DSM-IV-TR criteria for ADHD and 134 healthy controls. To evaluate the factorial structure, validity, and reliability of the scale, we performed a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) using structural equation modelling on a polychoric correlation matrix and maximum likelihood estimation. The scale's discriminant validity and predictive value were estimated using ROC (receiver operating characteristics) curve analysis. Results Both the full scale and the subscales of the Spanish-language version of the ADHD-RS-IV showed good internal consistency. Cronbach's alpha was 0.94 for the full scale and ≥ 0.90 for the subscales, and ordinal alpha was 0.95 and ≥ 0.90, respectively. CFA showed that a two-factor model (inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity) provided the best fit for the data. ADHD-RS-IV.es offered good discriminant ability to distinguish between patients with ADHD and controls (AUC = 0.97). Conclusions The two-factor structure of the Spanish-language version of the ADHD-RS-IV (ADHD-RS-IV.es) is consistent with those of the DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5 as well as with the model proposed by the author of the original scale. Furthermore, it has good discriminant ability. ADHD-RS-IV.es is therefore a valid and reliable tool for determining presence and severity of ADHD symptoms in the Spanish population

    Leaf litter traits of invasive alien species slow down decomposition compared to Spanish natives: a broad phylogenetic comparison.

    Leaf traits related to the performance of invasive alien species can influence nutrient cycling through litter decomposition. However, there is no consensus yet about whether there are consistent differences in functional leaf traits between invasive and native species that also manifest themselves through their "after life" effects on litter decomposition. When addressing this question it is important to avoid confounding effects of other plant traits related to early phylogenetic divergences and to understand the mechanism underlying the observed results to predict which invasive species will exert larger effects on nutrient cycling. We compared initial leaf litter traits, and their effect on decomposability as tested in standardized incubations, in 19 invasive-native pairs of co-familial species from Spain. They included 12 woody and seven herbaceous alien species representative of the Spanish invasive flora. The predictive power of leaf litter decomposition rates followed the order: growth form > family > status (invasive vs. native) > leaf type. Within species pairs litter decomposition tended to be slower and more dependent on N and P in invaders than in natives. This difference was likely driven by the higher lignin content of invader leaves. Although our study has the limitation of not representing the natural conditions from each invaded community, it suggests a potential slowing down of the nutrient cycle at ecosystem scale upon invasion. © Springer-Verlag 2009

    Role of age and comorbidities in mortality of patients with infective endocarditis

    [Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality. [Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years,and ≥ 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk. [Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared,the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality. [Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group

    Combinations of single-top-quark production cross-section measurements and vertical bar f(LV)V(tb)vertical bar determinations at root s=7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS and CMS experiments

    This paper presents the combinations of single-top-quark production cross-section measurements by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, using data from LHC proton-proton collisions at = 7 and 8 TeV corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.17 to 5.1 fb(-1) at = 7 TeV and 12.2 to 20.3 fb(-1) at = 8 TeV. These combinations are performed per centre-of-mass energy and for each production mode: t-channel, tW, and s-channel. The combined t-channel cross-sections are 67.5 +/- 5.7 pb and 87.7 +/- 5.8 pb at = 7 and 8 TeV respectively. The combined tW cross-sections are 16.3 +/- 4.1 pb and 23.1 +/- 3.6 pb at = 7 and 8 TeV respectively. For the s-channel cross-section, the combination yields 4.9 +/- 1.4 pb at = 8 TeV. The square of the magnitude of the CKM matrix element V-tb multiplied by a form factor f(LV) is determined for each production mode and centre-of-mass energy, using the ratio of the measured cross-section to its theoretical prediction. It is assumed that the top-quark-related CKM matrix elements obey the relation |V-td|, |V-ts| << |V-tb|. All the |f(LV)V(tb)|(2) determinations, extracted from individual ratios at = 7 and 8 TeV, are combined, resulting in |f(LV)V(tb)| = 1.02 +/- 0.04 (meas.) +/- 0.02 (theo.). All combined measurements are consistent with their corresponding Standard Model predictions.Peer reviewe
