    Towards a safety learning culture for the shipping industry : a white paper

    Within the framework of the EU-funded SAFEMODE project, a series of confidential, in-depth interviews of seafarers and investigators was carried out to ascertain the current status of Safety Culture in the shipping industry, and to recommend possible avenues for improvement. The interview script covered practices in incident and accident investigation and reporting, the Human Element, the factors that keep the ship safe, the role of the Safety Management System, Just Culture and Safety Learning. The seafarers’ and investigators’ interviews were complemented by small focus groups with unions, education and safety bodies. Participants were open and genuine in providing their opinions, as anonymity was preserved. The general consensus among interviewees was that seafarers are the ones who keep ships safe at sea, which is a good omen for Safety Culture in the shipping industry. The originally intended ‘destination’ for the shipping industry was to be Just Culture, but the interviews quickly revealed that Safety Learning, already evident in some parts of the industry, appeared a more pragmatic and attainable destination, one that could add safety improvements and shore up Safety Cultur

    XI Congreso de IngenierĂ­a del Transporte (CIT 2014)During the past years, cycling use has been promoted in our cities as an alternative to other modes of transport. One of the main objectives of the utilization of the bicycles is to reduce the use of private vehicles powered by fossil fuel. In this paper some of the advantages and benefits of the cycling use are presented, and some factors that influence its utilization are analysed. In particular, the study is focused on the barrier elements and, more specifically, in the structural barrier factors. Further on, more than 70 kilometres of bicycle network in several cities of the region of Castile and Leon (Spain) have been analysed, in order to see their potential influence on the use of the bicycle. From the results of this analysis some recurring problems emerge and make us identify that the total length of the bicycle network is not so important as the number of destinations and completed itineraries that can be reached in an effective and safe way

    Discutindo a educação ambiental no cotidiano escolar: desenvolvimento de projetos na escola formação inicial e continuada de professores

    A presente pesquisa buscou discutir como a Educação Ambiental (EA) vem sendo trabalhada, no Ensino Fundamental e como os docentes desta escola compreendem e vem inserindo a EA no cotidiano escolar., em uma escola estadual do município de Tangará da Serra/MT, Brasil. Para tanto, realizou-se entrevistas com os professores que fazem parte de um projeto interdisciplinar de EA na escola pesquisada. Verificou-se que o projeto da escola não vem conseguindo alcançar os objetivos propostos por: desconhecimento do mesmo, pelos professores; formação deficiente dos professores, não entendimento da EA como processo de ensino-aprendizagem, falta de recursos didáticos, planejamento inadequado das atividades. A partir dessa constatação, procurou-se debater a impossibilidade de tratar do tema fora do trabalho interdisciplinar, bem como, e principalmente, a importância de um estudo mais aprofundado de EA, vinculando teoria e prática, tanto na formação docente, como em projetos escolares, a fim de fugir do tradicional vínculo “EA e ecologia, lixo e horta”.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació

    Measurement of the cross section for production of bb̄X decaying to muons in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV

    A measurement of the inclusive cross section for the process pp -> b (b) over barX -> mu mu X' at root s = 7TeV is presented, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 27.9 pb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. By selecting pairs of muons each with pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar bX -> mu mu X') = 26.4 +/- 0.1 (stat.) +/- 2.4 (syst.) +/- 1.1 (lumi.) nb is obtained for muons with transverse momentum p(T) > 4 GeV, and 5.12 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.48 (syst.) +/- 0.20 (lumi.) nb for p(T) > 6 GeV. These results are compared to QCD predictions at leading and next-to-leading orders

    Ratios of dijet production cross sections as a function of the absolute difference in rapidity between jets in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7TeV

    A study of dijet production in proton-proton collisions was performed at root s = 7 TeV for jets with p(T) > 35 GeV and vertical bar y vertical bar < 4.7 using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2010. Events with at least one pair of jets are denoted as "inclusive". Events with exactly one pair of jets are called "exclusive". The ratio of the cross section of all pairwise combinations of jets to the exclusive dijet cross section as a function of the rapidity difference between jets vertical bar Delta y vertical bar is measured for the first time up to vertical bar Delta y vertical bar = 9.2. The ratio of the cross section for the pair consisting of the most forward and the most backward jet from the inclusive sample to the exclusive dijet cross section is also presented. The predictions of the Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA6 and PYTHIA8 agree with the measurements. In both ratios the HERWIG++ generator exhibits a more pronounced rise versus vertical bar Delta y vertical bar than observed in the data. The BFKL-motivated generators CASCADE and HEJ+ARIADNE predict for these ratios a significantly stronger rise than observed

    Cultural Differences in Attitudes Toward Action and Inaction: The Role of Dialecticism

    The current research examined whether nations differ in their attitudes toward action and inaction. It was anticipated that members of dialectical East Asian societies would show a positive association in their attitudes toward action/inaction. However, members of non-dialectical European-American societies were expected to show a negative association in their attitudes toward action/inaction. Young adults in 19 nations completed measures of dialectical thinking and attitudes toward action/inaction. Results from multi-level modeling showed, as predicted, that people from high dialecticism nations reported a more positive association in their attitudes toward action and inaction than people from low dialecticism nations. Furthermore, these findings remained after controlling for cultural differences in individualism-collectivism, neuroticism, gross-domestic product, and response style. Discussion highlights the implications of these findings for action/inaction goals, dialecticism, and culture. Š The Author(s) 2013
