Monolithic simulation of convection-coupled phase-change - verification and reproducibility
Phase interfaces in melting and solidification processes are strongly
affected by the presence of convection in the liquid. One way of modeling their
transient evolution is to couple an incompressible flow model to an energy
balance in enthalpy formulation. Two strong nonlinearities arise, which account
for the viscosity variation between phases and the latent heat of fusion at the
phase interface.
The resulting coupled system of PDE's can be solved by a single-domain
semi-phase-field, variable viscosity, finite element method with monolithic
system coupling and global Newton linearization. A robust computational model
for realistic phase-change regimes furthermore requires a flexible
implementation based on sophisticated mesh adaptivity. In this article, we
present first steps towards implementing such a computational model into a
simulation tool which we call Phaseflow.
Phaseflow utilizes the finite element software FEniCS, which includes a
dual-weighted residual method for goal-oriented adaptive mesh refinement.
Phaseflow is an open-source, dimension-independent implementation that, upon an
appropriate parameter choice, reduces to classical benchmark situations
including the lid-driven cavity and the Stefan problem. We present and discuss
numerical results for these, an octadecane PCM convection-coupled melting
benchmark, and a preliminary 3D convection-coupled melting example,
demonstrating the flexible implementation. Though being preliminary, the latter
is, to our knowledge, the first published 3D result for this method. In our
work, we especially emphasize reproducibility and provide an easy-to-use
portable software container using Docker.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figure
Regulation of Star Formation Rates in Multiphase Galactic Disks: a Thermal/Dynamical Equilibrium Model
We develop a model for regulation of galactic star formation rates Sigma_SFR
in disk galaxies, in which ISM heating by stellar UV plays a key role. By
requiring simultaneous thermal and (vertical) dynamical equilibrium in the
diffuse gas, and star formation at a rate proportional to the mass of the
self-gravitating component, we obtain a prediction for Sigma_SFR as a function
of the total gaseous surface density Sigma and the density of stars + dark
matter, rho_sd. The physical basis of this relationship is that thermal
pressure in the diffuse ISM, which is proportional to the UV heating rate and
therefore to Sigma_SFR, must adjust to match the midplane pressure set by the
vertical gravitational field. Our model applies to regions where Sigma < 100
Msun/pc^2. In low-Sigma_SFR (outer-galaxy) regions where diffuse gas dominates,
the theory predicts Sigma_SFR \propto Sigma (rho_sd)^1/2. The decrease of
thermal equilibrium pressure when Sigma_SFR is low implies, consistent with
observations, that star formation can extend (with declining efficiency) to
large radii in galaxies, rather than having a sharp cutoff. The main parameters
entering our model are the ratio of thermal pressure to total pressure in the
diffuse ISM, the fraction of diffuse gas that is in the warm phase, and the
star formation timescale in self-gravitating clouds; all of these are (in
principle) direct observables. At low surface density, our model depends on the
ratio of the mean midplane FUV intensity (or thermal pressure in the diffuse
gas) to the star formation rate, which we set based on Solar neighborhood
values. We compare our results to recent observations, showing good agreement
overall for azimuthally-averaged data in a set of spiral galaxies. For the
large flocculent spiral galaxies NGC 7331 and NGC 5055, the correspondence
between theory and observation is remarkably close.Comment: 49 pages, 7 figures; accepted by the Ap.
An Aromatic Inventory of the Local Volume
Using infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we perform the
first inventory of aromatic feature emission (AFE, but also commonly referred
to as PAH emission) for a statistically complete sample of star-forming
galaxies in the local volume. The photometric methodology involved is
calibrated and demonstrated to recover the aromatic fraction of the IRAC 8
micron flux with a standard deviation of 6% for a training set of 40 SINGS
galaxies (ranging from stellar to dust dominated) with both suitable
mid-infrared Spitzer IRS spectra and equivalent photometry. A potential factor
of two improvement could be realized with suitable 5.5 and 10 micron
photometry, such as what may be provided in the future by JWST. The resulting
technique is then applied to mid-infrared photometry for the 258 galaxies from
the Local Volume Legacy (LVL) survey, a large sample dominated in number by
low-luminosity dwarf galaxies for which obtaining comparable mid-infrared
spectroscopy is not feasible. We find the total LVL luminosity due to five
strong aromatic features in the 8 micron complex to be 2.47E10 solar
luminosities with a mean volume density of 8.8E6 solar luminosities per cubic
Megaparsec. Twenty-four of the LVL galaxies, corresponding to a luminosity cut
at M = -18.22 in the B band, account for 90% of the aromatic luminosity. Using
oxygen abundances compiled from the literature for 129 of the 258 LVL galaxies,
we find a correlation between metallicity and the aromatic to total infrared
emission ratio but not the aromatic to total 8 micron dust emission ratio. A
possible explanation is that metallicity plays a role in the abundance of
aromatic molecules relative to the total dust content, but other factors such
as star formation and/or the local radiation field affect the excitation of

Probing the Dust Properties of Galaxies at Submillimetre Wavelengths II. Dust-to-gas mass ratio trends with metallicity and the submm excess in dwarf galaxies
We are studying the effects of submm observations on the total dust mass and
thus dust-to-gas mass ratio measurements. We gather a wide sample of galaxies
that have been observed at submm wavelengths to model their Spectral Energy
Distributions using submm observations and then without submm observational
constraints in order to quantify the error on the dust mass when submm data are
not available. Our model does not make strong assumptions on the dust
temperature distribution to precisely avoid submm biaises in the study. Our
sample includes 52 galaxies observed at submm wavelengths. Out of these, 9
galaxies show an excess in submm which is not accounted for in our fiducial
model, most of these galaxies being low- metallicity dwarfs. We chose to add an
independant very cold dust component (T=10K) to account for this excess. We
find that metal-rich galaxies modelled with submm data often show lower dust
masses than when modelled without submm data. Indeed, these galaxies usually
have dust SEDs that peaks at longer wavelengths and require constraints above
160 um to correctly position the peak and sample the submillimeter slope of
their SEDs and thus correctly cover the dust temperature distribution. On the
other hand, some metal-poor dwarf galaxies modelled with submm data show higher
dust masses than when modelled without submm data. Using submm constraints for
the dust mass estimates, we find a tightened correlation of the dust-to-gas
mass ratio with the metallicity of the galaxies. We also often find that when
there is a submm excess present, it occurs preferentially in low-metallicity
galaxies. We analyse the conditions for the presence of this excess and find a

Massive stars exploding in a He-rich circumstellar medium. I. Type Ibn (SN 2006jc-like) events
We present new spectroscopic and photometric data of the type Ibn supernovae
2006jc, 2000er and 2002ao. We discuss the general properties of this recently
proposed supernova family, which also includes SN 1999cq. The early-time
monitoring of SN 2000er traces the evolution of this class of objects during
the first few days after the shock breakout. An overall similarity in the
photometric and spectroscopic evolution is found among the members of this
group, which would be unexpected if the energy in these core-collapse events
was dominated by the interaction between supernova ejecta and circumstellar
medium. Type Ibn supernovae appear to be rather normal type Ib/c supernova
explosions which occur within a He-rich circumstellar environment. SNe Ibn are
therefore likely produced by the explosion of Wolf-Rayet progenitors still
embedded in the He-rich material lost by the star in recent mass-loss episodes,
which resemble known luminous blue variable eruptions. The evolved Wolf-Rayet
star could either result from the evolution of a very massive star or be the
more evolved member of a massive binary system. We also suggest that there are
a number of arguments in favour of a type Ibn classification for the historical
SN 1885A (S-Andromedae), previously considered as an anomalous type Ia event

Heterogeneity in genetic admixture across different regions of Argentina
The population of Argentina is the result of the intermixing between several groups, including Indigenous American, European and African populations. Despite the commonly held idea that the population of Argentina is of mostly European origin, multiple studies have shown that this process of admixture had an impact in the entire Argentine population. In the present study we characterized the distribution of Indigenous American, European and African ancestry among individuals from different regions of Argentina and evaluated the level of discrepancy between self-reported grandparental origin and genetic ancestry estimates. A set of 99 autosomal ancestry informative markers (AIMs) was genotyped in a sample of 441 Argentine individuals to estimate genetic ancestry. We used non-parametric tests to evaluate statistical significance. The average ancestry for the Argentine sample overall was 65% European (95%CI: 63-68%), 31% Indigenous American (28-33%) and 4% African (3-4%). We observed statistically significant differences in European ancestry across Argentine regions [Buenos Aires province (BA) 76%, 95%CI: 73-79%; Northeast (NEA) 54%, 95%CI: 49-58%; Northwest (NWA) 33%, 95%CI: 21-41%; South 54%, 95%CI: 49-59%; p<0.0001] as well as between the capital and immediate suburbs of Buenos Aires city compared to more distant suburbs [80% (95%CI: 75-86%) versus 68% (95%CI: 58-77%), p = 0.01]. European ancestry among individuals that declared all grandparents born in Europe was 91% (95%CI: 88-94%) compared to 54% (95%CI: 51-57%) among those with no European grandparents (p<0.001). Our results demonstrate the range of variation in genetic ancestry among Argentine individuals from different regions in the country, highlighting the importance of taking this variation into account in genetic association and admixture mapping studies in this population

A Variation of the DeLone and McLean Model for Collaborative Commerce Services: A Structural Equation Model
This study intends to provide theory-driven empirical findings of the factors affecting users’ loyalty to a collaborative commerce platform provider and further suggests that the platform loyalty lead to future extended use of collaborative commerce services. DeLone and McLean model serves as a basic framework for this study. Our variation of the model tested the impact of perceived value, relationship quality, and service quality on platform loyalty, which would influence future extended use of collaboration commerce services. Our results confirm that perceived value and platform quality were the best predictors for platform loyalty, which in turn, had a positive influence on future extended use intention
Integrating sequence and array data to create an improved 1000 Genomes Project haplotype reference panel
A major use of the 1000 Genomes Project (1000GP) data is genotype imputation in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Here we develop a method to estimate haplotypes from low-coverage sequencing data that can take advantage of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) microarray genotypes on the same samples. First the SNP array data are phased to build a backbone (or 'scaffold') of haplotypes across each chromosome. We then phase the sequence data 'onto' this haplotype scaffold. This approach can take advantage of relatedness between sequenced and non-sequenced samples to improve accuracy. We use this method to create a new 1000GP haplotype reference set for use by the human genetic community. Using a set of validation genotypes at SNP and bi-allelic indels we show that these haplotypes have lower genotype discordance and improved imputation performance into downstream GWAS samples, especially at low-frequency variants. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited. Seasonal and spatial variability in condition of age-0+ Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi Marini, 1933, in the San Jorge Gulf (Argentina): A bottom-up perspective
In the north Patagonian region of the Argentinean Continental Shelf, the San Jorge Gulf (SJG; 45°‐47°S, 65°30ʹ‐67°30ʹW) is the main nursery ground of age‐0+ Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi Marini, 1933, one of the most important fishery resources in Argentina. The gulf exhibits strong seasonal and spatial fluctuations in environmental features, which might affect survival of age‐0+ individuals and recruitment to the adult population. Our main goal was to evaluate the seasonal and spatial dynamics of their nutritional status within the SJG in winter 2016, spring 2016 and summer 2017. Condition indices (relative condition factor Kn, hepatosomatic index HSI and liver lipid content %L) and diet information (feeding incidence and relative importance of prey) were combined with physical (temperature and salinity) and biological (satellite chlorophyll‐a concentration; chl‐a) data. Age‐0+ condition indices and prey intake showed significant seasonal variations, with minimum values in winter, intermediate in summer and maximum in spring, strongly coupled to the mean chl‐a concentration in each season. Herbivorous euphausiids Euphausia spp. were the preferred prey along the study period. A bottom‐up effect on condition of age‐0+ hake is suggested, manifested as lower condition values in winter, the less productive season. Spatially, better conditioned individuals matched sectors of the gulf where chl‐a concentrations were higher, coupled to the presence of frontal systems. Monitoring age‐0+ hake nutritional status is relevant in the current global change scenario, which might modify phytoplankton biomass and composition and, consequently, the herbivorous zooplankton abundances.Fil: Temperoni, Brenda.
