    Is Seeing Believing? Identifying Aspects of Informative Videos that Indicate Objectivity

    Information in online videos can be misleading and unreliable. Video users tend to select videos with misleading information (Butler, 2013). To facilitate video users in their selection of videos they need an objectivity measure (Palumbo, 2012). We propose thirteen aspects of video that contribute to the measure of its objectivity. We ranked the aspects according to their contribution to the objectivity measurement. Spoken content, vocabulary use, title, knowledge of the actor on the subject and facial expressions are the five most prominent contributors. The measurement of objectivity in videos was explored across the three persuasion dimensions: 1) ethos, 2) pathos, 3) logos. Expert opinions on which aspects can be used for video objectivity measurement were solicited. A user survey was carried out to assess the degree to which these aspects contribute to measuring the objectivity

    Broad targeting of resistance to apoptosis in cancer

    Apoptosis or programmed cell death is natural way of removing aged cells from the body. Most of the anti-cancer therapies trigger apoptosis induction and related cell death networks to eliminate malignant cells. However, in cancer, de-regulated apoptotic signaling, particularly the activation of an anti-apoptotic systems, allows cancer cells to escape this program leading to uncontrolled proliferation resulting in tumor survival, therapeutic resistance and recurrence of cancer. This resistance is a complicated phenomenon that emanates from the interactions of various molecules and signaling pathways. In this comprehensive review we discuss the various factors contributing to apoptosis resistance in cancers. The key resistance targets that are discussed include (1) Bcl-2 and Mcl-1 proteins; (2) autophagy processes; (3) necrosis and necroptosis; (4) heat shock protein signaling; (5) the proteasome pathway; (6) epigenetic mechanisms; and (7) aberrant nuclear export signaling. The shortcomings of current therapeutic modalities are highlighted and a broad spectrum strategy using approaches including (a) gossypol; (b) epigallocatechin-3-gallate; (c) UMI-77 (d) triptolide and (e) selinexor that can be used to overcome cell death resistance is presented. This review provides a roadmap for the design of successful anti-cancer strategies that overcome resistance to apoptosis for better therapeutic outcome in patients with cancer

    Associations between depressive symptoms and disease progression in older patients with chronic kidney disease: results of the EQUAL study

    Background Depressive symptoms are associated with adverse clinical outcomes in patients with end-stage kidney disease; however, few small studies have examined this association in patients with earlier phases of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We studied associations between baseline depressive symptoms and clinical outcomes in older patients with advanced CKD and examined whether these associations differed depending on sex. Methods CKD patients (>= 65 years; estimated glomerular filtration rate <= 20 mL/min/1.73 m(2)) were included from a European multicentre prospective cohort between 2012 and 2019. Depressive symptoms were measured by the five-item Mental Health Inventory (cut-off <= 70; 0-100 scale). Cox proportional hazard analysis was used to study associations between depressive symptoms and time to dialysis initiation, all-cause mortality and these outcomes combined. A joint model was used to study the association between depressive symptoms and kidney function over time. Analyses were adjusted for potential baseline confounders. Results Overall kidney function decline in 1326 patients was -0.12 mL/min/1.73 m(2)/month. A total of 515 patients showed depressive symptoms. No significant association was found between depressive symptoms and kidney function over time (P = 0.08). Unlike women, men with depressive symptoms had an increased mortality rate compared with those without symptoms [adjusted hazard ratio 1.41 (95% confidence interval 1.03-1.93)]. Depressive symptoms were not significantly associated with a higher hazard of dialysis initiation, or with the combined outcome (i.e. dialysis initiation and all-cause mortality). Conclusions There was no significant association between depressive symptoms at baseline and decline in kidney function over time in older patients with advanced CKD. Depressive symptoms at baseline were associated with a higher mortality rate in men

    1. The application of population genetic analysis and molecular ecological approaches allows us to examine the invasion of species in the wild. In particular, we can gain an insight into the role of dispersal, a key determinant of the invasion and population dynamics of important pest species. Since the 1980s, severe outbreaks of the winter moth, Operophtera brumata (Linnaeus), have caused extensive damage to heather moorlands in the Orkney Isles. The population genetic structure of O. brumata in Orkney was examined in order to establish whether the widely dispersed outbreaking populations are connected. 2. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis showed a high level of genetic diversity within subpopulations. This is consistent with an initial mass colonisation event and/or continuing dispersal between populations of O. brumata in Orkney. 3. Genetic differentiation among populations is low, and although some weak isolation by distance is detectable, no effect of isolation as a result of a sea barrier was found. High gene flow between populations is consistent with the low genetic differentiation observed, although there is evidence to suggest that the populations are not panmictic. 4. Given the limited dispersal of adults, the present results suggest that larvae may disperse over considerable distances by ballooning on strong winds across the Orkney Isles

    Sexually-Transmitted Disease in a Sub-Tropical Eucalypt Beetle: Infection of the Fittest?

    The ecology of sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) is topical in scientific research, and their demography and epidemiology differ from those of classical pathogens and parasites. Transmission of STDs is generally density-independent, occurs via the "fittest" individuals in a population (or, at least, those that achieve the most matings), and reflects differential mating success. STDs can therefore have a major influence on the evolution of host mating systems. We studied the epidemiology of a recently described STD of a chrysomelid beetle in applied and theoretical contexts, exploring the virulence, intensity and prevalence of infection, and using our results to test ecological predictions. Chrysophtharta cloelia is infected with a sexually-transmitted mite (the STD), Parobia captivus. Infection rate over three beetle generations (7 months) was determined and the STD’s effects on fertility, fecundity, longevity, mating success and overwintering survival was measured. Throughout the season around 40% of beetles were infected, with approximately one quarter of such hosts carrying infective life stages of the STD at any one time. Infection by P. captivus significantly decreased overwintering survival, but did not impact on other fitness parameters measured, including mate acceptance. However, more female beetles were infected than male beetles, while within both sexes larger beetles were more likely to be infected. Our results concur with theoretical predictions that STDs may be selected for low virulence and low detectability, while the observation of female bias in infection supports hypotheses regarding variable mating success and mating skews, which we discuss
