Time-Resolved Ultrafast Transient Polarization Spectroscopy to Investigate Nonlinear Processes and Dynamics in Electronically Excited Molecules on the Femtosecond Time Scale

    Get PDF
We report a novel experimental technique to investigate ultrafast dynamics in photoexcited molecules by probing the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. A non-colinear 3-pulse scheme is developed to probe the ultrafast dynamics of excited electronic states using the optical Kerr effect by time-resolved polarization spectroscopy. Optical heterodyne and optical homodyne detection are demonstrated to measure the third-order nonlinear optical response for the S1 excited state of liquid nitrobenzene, which is populated by 2-photon absorption of a 780 nm 35 fs excitation pulse.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. Air sand erosion is a widely effecting phenomenon in GCC region, where a solid particle impacting on a wall surface causing catastrophic mechanical damage, the engine compressor operating in a particulate environment are subjected to deterioration of performance and life due to sand ingestion. In current paper we simulate and studied the sand erosion in such transonic compressors were flow rate, particle size and concentration were investigated to study particles distribution and erosion rate along the compressor blade. Result shows that particles concentration has the most significant effect on blade erosion rate where particles size has less effect among all other measured parameters. Surface deformation and roughness is in scope for further investigation

ANN-Based Failure Modeling of T-56 Engine Turbines

The T-56 turboprop engine is one of the most widely used in military transportation aircraft. It operates virtually everywhere, from the arctic circle to the Sahara. Operation in desert conditions, however, presents a challenge for maintenance engineers regarding preventive maintenance scheduling. Erosion caused by sand particles drastically decreases turbine blades life. Recent studies showed that Artificial Neural Network ANN algorithms have much better capability at modeling reliability and predicting failure than conventional algorithms. In this study, more than thirty years of local operational field data were used for failure rate prediction and validation using several algorithms. These include Weibull regression modeling to establish a reference, feed-forward back-propagation ANN, and radial basis neural network algorithm. Comparison between the three methods is carried out. Results show that the failure rate predicted by both the feed-forward back-propagation artificial neural network model and radial basis neural network model are closer to actual failure data than the failure rate predicted by the Weibull model. The results also give an insight into the reliability of the engine turbine under actual operating conditions, which can be used by aircraft operators for assessing system and component failures and customizing the maintenance programs recommended by the manufacturer

Ultrafast Dynamics of Excited Electronic States in Nitrobenzene Measured by Ultrafast Transient Polarization Spectroscopy.

We investigate ultrafast dynamics of the lowest singlet excited electronic state in liquid nitrobenzene using ultrafast transient polarization spectroscopy, extending the well-known technique of optical Kerr effect spectroscopy to excited electronic states. The third-order nonlinear response of the excited molecular ensemble is measured using a pair of femtosecond pulses following a third femtosecond pulse that populates the S1 excited state. By measuring this response, which is highly sensitive to details of the excited state character and structure, as a function of time delays between the three pulses involved, we extract the dephasing time of the wave packet on the excited state. The dephasing time, measured as a function of time delay after pump excitation, shows oscillations indicating oscillatory wave packet dynamics on the excited state. From the experimental measurements and supporting theoretical calculations, we deduce that the wave packet completely leaves the S1 state potential energy surface after three traversals of the intersystem crossing between the singlet S1 and triplet T2 states

Limited Phosphorous Supply Improved Lipid Content of Chlorella vulgaris That Increased Phenol and 2-Chlorophenol Adsorption from Contaminated Water with Acid Treatment

Phenolic compounds are toxic and ominously present in industrial effluents, which can end up in water bodies, causing potential damage to living organisms. This study employed the dried biomass of freshwater green microalgae Chlorella vulgaris to remove phenol and 2-chlorophenol from an aqueous environment. C. vulgaris was grown under different phosphorus- (P) starved conditions, and biomass was treated with sulfuric acid. It was observed that reducing the P level enhanced the lipid content by 7.8 times while decreasing protein by 7.2 times. P-starved C. vulgaris dried biomass removed phenol and 2-chlorophenol by 69 and 57%, respectively, after 180 min from the contaminated water. Acid-treated P-starved C. vulgaris dried biomass removed phenol and 2-chlorophenol by 77 and 75%, respectively, after 180 min. Thus, an economical and eco-friendly P-starved and acid treated C. vulgaris biomass has better potential to remove phenol and 2-chlorophenol from contaminated ground water and industrial wastewater. This research has been funded by Scientific Research Deanship at University of Ha’il—Saudi Arabia through project number RG-21 105
