    Prognostic factors for corneal graft recovery after severe corneal graft rejection following penetrating keratoplasty

    BACKGROUND: To investigate the outcome and prognostic factors for corneal graft recovery after severe corneal graft rejection following penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) treated with topical and systemic steroids. METHODS: Fifty-eight eyes in 58 patients with severe corneal graft rejection following PKP were treated with topical and systemic steroids. Factors affecting the reversibility and maintenance of graft transparency were analyzed. RESULTS: Graft transparency was restored in 37 of 58 eyes (63.8%). Clarity of the graft was maintained in 25 of 37 eyes after transparency was restored, while corneal decompensation developed at a mean of 6.0 ± 4.3 months in the remainder. The interval between rejection and treatment with systemic steroids was shorter in cases that recovered graft transparency (OR, 0.88, 95% CI. 0.80–0.97, P = 0.0093). Corneal decompensation after the recovery of corneal transparency tend to occur in cases of regraft (OR, 0.09, 95% CI. 0.01–0.54, P = 0.0091). CONCLUSIONS: Severe corneal graft rejection after PKP was reversible in approximately two-thirds of the cases, with graft transparency being maintained in two-thirds of them when treated with both topical and systemic steroids. Early treatment confers a benefit in terms of the recovery of graft transparency

    Receptor Function and Response of Semiconductor Gas Sensor

    Theoretical approaches to receptor function and response of semiconductor gas sensor are described, following the illustrations of some relevant key issues such as tunneling transport. Depletion in small semiconductor crystals is characterized by the occurrence of new type depletion (volume depletion) after conventional one (regional depletion), and inclusion of both types makes it possible to formulate the receptor function and response to oxygen (air base), oxidizing gas (nitrogen dioxide), and reducing gas (hydrogen). The equations derived theoretically using physical parameters of the semiconductor side and chemical parameters of the gases side appear to reproduce satisfactorily the sensing behavior to the aforementioned gases as well as the influence of changes in physical parameters such as grain size and donor density. Extension to the semiconductor crystals dispersed with surface electron-traps shows that the traps act as a sensitizer to promote sensor response

    Oxidation of Hydrocarbons on the Surface of Tin Dioxide Chemical Sensors

    The paper presents the results of our investigation on the effect of the molecular structure of organic vapors on the characteristics of resistive chemical gas sensors. The sensors were based on tin dioxide and prepared by means of thick film technology. The electrical and catalytic examinations showed that the abstraction of two hydrogen atoms from the organic molecule and formation of a water in result of reaction with a chemisorbed oxygen ion, determine the rate of oxidation reactions, and thus the sensor performance. The rate of the process depends on the order of carbon atoms and Lewis acidity of the molecule. Therefore, any modification of the surface centers of a sensor material, modifies not only the sensor sensitivity, but also its selectivity

    <原著>一次性外傷性動眼神経麻痺症例の検討

    頭部外傷による一次性動眼神経麻痺症例13例について検討した. 発生頻度は, 過去8. 5年間に入院した頭部外傷症例1052例中13例(1. 2%)であった. 年齢は7歳から83歳(平均32歳)で, 男7例, 女6例であった. 受傷機転は全例交通外傷で, 受傷部位は前頭部8例, 後頭部3例, 側頭部1例で, 1例は不明であった. 入院時の意識レベルは, Glasgow Coma Scale で4点から14点(平均7点)であった. 頭蓋単純写で骨折が3例に認められた. CT では, くも膜下出血が4例, 脳室内出血が2例, 脳挫傷が5例に認められた. MRI は4例に施行され, 3例に脳挫傷が認められた. 予後は6カ月の観察期間で, 完全回復10例, 不完全回復2例, 不変1例であった. 今回検討した症例では, 前後方向の外力により, tentorial gap で動眼神経の損傷をきたした症例が多いと考えられた. 予後は比較的良好であった
