    On the Cut-Off Prescriptions Associated with Power-Law Generalized Thermostatistics

    We revisit the cut-off prescriptions which are needed in order to specify completely the form of Tsallis' maximum entropy distributions. For values of the Tsallis entropic parameter q>1q>1 we advance an alternative cut-off prescription and discuss some of its basic mathematical properties. As an illustration of the new cut-off prescription we consider in some detail the qq-generalized quantum distributions which have recently been shown to reproduce various experimental results related to high TcT_c superconductors

    Particle-gamma coincidences and coplanarity in the 32S+24Mg^{32}S+^{24}Mg binary reaction

    The reaction 32S (165.4 MeV) + 24Mg is studied using the binary reaction spec- trometer (BRS) coupled to the Euroball germanium array. Particle-particle-gamma and particle-gamma-gamma coincidences have been examined. The Z-identification, position and energy information for binary reaction products are shown together with the Doppler-shift corrected gamma-rays emitted from the fragments. Recent reports of evi- dence for hyper-deformation from angular correlations in similar data are also in- vestigated. Analogous out-of-plane angular correlations are observed but attributed to reactions with the target contaminants 16O and 12C

    Inmate Recidivism as a Measure of Private Prison Performance

    The growth of the private corrections industry has elicited interest in the comparative performance of state and private prisons. One way to measure the service quality of private prisons is to examine inmates' postrelease performance. Current empirical evidence is limited to four studies, all conducted in Florida. This analysis replicates and adds to the Florida measures in a different state and enhances previous methods. It uses data for a large cohort of Oklahoma state prison inmates released between 1997 and 2001. Controlling for known covariates, multivariate survival analysis revealed comparative rates of reincarceration for inmates in multiple exposure and comparison groups. These results are unique among prior studies on this topic; private prison inmates had a greater hazard of recidivism in all eight models tested, six of which were statistically significant.     Coplanar ternary decay of hyper-deformed 56^{56}Ni

    Ternary fission events from the decay of 56^{56}Ni compound nuclei, formed in the 32^{32}S + 24^{24}Mg reaction at Elab(32S)E_{lab}(^{32}S) = 163.5 MeV, have been measured in a unique set-up consisting of two large area position sensitive (x,y) gas detector telescopes. Very narrow out-of-plane correlations are observed for two fragments emitted in either purely binary events or in events with a missing mass consisting of 2 and 3 α\alpha-particles. These correlations are interpreted as ternary fission decay from compound nuclei at high angular momenta through an elongated (hyper-deformed) shape with very large moments of inertia, where the lighter mass in the neck region remains at rest

    Coincidences between two heavy fragments have been measured from fission of 56Ni compound nuclei, formed in the 32S + 24Mg reaction at Elab(32S) = 163.5 MeV. A unique experimental set-up consisting of two large area position sensitive (x, y) gas-detector telescopes has been used allowing the complete determination of the observed fragments, and their momentum vectors. The conventional methods often produce agglomerated structures exhibiting lower strength and ductility. To overcome the cohesive force of the agglomerates, a melt conditioned high-pressure die casting (MC-HPDC) process innovatively adapts the well-established, high-shear dispersive mixing action of a twin screw mechanism. The distribution of particles and properties of composites are quantitatively evaluated. The adopted rheo process significantly improved the distribution of the reinforcement in the matrix with a strong interfacial bond between the two. A good combination of improved ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and tensile elongation (e) is obtained compared with composites produced by conventional processes.EPSR

    The theory of regular variation, in its Karamata and Bojani´c-Karamata/de Haan forms, is long established and makes essential use of the Cauchy functional equation. Both forms are subsumed within the recent theory of Beurling regular variation, developed elsewhere. Various generalizations of the Cauchy equation, including the Gołab–Schinzel functional equation (GS) and Goldie's equation (GBE) below, are prominent there. Here we unify their treatment by algebraicization: extensive use of group structures introduced by Popa and Javor in the 1960s turn all the various (known) solutions into homomorphisms, in fact identifying them 'en passant', and show that (GS) is present everywhere, even if in a thick disguise

    Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

    This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

    Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes.
