    Transition Metal Complexes of Sulfonamide Based Schiff Bases: Preparation Characterization and Antibacterial Activity.

    Metal complexes of Cu (II), Co (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) of Schiff based derived from 2-hydroxy-7-methylquinoline-3-carbaldehyde and 2-hydroxy-7-methoxyquinoline-3-carbaldehyde with 3-aminobenzenesulfonamide have been prepared and characterized on the basis of their physical characteristics, micro-analytical data, 1H NMR, FTIR and UV spectrum data. The spectrum data confirmed coordination of Schiff base with metal through imine nitrogen and oxygen atom. While electronic spectrum data confirmed the octahedral geometry of the complexes.  Biological screening effect of Schiff base and their metal complexes have been studied against gram positive and gram negative bacteria by disc diffusion technique. Biological activities show that the complexes exhibit higher antibacterial activity than that of Schiff base against tested bacteria

    Improved salinity tolerance in early growth stage of maize through salicylic acid foliar application

    Soil salinity threatens agricultural production worldwide by constraining plant growth and final crop yield. The early stages are most sensitive to salinity, in response to which salicylic acid (SA) has demonstrated beneficial effects in various plant species. Based on this, a maize (Zea mays L.) pot experiment was set up combining three levels of soil salinity (0, 6 and 12 dS m–1), obtained through NaCl addition, with three levels of SA (0, 300 and 600 mM), applied by leaf spraying 20 days after seedling emergence. Fifteen days later, the following traits were assessed: morphology (plant height, leaf number), growth (root and shoot dry weight), leaf water status [relative water content (RWC), elec-trolyte leakage (EL)], pigments (chlorophyll a and b, carotenoids, anthocyanin), antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, catalase, ascor-bate peroxidase, vitamin C), oxidative stress markers (H2O2, mal-ondialdehyde), osmo-regulating compounds (free amino acids, soluble proteins and sugars, proline), hormones [indole-3-acetic acid, gibberellic acid (GA), abscisic acid (ABA), ethylene], ele-ment (Na, K, Ca, Mg and Cl) concentration and content in roots, stem and leaves. Salinity severely affected maize growth (–26% total dry weight), impaired leaf water status (–31% RWC), reduced photosynthetic pigments, enhanced all antioxidant enzymes and oxidative stress markers, two osmo-regulating compounds (soluble sugars and proline) out of four, and all hormones except GA. SA was shown effective in containing most of the stress effects, while supporting plant defences by upgrading anti-oxidant activities (reduced oxidative stress markers), increasing cell membrane stability (–24% EL) and leaf water status (+20% RWC), and reducing plant stress signalling (–10% ABA and –20% ethylene). Above all, SA contrasted the massive entry of noxious ions (Na+ and Cl–), in favour of K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ accumulation. Lastly, salicylic acid was shown beneficial for maize growth and physiology also under non-saline condition, suggesting a potential use in normal field conditions

    Digital Citizenship And Mental And Physical Well-Being Of Saudi Citizens

    Background: The escalating integration of technology and digital platforms in the lives of individuals raises pertinent concerns regarding its impact on mental and physical well-being. This study aims to explore the association between Digital Citizenship and the well-being of Saudi citizens, considering the multifaceted dimensions of digital behavior and their potential consequences. Method: Employing a cross-sectional descriptive research design, data was collected from a diverse sample of 400 healthcare workers in the Jizan Region, KSA. The Digital Citizenship Scale was utilized to assess online behaviors, while the Short Form 12 (SF-12) Questionnaire gauged mental and physical well-being. Descriptive statistics, Pearson Correlation, t-tests, and ANOVA were employed for data analysis. Results: The findings revealed a significant correlation between various facets of digital citizenship and mental and physical well-being. Responsible digital behaviors, such as online etiquette and security consciousness, correlated positively with enhanced well-being. Conversely, exposure to cyberbullying and security breaches was associated with lower well-being scores. Conclusion: The study underscores the vital role of responsible digital citizenship in shaping the mental and physical well-being of Saudi citizens. Promoting awareness and education regarding digital behaviors can contribute to a healthier online environment. Policymakers, educators, and healthcare professionals are encouraged to collaborate in integrating digital citizenship education and initiatives to safeguard the well-being of individuals in the digital age

    Modeling of Facial Wrinkles for Applications in Computer Vision

    International audienceAnalysis and modeling of aging human faces have been extensively studied in the past decade for applications in computer vision such as age estimation, age progression and face recognition across aging. Most of this research work is based on facial appearance and facial features such as face shape, geometry, location of landmarks and patch-based texture features. Despite the recent availability of higher resolution, high quality facial images, we do not find much work on the image analysis of local facial features such as wrinkles specifically. For the most part, modeling of facial skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles has been a focus in computer graphics research for photo-realistic rendering applications. In computer vision, very few aging related applications focus on such facial features. Where several survey papers can be found on facial aging analysis in computer vision, this chapter focuses specifically on the analysis of facial wrinkles in the context of several applications. Facial wrinkles can be categorized as subtle discontinuities or cracks in surrounding inhomogeneous skin texture and pose challenges to being detected/localized in images. First, we review commonly used image features to capture the intensity gradients caused by facial wrinkles and then present research in modeling and analysis of facial wrinkles as aging texture or curvilinear objects for different applications. The reviewed applications include localization or detection of wrinkles in facial images , incorporation of wrinkles for more realistic age progression, analysis for age estimation and inpainting/removal of wrinkles for facial retouching

    Modulation of Sn concentration in ZnO nanorod array: intensification on the conductivity and humidity sensing properties

    Tin (Sn)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod arrays (TZO) were synthesized onto aluminum-doped ZnO-coated glass substrate via a facile sonicated sol–gel immersion method for humidity sensor applications. These nanorod arrays were grown at different Sn concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 3 at.%. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the deposited TZO arrays exhibited a wurtzite structure. The stress/strain condition of the ZnO film metamorphosed from tensile strain/compressive stress to compressive strain/tensile stress when the Sn concentrations increased. Results indicated that 1 at.% Sn doping of TZO, which has the lowest tensile stress of 0.14 GPa, generated the highest conductivity of 1.31 S cm− 1. In addition, 1 at.% Sn doping of TZO possessed superior sensitivity to a humidity of 3.36. These results revealed that the optimum performance of a humidity-sensing device can be obtained mainly by controlling the amount of extrinsic element in a ZnO film

    Alcohol and marijuana use while driving-an unexpected crash risk in Pakistani commercial drivers: a cross-sectional survey

    Background:A significant proportion of road traffic crashes are attributable to alcohol and marijuana use while driving globally. Sale and use of both substances is illegal in Pakistan and is not considered a threat for road traffic injuries. However literature hints that this may not be the case. We did this study to assess usage of alcohol and marijuana in Pakistani commercial drivers.Methods:A sample of 857 commercial bus and truck drivers was interviewed in October 2008 at the largest commercial vehicle station in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan. Time location cluster sampling was used to select the subjects and a structured questionnaire was used to assess the basic demographic profile, substance abuse habits of the drivers while on the road, and reasons for usage of illicit substances while driving were recorded. Self reported information was collected after obtaining informed consent. Chi square and fisher exact tests were used to assess differences between groups and logistic regression was used to identify significant associations between driver characteristics and alcohol and marijuana use.Results:Almost 10% of truck drivers use alcohol while driving on Pakistani roads. Marijuana use is almost 30% in some groups. Statistically different patterns of usage are seen between population subgroups based on age, ethnicity, education, and marital status. Regression analysis shows association of alcohol and marijuana use with road rage and error behaviours, and also with an increased risk of being involved in road crashes. The reported reasons for using alcohol or marijuana show a general lack of awareness of the hazardous nature of this practice among the commercial driver population.Conclusion:Alcohol and marijuana use is highly prevalent in Pakistani commercial drivers. The issue needs to be recognized by concerned authorities and methods such as random breath tests and sobriety check points need to be employed for proper law enforcement

    Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13  TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV
