    We consider theoretically a current flowing perpendicular to interfaces of a spin-valve type ferromagnetic metallic junction. For the first time an effective approach is investigated to calculate a simultaneous action of the two current effects, namely, the nonequilibrium longitudinal spin injection and the transversal spin-transfer surface torque. Dispersion relation for fluctuations is derived and solved. Nonlinear problem is solved about steady state arising due to instability for a thick enough free layer.Comment: 9 page

    Large Scale Rapidity Correlations in Heavy Ion Collisions

    We discuss particle production mechanisms for heavy ion collisions. We present an argument demonstrating how the fluctuations of the number of produced particles in a series of classical emissions can account for KNO scaling. We predict rapidity correlations in the particle production in the event by event analysis of heavy ion collisions on the rapidity scales of the order of one over the strong coupling constant.Comment: REVTeX, 13 pages, 3 figure

    Hermitian K-theory and 2-regularity for totally real number fields

    We completely determine the 2-primary torsion subgroups of the hermitian K-groups of rings of 2-integers in totally real 2-regular number fields. The result is almost periodic with period 8. We also identify the homotopy fibers of the forgetful and hyperbolic maps relating hermitian and algebraic K-theory. The result is then exactly periodic of period 8. In both the orthogonal and symplectic cases, we prove the 2-primary hermitian Quillen-Lichtenbaum conjecture.Comment: To appear in Mathematische Annale

    Experimental and Theoretical Challenges in the Search for the Quark Gluon Plasma: The STAR Collaboration's Critical Assessment of the Evidence from RHIC Collisions

    We review the most important experimental results from the first three years of nucleus-nucleus collision studies at RHIC, with emphasis on results from the STAR experiment, and we assess their interpretation and comparison to theory. The theory-experiment comparison suggests that central Au+Au collisions at RHIC produce dense, rapidly thermalizing matter characterized by: (1) initial energy densities above the critical values predicted by lattice QCD for establishment of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP); (2) nearly ideal fluid flow, marked by constituent interactions of very short mean free path, established most probably at a stage preceding hadron formation; and (3) opacity to jets. Many of the observations are consistent with models incorporating QGP formation in the early collision stages, and have not found ready explanation in a hadronic framework. However, the measurements themselves do not yet establish unequivocal evidence for a transition to this new form of matter. The theoretical treatment of the collision evolution, despite impressive successes, invokes a suite of distinct models, degrees of freedom and assumptions of as yet unknown quantitative consequence. We pose a set of important open questions, and suggest additional measurements, at least some of which should be addressed in order to establish a compelling basis to conclude definitively that thermalized, deconfined quark-gluon matter has been produced at RHIC.Comment: 101 pages, 37 figures; revised version to Nucl.     Formation of dense partonic matter in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC: Experimental evaluation by the PHENIX collaboration

    Extensive experimental data from high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions were recorded using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The comprehensive set of measurements from the first three years of RHIC operation includes charged particle multiplicities, transverse energy, yield ratios and spectra of identified hadrons in a wide range of transverse momenta (p_T), elliptic flow, two-particle correlations, non-statistical fluctuations, and suppression of particle production at high p_T. The results are examined with an emphasis on implications for the formation of a new state of dense matter. We find that the state of matter created at RHIC cannot be described in terms of ordinary color neutral hadrons.Comment: 510 authors, 127 pages text, 56 figures, 1 tables, LaTeX.     Verification and validation of integrated simulation of energetic particles in fusion plasmas

    This paper reports verification and validation of linear simulations of Alfvén eigenmodes in the current ramp phase of DIII-D L-mode discharge #159243 using gyrokinetic, gyrokinetic-MHD hybrid, and eigenvalue codes. Using a classical fast ion profile, all simulation codes find that reversed shear Alfvén eigenmodes (RSAE) are the dominant instability. The real frequencies from all codes have a coefficient of variation of less than 5% for the most unstable modes with toroidal mode number n  =  4 and 5. The simulated RSAE frequencies agree with experimental measurements if the minimum safety factor is adjusted, within experimental errors. The simulated growth rates exhibit greater variation, and simulations find that pressure gradients of thermal plasmas make a significant contribution to the growth rates. Mode structures of the dominant modes agree well among all codes. Moreover, using a calculated fast ion profile that takes into account the diffusion by multiple unstable modes, a toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) with n  =  6 is found to be unstable in the outer edge, consistent with the experimental observations. Variations of the real frequencies and growth rates of the TAE are slightly larger than those of the RSAE. Finally, electron temperature fluctuations and radial phase shifts from simulations show no significant differences with the experimental data for the strong n  =  4 RSAE, but significant differences for the weak n  =  6 TAE. The verification and validation for the linear Alfvén eigenmodes is the first step to develop an integrated simulation of energetic particles confinement in burning plasmas incorporating multiple physical processes

    A Historiometric Examination of Machiavellianism and a New Taxonomy of Leadership

    Although researchers have extensively examined the relationship between charismatic leadership and Machiavellianism (Deluga, 2001; Gardner & Avolio, 1995; House & Howell, 1992), there has been a lack of investigation of Machiavellianism in relation to alternative forms of outstanding leadership. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the relationship between Machiavellianism and a new taxonomy of outstanding leadership comprised of charismatic, ideological, and pragmatic leaders. Using an historiometric approach, raters assessed Machiavellianism via the communications of 120 outstanding leaders in organizations across the domains of business, political, military, and religious institutions. Academic biographies were used to assess twelve general performance measures as well as twelve general controls and five communication specific controls. The results indicated that differing levels of Machiavellianism is evidenced across the differing leader types as well as differing leader orientation. Additionally, Machiavellianism appears negatively related to performance, though less so when type and orientation are taken into account.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
