    O papel dos espaços inativos na reabilitação urbana : projeto em Xabregas.

    Dissertação apresentada na Universidade de Lisboa -Faculdade de Arquitetura, para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Arquitetura com a especialização em Urbanismo.O contexto socioeconómico atual, aliado a uma nova lógica administrativa, vai colocar novos desafios ao nível do planeamento e gestão territorial. Contudo, quando os recursos disponíveis são relativamente escassos, torna-se necessário desenvolver novas parcerias institucionais e promover a capacitação de novos atores na conceção e implementação de projetos urbanos. Pretende-se, pois, potenciar o trabalho já desenvolvido pelo Município, ao nível do planeamento e gestão do território, integrando-o em rede com outras iniciativas existentes. Xabregas, na zona oriental de Lisboa, é um território esquecido onde, depois de várias décadas de desindustrialização e suburbanização, proliferam espaços inativos que podem ter um papel determinante na revitalização do lugar. Na proposta de uma Área de Reabilitação Urbana Sistemática, a intervenção tem como principais objetivos a preservação do património construído e a atração de novos usos que possam vivificar o sítio de Xabregas. É no sentido de revitalizar os espaços inativos que surge a proposta de espaços de trabalho no recinto da antiga Fábrica da Samaritana. O espaço requalificado deve fortalecer a economia local, não só na manutenção do tecido empresarial existente, mas também na atração de novas atividades criadoras de emprego. Por esse motivo, e num contexto de maior incerteza, os espaços concebidos são facilmente apropriáveis em diferentes formas de trabalho. Essa constante mutação tem marcado a evolução dos espaços de escritório a nível mundial. Mas só com um desenho atento às especificidades do lugar, é possível integrar os novos espaços de trabalho numa paisagem já sedimentada. A reabilitação do recinto desportivo e o conjunto proposto de residências assistidas são duas outras propostas que podem aumentar a coesão social e territorial. No entanto, outros desafios persistem no sítio de Xabregas, como a fraca articulação entre os espaços infraestruturais, a topografia limitante e a heterogeneidade da malha urbana.ABSTRACT: The current socio-economic situation imposes administrative constraints, thus decreasisng state interventionism. Therefore, the new governance challenges city planning methods. When resources are limited, the call of different stakeholders can be vital to get plans and projects off the ground. Furthermore, the cooperation between different actors can enable the participation of the local communities. This project aims to strengthen the initiatives developed by the local authorities. In Xabregas, Lisbon, several industrial cycles and suburbanization lead to the proliferation of vacant spaces. These spaces can be an asset to regenerate the area. The creation of Systematic Urban Rehabilitation Area (ARU Sistemática) is a stimulus for the urban renewal. The main goals in this proposal are the preservation of the built heritage, as well as the attraction of different activities to the site of Xabregas. In order to archieve the main goals, this project proposes different workspaces in the former Fábrica da Samaritana. This brownfield site can prosper if local business thrive and new business create jobs. However, as of in times of incertainty, the new workspaces must be flexible enough to attract different activities. These ever-changing spaces have became increasingly common among office spaces around the world. Yet only a conscious design can ensure a successful integration of new worksspaces in a complex urban fabric. The rehabilitation of the local sports club and the construcion of assisted living apartments are key projects that increase social and spatial cohesion. However some site-specific challenges persist, such as the isolative topography, the lack of connection among the infrastructural spaces or the heterogeneous built environment

    High frequency of WNT-activated medulloblastomas with CTNNB1 wild type suggests a higher proportion of hereditary cases in a Latin-Iberian population

    PurposeMedulloblastomas are the most common primary malignant brain tumors in children. They are divided into molecular subgroups: WNT-activated, SHH-Activated, TP53 mutant or wild type, and non-WNT/non-SHH (Groups 3 and 4). WNT-activated medulloblastomas are usually caused by mutations in the CTNNB1 gene (85%–90%), and most remaining cases of CTNNB1 wild type are thought to be caused by germline mutations in APC. So far, the frequencies of CTNNB1 have been reported mainly in North American and European populations. The aim of this study was to report the frequency of CTNNB1 mutations in WNT-activated medulloblastomas in a Latin-Iberian population and correlate with their clinicopathological characteristics.MethodsA total of 266 medulloblastomas from seven different institutions from Brazil (n=211), Portugal (n=38), and Argentina (n=17) were evaluated. Following RNA and DNA isolation from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumor tissues, the molecular classification and CTNNB1 mutation analysis were performed by nCounter and Sanger sequencing, respectively.ResultsWNT-activated medulloblastomas accounted for 15% (40/266) of the series. We observed that 73% of WNT-activated medulloblastomas harbored CTNNB1 mutations. CTNNB1 wild-type cases (27%) were more prevalent in female individuals and suggested to be associated with a worse outcome. Among the CTNNB1 wild-type cases, the available analysis of family history revealed two cases with familiar adenomatous polyposis, harboring APC germline variants.ConclusionWe observed a lower incidence of CTNNB1 mutations in WNT-activated medulloblastomas in our Latin-Iberian cohort compared to frequencies previously described in other populations. Considering that CTNNB1 wild-type cases may exhibit APC germline mutations, our study suggests a higher incidence (~30%) of hereditary WNT-activated medulloblastomas in the Latin-Iberian population

    Assessing the impact of COVID-19 on liver cancer management (CERO-19).

    BACKGROUND & AIMS: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges to healthcare systems and it may have heavily impacted patients with liver cancer (LC). Herein, we evaluated whether the schedule of LC screening or procedures has been interrupted or delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: An international survey evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on clinical practice and clinical trials from March 2020 to June 2020, as the first phase of a multicentre, international, and observational project. The focus was on patients with hepatocellular carcinoma or intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, cared for around the world during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave. RESULTS: Ninety-one centres expressed interest to participate and 76 were included in the analysis, from Europe, South America, North America, Asia, and Africa (73.7%, 17.1%, 5.3%, 2.6%, and 1.3% per continent, respectively). Eighty-seven percent of the centres modified their clinical practice: 40.8% the diagnostic procedures, 80.9% the screening programme, 50% cancelled curative and/or palliative treatments for LC, and 41.7% modified the liver transplantation programme. Forty-five out of 69 (65.2%) centres in which clinical trials were running modified their treatments in that setting, but 58.1% were able to recruit new patients. The phone call service was modified in 51.4% of centres which had this service before the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 19/37). CONCLUSIONS: The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had a tremendous impact on the routine care of patients with liver cancer. Modifications in screening, diagnostic, and treatment algorithms may have significantly impaired the outcome of patients. Ongoing data collection and future analyses will report the benefits and disadvantages of the strategies implemented, aiding future decision-making.     Impacts of the Tropical Pacific/Indian Oceans on the Seasonal Cycle of the West African Monsoon

    The current consensus is that drought has developed in the Sahel during the second half of the twentieth century as a result of remote effects of oceanic anomalies amplified by local land–atmosphere interactions. This paper focuses on the impacts of oceanic anomalies upon West African climate and specifically aims to identify those from SST anomalies in the Pacific/Indian Oceans during spring and summer seasons, when they were significant. Idealized sensitivity experiments are performed with four atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs). The prescribed SST patterns used in the AGCMs are based on the leading mode of covariability between SST anomalies over the Pacific/Indian Oceans and summer rainfall over West Africa. The results show that such oceanic anomalies in the Pacific/Indian Ocean lead to a northward shift of an anomalous dry belt from the Gulf of Guinea to the Sahel as the season advances. In the Sahel, the magnitude of rainfall anomalies is comparable to that obtained by other authors using SST anomalies confined to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. The mechanism connecting the Pacific/Indian SST anomalies with West African rainfall has a strong seasonal cycle. In spring (May and June), anomalous subsidence develops over both the Maritime Continent and the equatorial Atlantic in response to the enhanced equatorial heating. Precipitation increases over continental West Africa in association with stronger zonal convergence of moisture. In addition, precipitation decreases over the Gulf of Guinea. During the monsoon peak (July and August), the SST anomalies move westward over the equatorial Pacific and the two regions where subsidence occurred earlier in the seasons merge over West Africa. The monsoon weakens and rainfall decreases over the Sahel, especially in August.Peer reviewe

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.     Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis
