Boolean networks synchronism sensitivity and XOR circulant networks convergence time
In this paper are presented first results of a theoretical study on the role
of non-monotone interactions in Boolean automata networks. We propose to
analyse the contribution of non-monotony to the diversity and complexity in
their dynamical behaviours according to two axes. The first one consists in
supporting the idea that non-monotony has a peculiar influence on the
sensitivity to synchronism of such networks. It leads us to the second axis
that presents preliminary results and builds an understanding of the dynamical
behaviours, in particular concerning convergence times, of specific

Driving performance impairments due to hypovigilance on monotonous roads
Drivers' ability to react to unpredictable events deteriorates when exposed to highly predictable and uneventful driving tasks. Highway design reduces the driving task mainly to a lane-keeping manoeuvre. Such a task is monotonous, providing little stimulation and this contributes to crashes due to inattention. Research has shown that driver's hypovigilance can be assessed with EEG measurements and that driving performance is impaired during prolonged monotonous driving tasks. This paper aims to show that two dimensions of monotony - namely road design and road side variability - decrease vigilance and impair driving performance. This is the first study correlating hypovigilance and driver performance in varied monotonous conditions, particularly on a short time scale (a few seconds). We induced vigilance decrement as assessed with an EEG during a monotonous driving simulator experiment. Road monotony was varied through both road design and road side variability. The driver's decrease in vigilance occurred due to both road design and road scenery monotony and almost independently of the driver's sensation seeking level. Such impairment was also correlated to observable measurements from the driver, the car and the environment. During periods of hypovigilance, the driving performance impairment affected lane positioning, time to lane crossing, blink frequency, heart rate variability and non-specific electrodermal response rates. Bestial boredom: a biological perspective on animal boredom and suggestions for its scientific investigation
Boredom is likely to have adaptive value in motivating exploration and learning, and many animals may possess the basic neurological mechanisms to support it. Chronic inescapable boredom can be extremely aversive, and understimulation can harm neural, cognitive and behavioural flexibility. Wild and domesticated animals are at particular risk in captivity, which is often spatially and temporally monotonous. Yet biological research into boredom has barely begun, despite having important implications for animal welfare, the evolution of motivation and cognition, and for human dysfunction at individual and societal levels. Here I aim to facilitate hypotheses about how monotony affects behaviour and physiology, so that boredom can be objectively studied by ethologists and other scientists. I cover valence (pleasantness) and arousal (wakefulness) qualities of boredom, because both can be measured, and I suggest boredom includes suboptimal arousal and aversion to monotony. Because the suboptimal arousal during boredom is aversive, individuals will resist low arousal. Thus, behavioural indicators of boredom will, seemingly paradoxically, include signs of increasing drowsiness, alongside bouts of restlessness, avoidance and sensation-seeking behaviour. Valence and arousal are not, however, sufficient to fully describe boredom. For example, human boredom is further characterized by a perception that time ‘drags’, and this effect of monotony on time perception can too be behaviourally assayed in animals. Sleep disruption and some abnormal behaviour may also be caused by boredom. Ethological research into this emotional phenomenon will deepen understanding of its causes, development, function and evolution, and will enable evidence-based interventions to mitigate human and animal boredom
Engaging prisoners in education: Reducing risk and recidivism
Engaging prisoners in education is one of a range of measures that could alleviate security risk in prisons. For prisoners, one of the main challenges with incarceration is monotony, often leading to frustration, raising the risk of injury for staff and other prisoners. This article suggests that prisoner engagement in education may help to alleviate security risk in prisons through relieving monotony and reducing re-offending by promoting critical thinking skills. It discusses some of the challenges to accessing higher levels of education in prisons and argues that if education was considered for its risk-reducing potential and measured accordingly, then some of those challenges could be reduced. It concludes with a discussion of projects undertaken in Australia and the UK that introduce digital technologies into prisons to allow greater access to the self-paced higher levels of education which could help realize the benefits of reduced risk and decreased recidivism rates

Monotony in Service Orchestrations
Web Service orchestrations are compositions of different Web Services to form
a new service. The services called during the orchestration guarantee a given
performance to the orchestrater, usually in the form of contracts. These
contracts can be used by the orchestrater to deduce the contract it can offer
to its own clients, by performing contract composition. An implicit assumption
in contract based QoS management is: "the better the component services
perform, the better the orchestration's performance will be". Thus, contract
based QoS management for Web services orchestrations implicitly assumes
monotony. In some orchestrations, however, monotony can be violated, i.e., the
performance of the orchestration improves when the performance of a component
service degrades. This is highly undesirable since it can render the process of
contract composition inconsistent. In this paper we define monotony for
orchestrations modelled by Colored Occurrence Nets (CO-nets) and we
characterize the classes of monotonic orchestrations. We show that few
orchestrations are indeed monotonic, mostly since latency can be traded for
quality of data. We also propose a sound refinement of monotony, called
conditional monotony, which forbids this kind of cheating and show that
conditional monotony is widely satisfied by orchestrations. This finding leads
