AdS7_7/CFT6_6 with orientifolds

AdS$_7$ solutions of massive type IIA have been classified, and are dual to a large class of six-dimensional $(1,0)$ SCFT's whose tensor branch deformations are described by linear quivers of SU groups. Quivers and AdS vacua depend solely on the group theory data of the NS5-D6-D8 brane configurations engineering the field theories. This has allowed for a direct holographic match of their $a$ conformal anomaly. In this paper we extend the match to cases where O6 and O8-planes are present, thereby introducing SO and USp groups in the quivers. In all of them we show that the $a$ anomaly computed in supergravity agrees with the holographic limit of the exact field theory result, which we extract from the anomaly polynomial. As a byproduct we construct special AdS$_7$ vacua dual to nonperturbative F-theory configurations. N=1\mathcal{N} = 1 superconformal theories with DND_N blocks

We study the chiral ring of four-dimensional superconformal field theories obtained by wrapping M5-branes on a complex curve inside a Calabi-Yau three-fold. We propose a field theoretic construction of all the theories found by Bah, Beem, Bobev and Wecht by introducing new building blocks, and prove several $\mathcal{N} = 1$ dualities featuring the latter. We match the central charges with those computed from the M5-brane anomaly polynomial, perform the counting of relevant operators and analyze unitarity bound violations. As a byproduct, we compute the exact dimension of "heavy operators" obtained by wrapping an M2-brane on the complex curve.Comment: 45 pages, 17 figures; v2: typos fixed, minor changes, references added, conclusions added, version published in Phys. A Gauss--Newton iteration for Total Least Squares problems

The Total Least Squares solution of an overdetermined, approximate linear equation $Ax \approx b$ minimizes a nonlinear function which characterizes the backward error. We show that a globally convergent variant of the Gauss--Newton iteration can be tailored to compute that solution. At each iteration, the proposed method requires the solution of an ordinary least squares problem where the matrix $A$ is perturbed by a rank-one term.Comment: 14 pages, no figure

All AdS_7 solutions of type II supergravity

In M-theory, the only AdS_7 supersymmetric solutions are AdS_7 x S^4 and its orbifolds. In this paper, we find and classify new supersymmetric solutions of the type AdS_7 x M_3 in type II supergravity. While in IIB none exist, in IIA with Romans mass (which does not lift to M-theory) there are many new ones. We use a pure spinor approach reminiscent of generalized complex geometry. Without the need for any Ansatz, the system determines uniquely the form of the metric and fluxes, up to solving a system of ODEs. Namely, the metric on M_3 is that of an S^2 fibered over an interval; this is consistent with the Sp(1) R-symmetry of the holographically dual (1,0) theory. By including D8 brane sources, one can numerically obtain regular solutions, where topologically M_3 = S^3.Comment: 45 pages, 4 figures. v2: solution with single D8 added; references added; minor correction

Supersymmetric AdS_5 solutions of massive IIA supergravity

Motivated by a recently found class of AdS_7 solutions, we classify AdS_5 solutions in massive IIA, finding infinitely many new analytical examples. We reduce the general problem to a set of PDEs, determining the local internal metric, which is a fibration over a surface. Under a certain simplifying assumption, we are then able to analytically solve the PDEs and give a complete list of all solutions. Among these, one class is new and regular. These spaces can be related to the AdS_7 solutions via a simple universal map for the metric, dilaton and fluxes. The natural interpretation of this map is that the dual CFT_6 and CFT_4 are related by twisted compactification on a Riemann surface $\Sigma_g$. The ratio of their free energy coefficients is proportional to the Euler characteristic of $\Sigma_g$. As a byproduct, we also find the analytic expression for the AdS_7 solutions, which were previously known only numerically. Relazione sull'esperienza di tirocinio formativo svolto presso l'Associazione "Casa della Donna""

Il lavoro che presento in questa sede è prevalentemente il frutto di mie esperienze e riflessioni a riguardo di una tematica vastissima e complessa, che è quella della violenza nei confronti delle donne. L'elaborato è costituito da tre parti principali. Nel primo capitolo, espongo quello che è stato il mio lavoro nel quadro del tirocinio formativo svolto presso il Centro antiviolenza dell'Associazione “Casa della Donna” di Pisa, un'esperienza che ritengo esser stata molto soddisfacente, intensa e significativa per mettere in pratica quanto imparato, fino a quel momento, solamente a livello teorico. Presenterò, dunque, l'Associazione nei suoi diversi aspetti, delineandone gli obiettivi e le finalità, i servizi offerti alla cittadinanza e la fitta rete di relazioni in cui essa è inserita, a livello locale, nazionale ed europeo, in linea con quanto auspicato anche nella Convenzione di Istanbul del Maggio 2011 per far “fronte comune” nella lotta alla violenza nei confronti delle donne. Farò, poi, un breve resoconto dei principali gruppi di lavoro cui io stessa ho preso parte, ossia quello della Biblioteca, il corso di alfabetizzazione “Imparare l'italiano” ed il servizio al “Telefono Donna”, dove ho svolto l'importante e delicato ruolo di operatrice telefonica d'accoglienza. Nel secondo capitolo concentrerò l'attenzione su uno dei fenomeni di cui sono venuta maggiormente a conoscenza: lo stalking. Quel che mi propongo è di fare un minimo di chiarezza a proposito di tale forma di violenza, presentandone la definizione e cercando di farne un esame “multidisciplinare”, che prenda cioè in considerazione tanto gli aspetti giuridici-procedurali quanto quelli più strettamente psicologici, sia dal punto di vista della vittima che del persecutore. Farò riferimento al quadro dell'importante evoluzione normativa in tale materia, nonché a quelli che sono gli elementi caratteristici e necessari per poter parlare effettivamente di reato, per arrivare fino alla delineazione, di recente, di una nuova “sottocategoria” di tale fenomeno, ossia quella di Cyberstalking. Concluderò, infine, nel terzo capitolo con una riflessione scaturita sempre da quanto appreso ed interiorizzato durante questi diversi momenti di formazione, in cui ho avuto modo di constatare direttamente l'importanza dell'ascolto, soprattutto quando esso è condotto in modo attivo, partecipe ed empatico: esso è in grado di far sentire l'interlocutore, che ti si rivolge in cerca di supporto, realmente accolto e libero di esprimersi, di raccontarsi senza paura di giudizi. Farò dunque un approfondimento su quello che è un costrutto fondamentale in tale quadro, ossia quello di empatia, e presenterò delle "strategie", competenze ed abilità cui ricorrere per affinare e potenziare la propria capacità tanto di ascolto quanto di comunicazione con l'altro. Proprio su questo piano si colloca l'intervento dell'operatrice telefonica: si tratta di una figura dalle competenze molteplici e necessariamente multidisciplinari, che deve per esempio conoscere quelli che sono, in primis, i diritti della donna, ma anche gli strumenti cautelari e le misure di protezione di sé su cui essa può contare, nonché saper discriminare i casi in cui si configurino effettivamente gli estremi di un dato reato

Promoting students’ multiliteracy, multimodal, and global citizenship skills in the second language classroom through designing a digital city tour on izi.TRAVEL

There is now wide recognition that for language students to be able to communicate in today’s globalised world, they need to be engaged in a variety of multiliteracy and multimodal practices that transform them in creators of meaning. Digital storytelling is one of such practices. It combines the power of narration with that of technology and allows students to expand their language and digital literacy skills while also helping them develop their own voices. In our study, two groups of elementary and intermediate university students of Italian as a second language were involved in a two-part project aimed at the composition of a digital story on the city of Venice. In the first part, students participated in both classroom and museum activities, which encouraged them to practice their skills in Italian as well as to learn about the Venetian cultural heritage. In the second part, students were guided to craft their own digital tours of the city of Venice using the izi.TRAVEL platform. The multimodal analysis of the two tours shows that creating digital stories based on students’ understanding and interpretation of cultural heritage promoted both their narration and mediation skills in the second language and their role as global citizens

The overt aim of this collection has been to provide a preliminary account of Eleanor Roosevelt’s multifaceted attempts to reshape the image of the United States abroad, her foreign entanglements, and, in particular, her formal and informal interactions with Europe. In dealing with such an ambitious goal, all the contributors have pointed out that one of Mrs. Roosevelt's main (public) diplomacy efforts was to translate the old demands of a certain American liberalism – i.e. internationalism, ..
