    Social prostitution in the guise of romance : the representation of women's lack of economic and social rights in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility

    This study tries to show how Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility is an actual representation of women's social situation at the beginning of the nineteenth Century in England. Austen's criticism is covered by the two sisters' romances and therefore it may be challenging to identify it. Even though Austen does not tell us explicitly what the problem was she clearly presents it without naming it, pointing out the consequences emerged by that problem. Austen's novel reports the stark and unjust reality that the corrupt society of her time imposed to women and shows how this problem with no name dragged women into a situation similar to prostitution.Aquest treball intenta mostrar com la novel·la de Jane Austen Sense and Sensibility és en realitat una representació fidedigna de la situació social de la dona en l'Anglaterra de principis del segle XIX. Austen camufla aquesta crítica social mitjançant les històries d'amor de les dues germanes, la qual cosa la fa de difícil identificació. Austen no ens diu explícitament quin era el problema que la dona patia però ens el presenta clarament sense nomenar-ho assenyalant les conseqüències que d'ell es deriven. La seva novel·la reporta la dura i injusta realitat que la societat corrupta del seu temps imposava a la dona i mostra com aquest problema sense nom arrossegava a la dona a una situació similar a la prostitució

    Nano-TiO2 phototoxicity in fresh and seawater: Daphnia magna and Artemia sp. as proxies

    Nowadays, the industry is quite commonly using nanoparticles of titanium dioxide (nTiO2)especially in sunscreens, due to its higher reflective index in comparison to micron size TiO2. It shigh demand causes its widespread environmental occurrence, thus damaging the environment.The aquatic ecosystems are the most vulnerable to contamination by nTiO2. Like other engineered nanoparticles, nTiO2has demonstrated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive halogen species (RHS) in the aquatic environment under UV radiation. This study investigated the toxicity of nTiO2towards two aquatic indicator organisms, one from freshwater (Daphnia magna) andthe other from seawater (Artemiasp.), under simulated solar radiation (SSR).Daphnia magna and Artemiasp. were co-exposed in 16 h SSR and 8 h darkness cycles to different concentrations of nTiO2.The estimated EC50 at 48 h forD. magna was 3.16 mg nTiO2/L, whereas for A. sp. no toxic effectswere observed. When we exposed these two organisms simultaneously to 48 h of prolonged SSRusing higher nTiO2 concentrations, EC50 values of 7.60 mg/L and 5.59 mg/L nTiO2forD. magna and A. sp., respectively, were obtained. A complementary bioassay was carried out withA. sp., byexposing this organism to a mixture of nTiO2and organic UV filters (benzophenone 3 (oxybenzone,BP3), octocrylene (OC), and ethyl 4-aminobenzoate (EtPABA)), and then exposed to SSR. The results suggested that nTiO2could potentially have negative impacts on these organisms, also this workoutlines the different characteristics and interactions that may contribute to the mechanisms of environmental (in salted and freshwater) phototoxicity of nTiO2and UV radiation, besides their interaction with organic compounds

    Update on systemic treatment in early triple negative breast cancer

    Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a heterogeneous disease representing about 15% of all breast cancers. TNBC are usually high-grade histological tumors, and are generally more aggressive and difficult to treat due to the lack of targeted therapies available, and chemotherapy remains the standard treatment. There is a close relationship between pathological complete response after chemotherapy treatment and higher rates of disease-free survival and overall survival.     Nivel de conocimiento sobre el ácido fólico en estudiantes de la Licenciatura en Enfermería de una Universidad Pública en Querétaro, México

    Introducción: La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y diferentes organizaciones gubernamentales en distintos países recomiendan la suplementación con 0.4 mg de ácido fólico al día a todas las mujeres en edad fértil para prevenir los Defectos del Tubo Neural (DTN), se calcula que, si todas las mujeres en edad fértil consumieran diariamente 400 µg de ácido fólico, se podrían prevenir hasta el 75% del total de casos de los DTN. Objetivo: evaluar el nivel de conocimiento sobre el ácido fólico en los estudiantes de la Licenciatura en Enfermería de una Universidad Pública en Querétaro, México. Metodología: estudio observacional descriptivo transversal. La población de estudio fueron estudiantes de la Licenciatura en Enfermería. Se utilizó la fórmula para poblaciones finitas, un muestreo estratificado proporcional y un muestreo aleatorio simple. Para la recolección de datos se utilizó un cuestionario diseñado por Saxena y colaboradores, el cual no ha sido validado por expertos. Los datos se analizaron con el programa IBM SPSS versión 23. Resultados principales: de 93 estudiantes, 97.8% conocía el ácido fólico, 89.2% conocía que la deficiencia del ácido fólico es el principal factor para que se presenten los DTN, 63.4% señaló que el ácido fólico debe de ingerirse en el periodo periconcepcional, pero sólo 17.2% reconoció qué grupo en particular debe de ingerirlo, similar al 18.3% que seleccionó la dosis correcta. En general, el conocimiento de los estudiantes resultó ser bajo. Conclusión general: Dadas las cifras de prevalencia de DTN y anemia megaloblástica, se sugiere aumentar la instrucción en materia de la suplementación con ácido fólico

    Multicenter prospective clinical study to evaluate children short-term neurodevelopmental outcome in congenital heart disease (children NEURO-HEART): study protocol

While advances in early diagnosis and postnatal management have increased survival in CHD children, worrying long-term outcomes, particularly neurodevelopmental disability, have emerged as a key prognostic factor in the counseling of these pregnancies. Methods: Eligible participants are women presenting at 20 to < 37 weeks of gestation carrying a fetus with CHD. Maternal/neonatal recordings are performed at regular intervals, from the fetal period to 24 months of age, and include: placental and fetal hemodynamics, fetal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional echocardiography, cerebral oxymetry, electroencephalography and serum neurological and cardiac biomarkers. Neurodevelopmental assessment is planned at 12 months of age using the ages and stages questionnaire (ASQ) and at 24months of age with the Bayley-III test. Target recruitment is at least 150 cases classified in three groups according to three main severe CHD groups: transposition of great arteries (TGA), Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction (LVOTO). Discussion: The results of NEURO-HEART study will provide themost comprehensive knowledge until date of children’s neurologic prognosis in CHD and will have the potential for developing future clinical decisive tools and improving preventive strategies in CHD.RETICS funded by the PN 2018-2021 (Spain), ISCIII- Sub-Directorate General for Research Assessment and Promotion and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), reference RD16/002

    DESARROLLO MULTIDISCIPLINARIO EN INVESTIGACIÓN Y DOCENCIA DEL CENTRO UNIVERSITARIO UAEM VALLE DE MÉXICOLa Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México ha evolucionado a través de sus 188 años de historia, dedicada a la educación, la investigación, la cultura y el deporte, como sus grandes ejes rectores, formadora de hombres y mujeres con un alto sentido humanista y ético, contribuyendo a lograr nuevas y mejores formas de existencia y convivencia social. Durante el proceso de desconcentración de la UAEM, se crearon las Unidades Académicas y Centros Universitarios para brindar el servicio de educación a más jóvenes en todo el Estado de México, este Centro Universitario fue uno de los primeros y a sus veinte años de existencia se está consolidando como uno de los mejores. Es en los últimos años que se ha venido impulsando la investigación al contar con cuerpos académicos, en formación y en consolidación, con infraestructura de primera tanto en equipo como en laboratorios especializados, con profesores de tiempo completo que participan en congresos, seminarios y presentan publicaciones en revistas indexadas. Por ello para celebrar esos veinte años de existencia de esta honorable institución, se planeó la compilación de esta obra que es parte del quehacer multidisciplinario en investigación y docencia como parte del Plan de Desarrollo 2013-2017, de esta administración. Esta obra reúne investigaciones tanto de profesores como de alumnos desde las diferentes ramas del saber en las que se inscriben sus siete licenciaturas, Actuaría, Administración, Contaduría, Derecho, Economía, Relaciones Económicas Internacionales e Informática Administrativa, tanto presencial como a distancia, así como sus tres ingenierías, Industrial, en Computación y Sistemas y Comunicaciones, así como gracias a la vinculación y colaboración académico – científica que se tiene con otras instituciones de educación superior a nivel nacional, como el Instituto Tecnológico de Orizaba, la Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, la Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Universidad Politécnica de Victoria, el Instituto Politécnico Nacional entre otras. En el capítulo 1 se abordan seis temáticas diferentes de vanguardia en el área de las Ingenierías, en los capítulos 2 y 3 se incluyen temas de interés y gran relevancia en materia de ciencias sociales, política y economía.     Bronchoscopist's perception of the quality of the single-use bronchoscope (Ambu aScope4™) in selected bronchoscopies: a multicenter study in 21 Spanish pulmonology services

    Background: The disposable bronchoscope is an excellent alternative to face the problem of SARS-CoV-2 and other cross infections, but the bronchoscopist’s perception of its quality has not been evaluated. Methods: To evaluate the quality of the Ambu-aScope4 disposable bronchoscope, we carried out a cross-sectional study in 21 Spanish pulmonology services. We use a standardized questionnaire completed by the bronchoscopists at the end of each bronchoscopy. The variables were described with absolute and relative frequencies, measures of cen‑ tral tendency and dispersion depending on their nature. The existence of learning curves was evaluated by CUSUM analysis. Results: The most frequent indications in 300 included bronchoscopies was bronchial aspiration in 69.3% and the median duration of these was 9.1 min. The route of entry was nasal in 47.2% and oral in 34.1%. The average score for ease of use, image, and aspiration quality was 80/100. All the planned techniques were performed in 94.9% and the bronchoscopist was satisfed in 96.6% of the bronchoscopies. They highlighted the portability and immediacy of the aScope4TM to start the procedure in 99.3%, the possibility of taking and storing images in 99.3%. The CUSUM analysis showed average scores>70/100 from the frst procedure and from the 9th procedure more than 80% of the scores exceeded the 80/100 score

    Antimicrobial resistance among migrants in Europe: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are rising globally and there is concern that increased migration is contributing to the burden of antibiotic resistance in Europe. However, the effect of migration on the burden of AMR in Europe has not yet been comprehensively examined. Therefore, we did a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify and synthesise data for AMR carriage or infection in migrants to Europe to examine differences in patterns of AMR across migrant groups and in different settings. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus with no language restrictions from Jan 1, 2000, to Jan 18, 2017, for primary data from observational studies reporting antibacterial resistance in common bacterial pathogens among migrants to 21 European Union-15 and European Economic Area countries. To be eligible for inclusion, studies had to report data on carriage or infection with laboratory-confirmed antibiotic-resistant organisms in migrant populations. We extracted data from eligible studies and assessed quality using piloted, standardised forms. We did not examine drug resistance in tuberculosis and excluded articles solely reporting on this parameter. We also excluded articles in which migrant status was determined by ethnicity, country of birth of participants' parents, or was not defined, and articles in which data were not disaggregated by migrant status. Outcomes were carriage of or infection with antibiotic-resistant organisms. We used random-effects models to calculate the pooled prevalence of each outcome. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42016043681. FINDINGS: We identified 2274 articles, of which 23 observational studies reporting on antibiotic resistance in 2319 migrants were included. The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or AMR infection in migrants was 25·4% (95% CI 19·1-31·8; I2 =98%), including meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (7·8%, 4·8-10·7; I2 =92%) and antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (27·2%, 17·6-36·8; I2 =94%). The pooled prevalence of any AMR carriage or infection was higher in refugees and asylum seekers (33·0%, 18·3-47·6; I2 =98%) than in other migrant groups (6·6%, 1·8-11·3; I2 =92%). The pooled prevalence of antibiotic-resistant organisms was slightly higher in high-migrant community settings (33·1%, 11·1-55·1; I2 =96%) than in migrants in hospitals (24·3%, 16·1-32·6; I2 =98%). We did not find evidence of high rates of transmission of AMR from migrant to host populations. INTERPRETATION: Migrants are exposed to conditions favouring the emergence of drug resistance during transit and in host countries in Europe. Increased antibiotic resistance among refugees and asylum seekers and in high-migrant community settings (such as refugee camps and detention facilities) highlights the need for improved living conditions, access to health care, and initiatives to facilitate detection of and appropriate high-quality treatment for antibiotic-resistant infections during transit and in host countries. Protocols for the prevention and control of infection and for antibiotic surveillance need to be integrated in all aspects of health care, which should be accessible for all migrant groups, and should target determinants of AMR before, during, and after migration.     A collaboratively derived environmental research agenda for Galapagos

    Galápagos is one of the most pristine archipelagos in the world and its conservation relies upon research and sensible management. In recent decades both the interest in, and the needs of, the islands have increased, yet the funds and capacity for necessary research have remained limited. It has become, therefore, increasingly important to identify areas of priority research to assist decision-making in Galápagos conservation. This study identified 50 questions considered priorities for future research and management. The exercise involved the collaboration of policy makers, practitioners and researchers from more than 30 different organisations. Initially, 360 people were consulted to generate 781 questions. An established process of preworkshop voting and three rounds to reduce and reword the questions, followed by a two-day workshop, was used to produce the final 50 questions. The most common issues raised by this list of questions were human population growth, climate change and the impact of invasive alien species. These results have already been used by a range of organisations and politicians and are expected to provide the basis for future research on the islands so that its sustainability may be enhanced. </jats:p
