    The processing of past-tense inflection in first language (L1) and second language (L2)

    The present dissertation research investigates how morphologically complex words are processed in isolation and in sentential context by native speakers and second language learners, and how four critical factors in morphological processing (regularity, stem frequency, whole-word frequency, and orthographic similarity) influence this processing. For comparisons between different first languages (Korean L1 and English L1) and between first and second languages (English L1 and English L2), Native Korean Speakers (Exp.1 and 3), Native English Speakers (Exp. 2a and 4a), and Korean Learners of English (Exp. 2b and 4b) were tested. In order to compare the priming effects from words in isolation and words in sentences, sets of inflectional prime and target pairs, one for each language, were used both in a masked priming lexical decision task (Exp.1 and 2) and a self-paced reading task with mask priming (Exp. 3 and 4). The results showed priming effects from inflectional prime and target pairs in both Korean L1 and English L1 when the pairs were presented in isolation, showing morphological sensitivity in both L1 groups. However, when the pairs were embedded in sentences, the priming effect was found only in native English speakers but not in native Korean speakers, implying language-specific differences between Korean and English in processing of inflectional words in sentences. Moreover, even though a similar pattern of priming effects was found for words in isolation, English L2 showed no significant priming effect for words in sentences, consistent with past literature demonstrating less sensitivity to morphological structure in L2. The different patterns of priming effects between the two tasks as well as across the three language groups in the present research were also analyzed in terms of the four morphological factors, and discussed from the perspective of language-specific characteristics. In summary, the present dissertation research examined morphological processing of two typologically different languages in two different reading contexts. The results suggest the importance of language-specific characteristics in various reading conditions in enhancing our understanding of morphological processing in the human mind

    Visual, Lexical, and Contextual Factors Affecting Word Identification During the Reading of Korean

    In order to assess the role of visual, lexical, and contextual information on word identification in Korean, a self-paced reading experiment was conducted. The effects of word length (i.e., number of visual features, letters, phonemes, and syllables), frequency of occurrences in printed text, and word predictability were examined. It was found that the number of syllables and the number of visual features affected reading times significantly, but the other sub-lexical units (i.e., phonemes and letters) did not. Word frequency and predictability affected reading times respectively; however, the interaction between these two variables did not. The results imply that Korean word identification during reading can be affected highly by word frequency and relatively weakly by word predictability. Word frequency also interacted with word length, which is consistent with previous studies. It is concluded that in Korean the relevant processing unit, in the context of reading a sentence, is the syllable, taking internal structure variations into account

    The Time-course of Cross-language Morphological Activation in Korean-English Bilinguals: Evidence from a Masked Priming Experiment

    A masked priming experiment with three prime durations (36, 48, and 72 ms) was conducted to examine the time course of cross-language activation of constituent morphemes in Korean-English bilingual readers. Results showed that real suffixed words in Korean L1 as the primes significantly facilitated responses for the corresponding English L2 translated stems at all prime durations. In contrast, suffixed pseudoword primes (i.e., an illegal combination of a stem and a suffix) in Korean elicited a significant priming effect on English L2 stems only when the prime duration was 48 or 72 ms. These results suggest that there is an early cross-language activation of constituent morphemes in morphological complex words in bilingual reading. However, the time course of the decompositional process is dependent upon the lexicality of the complex words. The early morphological processing in bilingual readers may be driven by supralexical analysis, whereas sublexical analysis of complex words occurs later in cross-language activation in bilingual reading

    The Multilingual Picture Database

    Publisher Copyright: © 2022, The Author(s).The growing interdisciplinary research field of psycholinguistics is in constant need of new and up-to-date tools which will allow researchers to answer complex questions, but also expand on languages other than English, which dominates the field. One type of such tools are picture datasets which provide naming norms for everyday objects. However, existing databases tend to be small in terms of the number of items they include, and have also been normed in a limited number of languages, despite the recent boom in multilingualism research. In this paper we present the Multilingual Picture (Multipic) database, containing naming norms and familiarity scores for 500 coloured pictures, in thirty-two languages or language varieties from around the world. The data was validated with standard methods that have been used for existing picture datasets. This is the first dataset to provide naming norms, and translation equivalents, for such a variety of languages; as such, it will be of particular value to psycholinguists and other interested researchers.     Perfluorocyclobutane (PFC-318, <i>c</i>-C<sub>4</sub>F<sub>8</sub>) in the global atmosphere

    We reconstruct atmospheric abundances of the potent greenhouse gas span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula perfluorocyclobutane, perfluorocarbon PFC-318) from measurements of in situ, archived, firn, and aircraft air samples with precisions of span classCombining double low line inline-formula reported on the SIO-14 gravimetric calibration scale. Combined with inverse methods, we found near-zero atmospheric abundances from the early 1900s to the early 1960s, after which they rose sharply, reaching 1.66ppt (parts per trillion dry-air mole fraction) in 2017. Global span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula emissions rose from near zero in the 1960s to span classCombining double low line inline-formula (1span classCombining double low line inline-formula gyrspan classCombining double low line inline-formula in the late 1970s to late 1980s, then declined to span classCombining double low line inline-formula classCombining double low line inline-formula in the mid-1990s to early 2000s, followed by a rise since the early 2000s to span classCombining double low line inline-formula 2.20±0.05 Ggyrspan classCombining double low line inline-formula in 2017. These emissions are significantly larger than inventory-based emission estimates. Estimated emissions from eastern Asia rose from 0.36Ggyrspan classCombining double low line inline-formula in 2010 to 0.73Ggyrspan classCombining double low line inline-formula in 2016 and 2017, 31% of global emissions, mostly from eastern China. We estimate emissions of 0.14Ggyrspan classCombining double low line inline-formula from northern and central India in 2016 and find evidence for significant emissions from Russia. In contrast, recent emissions from northwestern Europe and Australia are estimated to be small (span classCombining double low line inline-formula % each). We suggest that emissions from China, India, andspan idCombining double low line page10336 Russia are likely related to production of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon ) and other fluoropolymers and fluorochemicals that are based on the pyrolysis of hydrochlorofluorocarbon HCFC-22 (span classCombining double low line inline-formula) in which span classCombining double low line inline-formula classCombining double low line inline-formula is a known by-product. The semiconductor sector, where span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula is used, is estimated to be a small source, at least in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Europe. Without an obvious correlation with population density, incineration of waste-containing fluoropolymers is probably a minor source, and we find no evidence of emissions from electrolytic production of aluminum in Australia. While many possible emissive uses of span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula are known and though we cannot categorically exclude unknown sources, the start of significant emissions may well be related to the advent of commercial PTFE production in 1947. Process controls or abatement to reduce the span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula by-product were probably not in place in the early decades, explaining the increase in emissions in the 1960s and 1970s. With the advent of by-product reporting requirements to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in the 1990s, concern about climate change and product stewardship, abatement, and perhaps the collection of span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula by-product for use in the semiconductor industry where it can be easily abated, it is conceivable that emissions in developed countries were stabilized and then reduced, explaining the observed emission reduction in the 1980s and 1990s. Concurrently, production of PTFE in China began to increase rapidly. Without emission reduction requirements, it is plausible that global emissions today are dominated by China and other developing countries. We predict that span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula emissions will continue to rise and that span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula will become the second most important emitted PFC in terms of span classCombining double low line inline-formula equivalent emissions within a year or two. The 2017 radiative forcing of span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula 0.52mWmspan classCombining double low line inline-formula) is small but emissions of span classCombining double low line inline-formula span classCombining double low line inline-formula and other PFCs, due to their very long atmospheric lifetimes, essentially permanently alter Earth's radiative budget and should be reduced. Significant emissions inferred outside of the investigated regions clearly show that observational capabilities and reporting requirements need to be improved to understand global and country-scale emissions of PFCs and other synthetic greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances.United States.
