The dynamics of employment growth: new evidence from 18 countries
Motivated by the on-going interest of policy makers in the sources of job creation, this paper presents results from a new OECD project on the dynamics of employment (DynEmp) based on an innovative methodology using firm-level data (i.e. national business registers or similar sources). It demonstrates that among small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), young firms play a central role in creating jobs, whereas old SMEs tend to destroy jobs. This pattern holds robustly across 17 OECD countries and Brazil, extending recent evidence found in the United States. The paper also shows that young firms are always net job creators throughout the business cycle, even during the financial crisis. During the crisis, entry and post-entry growth by young firms were affected most heavily, although downsizing by old firms was responsible for most job losses. The results also highlight large cross-country differences in the growth potential of young firms, pointing to the role played by national policies in enabling successful firms to create jobs
The best versus the rest: divergence across firms during the global productivity slowdown
We document that labor productivity of the globally most productive firms – the “frontier” – has diverged from all other firms – the “rest” – throughout the 2000s. This divergence remains after controlling for capital intensity and markups, and is strongest in ICT services, indicative of “winnertakes-all” dynamics. We also find weakening catch-up and market selection below the frontier, which can explain why this divergence at the firm level is linked to weaker aggregate productivity. The divergence is found to be stronger in industries where product market regulations are less competition friendly, highlighting the need for regulatory policy to improve the contestability of markets
Type II Supernovae as Probes of Cosmology
- Constraining the cosmological parameters and understanding Dark Energy have
tremendous implications for the nature of the Universe and its physical laws.
- The pervasive limit of systematic uncertainties reached by cosmography
based on Cepheids and Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) warrants a search for
complementary approaches.
- Type II SNe have been shown to offer such a path. Their distances can be
well constrained by luminosity-based or geometric methods. Competing,
complementary, and concerted efforts are underway, to explore and exploit those
objects that are extremely well matched to next generation facilities.
Spectroscopic follow-up will be enabled by space- based and 20-40 meter class
telescopes.
- Some systematic uncertainties of Type II SNe, such as reddening by dust and
metallicity effects, are bound to be different from those of SNe Ia. Their
stellar progenitors are known, promising better leverage on cosmic evolution.
In addition, their rate - which closely tracks the ongoing star formation rate
- is expected to rise significantly with look- back time, ensuring an adequate
supply of distant examples.
- These data will competitively constrain the dark energy equation of state,
allow the determination of the Hubble constant to 5%, and promote our
understanding of the processes involved in the last dramatic phases of massive

Strong Ultraviolet Pulse From a Newborn Type Ia Supernova
Type Ia supernovae are destructive explosions of carbon oxygen white dwarfs.
Although they are used empirically to measure cosmological distances, the
nature of their progenitors remains mysterious, One of the leading progenitor
models, called the single degenerate channel, hypothesizes that a white dwarf
accretes matter from a companion star and the resulting increase in its central
pressure and temperature ignites thermonuclear explosion. Here we report
observations of strong but declining ultraviolet emission from a Type Ia
supernova within four days of its explosion. This emission is consistent with
theoretical expectations of collision between material ejected by the supernova
and a companion star, and therefore provides evidence that some Type Ia

PTF10iya: A short-lived, luminous flare from the nuclear region of a star-forming galaxy
We present the discovery and characterisation of PTF10iya, a short-lived (dt
~ 10 d, with an optical decay rate of ~ 0.3 mag per d), luminous (M_g ~ -21
mag) transient source found by the Palomar Transient Factory. The
ultraviolet/optical spectral energy distribution is reasonably well fit by a
blackbody with T ~ 1-2 x 10^4 K and peak bolometric luminosity L_BB ~ 1-5 x
10^44 erg per s (depending on the details of the extinction correction). A
comparable amount of energy is radiated in the X-ray band that appears to
result from a distinct physical process. The location of PTF10iya is consistent
with the nucleus of a star-forming galaxy (z = 0.22405 +/- 0.00006) to within
350 mas (99.7 per cent confidence radius), or a projected distance of less than
1.2 kpc. At first glance, these properties appear reminiscent of the
characteristic "big blue bump" seen in the near-ultraviolet spectra of many
active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, emission-line diagnostics of the host
galaxy, along with a historical light curve extending back to 2007, show no
evidence for AGN-like activity. We therefore consider whether the tidal
disruption of a star by an otherwise quiescent supermassive black hole may
account for our observations. Though with limited temporal information,
PTF10iya appears broadly consistent with the predictions for the early
"super-Eddington" phase of a solar-type star disrupted by a ~ 10^7 M_sun black
hole. Regardless of the precise physical origin of the accreting material, the
large luminosity and short duration suggest that otherwise quiescent galaxies
can transition extremely rapidly to radiate near the Eddington limit; many such
outbursts may have been missed by previous surveys lacking sufficient cadence.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures; revised following referee's comment
Human Galectins Induce Conversion of Dermal Fibroblasts into Myofibroblasts and Production of Extracellular Matrix: Potential Application in Tissue Engineering and Wound Repair
Members of the galectin family of endogenous lectins are potent adhesion/growth-regulatory effectors. Their multi-functionality opens possibilities for their use in bioapplications. We studied whether human galectins induce the conversion of human dermal fibroblasts into myofibroblasts (MFBs) and the production of a bioactive extracellular matrix scaffold is suitable for cell culture. Testing a panel of galectins of all three subgroups, including natural and engineered variants, we detected activity for the proto-type galectin-1 and galectin-7, the chimera-type galectin-3 and the tandem-repeat-type galectin-4. The activity of galectin-1 required the integrity of the carbohydrate recognition domain. It was independent of the presence of TGF-beta 1, but it yielded an additive effect. The resulting MFBs, relevant, for example, for tumor progression, generated a matrix scaffold rich in fibronectin and galectin-1 that supported keratinocyte culture without feeder cells. Of note, keratinocytes cultured on this substratum presented a stem-like cell phenotype with small size and keratin-19 expression. In vivo in rats, galectin-1 had a positive effect on skin wound closure 21 days after surgery. In conclusion, we describe the differential potential of certain human galectins to induce the conversion of dermal fibroblasts into MFBs and the generation of a bioactive cell culture substratum. SN 2011ht: Confirming a Class of Interacting Supernovae with Plateau Light Curves (Type IIn-P)
We present photometry and spectroscopy of the Type IIn supernova (SN) 2011ht,
identified previously as a SN impostor. The light curve exhibits an abrupt
transition from a well-defined ~120 day plateau to a steep bolometric decline.
Leading up to peak brightness, a hot emission-line spectrum exhibits signs of
interaction with circumstellar material (CSM), in the form of relatively narrow
P-Cygni features of H I and He I superimposed on broad Lorentzian wings. For
the remainder of the plateau phase the spectrum exhibits strengthening P-Cygni
profiles of Fe II, Ca II, and H-alpha. By day 147, after the plateau has ended,
the SN entered the nebular phase, heralded by the appearance of forbidden
transitions of [O I], [O II], and [Ca II] over a weak continuum. At this stage,
the light curve exhibits a low luminosity that is comparable to that
sub-luminous Type II-P supernovae, and a relatively fast visual-wavelength
decline that is significantly steeper than the Co-56 decay rate. However, the
total bolometric decline, including the IR luminosity, is consistent with Co-56
decay, and implies a low Ni-56 mass of ~0.01 M(Sun). We therefore characterize
SN 2011ht as a bona-fide core-collapse SN very similar to the peculiar SNe IIn
1994W and 2009kn. These three SNe define a subclass, which are Type IIn based
on their spectrum, but that also exhibit well-defined plateaus and produce low
Ni-56 yields. We therefore suggest Type IIn-P as a name for this subclass.
Possible progenitors of SNe IIn-P, consistent with the available data, include
8-10 M(Sun) stars, which undergo core collapse as a result of electron capture
after a brief phase of enhanced mass loss, or more massive M>25 M(Sun)
progenitors, which experience substantial fallback of the metal-rich
radioactive ejecta. In either case, the energy radiated by these three SNe

Variable Sodium Absorption in a Low-Extinction Type Ia Supernova
Recent observations have revealed that some Type Ia supernovae exhibit
narrow, time-variable Na I D absorption features. The origin of the absorbing
material is controversial, but it may suggest the presence of circumstellar gas
in the progenitor system prior to the explosion, with significant implications
for the nature of the supernova progenitors. We present the third detection of
such variable absorption, based on six epochs of high-resolution spectroscopy
of the Type Ia supernova SN 2007le from Keck and the HET. The data span ~3
months, from 5 days before maximum light to 90 days after maximum. We find that
one component of the Na D absorption lines strengthened significantly with
time, indicating a total column density increase of ~2.5 x 10^12 cm^-2. The
changes are most prominent after maximum light rather than at earlier times
when the UV flux from the SN peaks. As with SN 2006X, we detect no change in
the Ca II H&K lines over the same time period, rendering line-of-sight effects
improbable and suggesting a circumstellar origin for the absorbing material.
Unlike the previous two SNe exhibiting variable absorption, SN 2007le is not
highly reddened (E_B-V = 0.27 mag), also pointing toward circumstellar rather
than interstellar absorption. Photoionization models show that the data are
consistent with a dense (10^7 cm^-3) cloud or clouds of gas located ~0.1 pc
from the explosion. These results broadly support the single-degenerate
scenario previously proposed to explain the variable absorption, with mass loss
from a nondegenerate companion star responsible for providing the circumstellar
gas. We also present tentative evidence for narrow Halpha emission associated
with the SN, which will require followup observations at late times to confirm.

Real-world overall survival after alternative dosing for pembrolizumab in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer:A nationwide retrospective cohort study with a non-inferiority primary objective
Background: High and increasing expenses on pembrolizumab ask for more cost-effective and sustainable treatment strategies to improve affordability of healthcare. Therefore, a part of the Dutch hospitals implemented an alternative, partially lower, weight-based dosing protocol for pembrolizumab. This provided the unique opportunity to compare the overall survival (OS) of the alternative pembrolizumab dosing protocol to standard dosing using a nationwide registry in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study with a non-inferiority primary objective. Forty hospitals in the Dutch Medication Audit and Dutch Lung Cancer Audit treated 1966 patients with NSCLC with first line pembrolizumab (mono- or combination therapy) between Jan 1st 2021, and Mar 31st, 2023. Alternative weight-based pembrolizumab dosing (100/150/200 mg Q3W or 200/300/400 mg Q6W) was administered to 604 patients, and 1362 patients received standard pembrolizumab dosing (200 mg Q3W or 400 mg Q6W). A Cox proportional hazard model with selected covariates was used to compare the OS between alternative and standard dosing protocols. The non-inferiority margin was set at a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.2 for OS. Non-inferiority is established by showing that the upper limit of the 95 % confidence interval (CI) of the HR of OS is smaller or equal to 1.2. Results: Distribution of age (66.7 years +/-9.4), sex (45 % female) and treatment combinations were similar for both groups, comorbidity score was higher in the standard group. Median daily dose in the alternative dosing group was 22 % lower compared to the standard dosing group, 7.14 mg/day (interquartile range (IQR):5.48–8.04 mg/day) vs. 9.15 mg/day (IQR:8.33–9.52 mg/day), respectively. Alternative dosing was non-inferior to standard dosing regarding overall survival (adjusted HR 0.83, 95 %CI:0.69–1.003). Conclusion: This large, retrospective real-world analysis supports the hypothesis that the alternative, partially lower pembrolizumab dosing protocol in NSCLC maintains treatment effectiveness while reducing treatment costs.</p
Rapid Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay for Detection of the Algal Toxin Domoic Acid
Domoic acid (DA) is a potent toxin produced by bloom-forming phytoplankton in the genus Pseudo-nitzschia, which is responsible for causing amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) in humans. ASP symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and in more severe cases confusion, loss of memory, disorientation, and even coma or death. This paper describes the development and validation of a rapid, sensitive, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay test kit for detecting DA using a monoclonal antibody. The assay gives equivalent results to those obtained using standard high performance liquid chromatography, fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl high performance liquid chromatography, or liquid chromatography—mass spectrometry methods. It has a linear range from 0.1–3 ppb and was used successfully to measure DA in razor clams, mussels, scallops, and phytoplankton. The assay requires approximately 1.5 h to complete and has a standard 96-well format where each strip of eight wells is removable and can be stored at 4°C until needed. The first two wells of each strip serve as an internal control eliminating the need to run a standard curve. This allows as few as 3 or as many as 36 duplicate samples to be run at a time enabling real-time sample processing and limiting degradation of DA, which can occur during storage. There was minimal cross-reactivity in this assay with glutamine, glutamic acid, kainic acid, epi- or iso-DA. This accurate, rapid, cost-effective, assay offers environmental managers and public health officials an effective tool for monitoring DA concentrations in environment samples
