During June, 1960, the M/V Hermes of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory made several trawl hauls south of Horn Island, Mississippi. One haul was made June 27 at a depth of 20 m. on sandy mud botton at 30°04’30” N., 88”36’ W., or about 10 nautical miles south of Horn Island. A considerable number of animals, including starfish, hermit crabs and tube worms, were caught in the trawl. Pieces of the parchment-like worm tube of Chaetopterus variopedatus (Renier) were caught in the meshes of the net and were also collected. A small bivalve mollusk, Notocorbula operculata (Philippi 1848) was found to be attached to most of the Chaetopterus tubes. Microscopic examination showed that the bivalves were attached at the anterior ventral margin with a byssal thread. This little clam has been found under similar conditions at Dry Tortugas, Florida (Harvey R. Bullis, Jr., personal communication). It has been reported as abundant in 22-65 m. of water on mud bottom along the entire northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico (Parker 1960). It was also noticed that a single species of Foraminifera was attached to many of the clams. The attachment was not very strong, seeming to consist merely of a weak cement holding the ventral surface of the foraminifer to the bivalve shell, nor was it confined to a particular area on the bivalve, but occurred in any position on either valve

    Z-Spec: a broadband direct-detection millimeter-wave spectrometer -- instrument status and first results

    Get PDF
We report on the status of Z-Spec, including preliminary results of our first astronomical measurements. Z-Spec is a cryogenic, broadband, millimeter-wave grating spectrometer designed for molecular line surveys of galaxies, including carbon monoxide redshift measurements of high-redshift submillimeter sources. With an instantaneous bandwidth of 185-305 GHz, Z-Spec covers the entire 1 mm atmospheric transmission window with a resolving power of 200-400. The spectrometer employs the Waveguide Far-Infrared Spectrometer (WaFIRS) architecture, in which the light propagation is confined within a parallel-plate waveguide, resulting in a minimum mechanical envelope. Its array of 160 silicon-nitride micromesh bolometers is cooled to below 100 mK for background-limited performance. With its sensitivity, broad bandwidth, and compactness, Z-Spec serves as a prototype for a future far-IR spectrometer aboard a cold telescope in space. Z-Spec successfully demonstrated functionality with a partial array of detectors and warm electronics during a week-long engineering run at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory in June, 2005. We describe the instrument performance evaluated at the telescope and in subsequent laboratory tests and compare these results with design specifications. Following several modifications we returned to the telescope in April, 2006. We present a preliminary astronomical spectrum and discuss our plans to improve sensitivity and throughput to achieve our ultimate science goals

A search for neutral Higgs bosons in the MSSM and models with two scalar field doublets

A search is described for the neutral Higgs bosons h^0 and A^0 predicted by models with two scalar field doublets and, in particular, the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The search in the Z^0 h^0 and h^0 A^0 production channels is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 pb^{-1} from e^+e^- collisions at centre-of-mass energies between 130 and 172GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. The observation of a number of candidates consistent with Standard Model background expectations is used in combination with earlier results from data collected at the Z^0 resonance to set limits on m_h and m_A in general models with two scalar field doublets and in the MSSM. For example, in the MSSM, for tan(beta) > 1, minimal and maximal scalar top quark mixing and soft SUSY-breaking masses of 1 TeV, the 95% confidence level limits m_h > 59.0 GeV and m_A > 59.5 GeV are obtained. For the first time, the MSSM parameter space is explored in a detailed scan.A search is described for the neutral Higgs bosons h^0 and A^0 predicted by models with two scalar field doublets and, in particular, the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). Helicity density matrix elements for inclusive K*(892)^0 mesons from hadronic Z^0 decays have been measured over the full range of K^*0 momentum using data taken with the OPAL experiment at LEP. A preference for occupation of the helicity zero state is observed at all scaled momentum x_p values above 0.3, with the matrix element rho_00 rising to 0.66 +/- 0.11 for x_p > 0.7. The values of the real part of the off-diagonal element rho_1-1 are negative at large x_p, with a weighted average value of -0.09 +/- 0.03 for x_p > 0.3, in agreement with new theoretical predictions based on Standard Model parameters and coherent fragmentation of the qq(bar) system from the Z^0 decay. All other helicity density matrix elements measured are consistent with zero over the entire x_p range. The K^*0 fragmentation function has also been measured and the total rate determined to be 0.74 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.02 K*(892)^0 mesons per hadronic Z^0 decay.Helicity density matrix elements for inclusive K*(892)^0 mesons from hadronic Z^0 decays have been measured over the full range of K^*0 momentum using data taken with the OPAL experiment at LEP. A stochastic multidimensional scaling procedure for the spatial representation of three-mode, three-way pick any/ J data

This paper presents a new stochastic multidimensional scaling procedure for the analysis of three-mode, three-way pick any/ J data. The method provides either a vector or ideal-point model to represent the structure in such data, as well as “floating” model specifications (e.g., different vectors or ideal points for different choice settings), and various reparameterization options that allow the coordinates of ideal points, vectors, or stimuli to be functions of specified background variables. A maximum likelihood procedure is utilized to estimate a joint space of row and column objects, as well as a set of weights depicting the third mode of the data. An algorithm using a conjugate gradient method with automatic restarts is developed to estimate the parameters of the models. A series of Monte Carlo analyses are carried out to investigate the performance of the algorithm under diverse data and model specification conditions, examine the statistical properties of the associated test statistic, and test the robustness of the procedure to departures from the independence assumptions. Finally, a consumer psychology application assessing the impact of situational influences on consumers' choice behavior is discussed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45749/1/11336_2005_Article_BF02294486.pd

A stochastic multidimensional scaling vector threshold model for the spatial representation of “pick any/ n ” data

This paper presents a new stochastic multidimensional scaling vector threshold model designed to analyze “pick any/ n ” choice data (e.g., consumers rendering buy/no buy decisions concerning a number of actual products). A maximum likelihood procedure is formulated to estimate a joint space of both individuals (represented as vectors) and stimuli (represented as points). The relevant psychometric literature concerning the spatial treatment of such binary choice data is reviewed. The nonlinear probit type model is described, as well as the conjugate gradient procedure used to estimate parameters. Results of Monte Carlo analyses investigating the performance of this methodology with synthetic choice data sets are presented. An application concerning consumer choices for eleven competitive brands of soft drinks is discussed. Finally, directions for future research are presented in terms of further applications and generalizing the model to accommodate three-way choice data.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45743/1/11336_2005_Article_BF02294452.pd

Search for dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks in √s = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search for weakly interacting massive particle dark matter produced in association with bottom or top quarks is presented. Final states containing third-generation quarks and miss- ing transverse momentum are considered. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. No significant excess of events above the estimated backgrounds is observed. The results are in- terpreted in the framework of simplified models of spin-0 dark-matter mediators. For colour- neutral spin-0 mediators produced in association with top quarks and decaying into a pair of dark-matter particles, mediator masses below 50 GeV are excluded assuming a dark-matter candidate mass of 1 GeV and unitary couplings. For scalar and pseudoscalar mediators produced in association with bottom quarks, the search sets limits on the production cross- section of 300 times the predicted rate for mediators with masses between 10 and 50 GeV and assuming a dark-matter mass of 1 GeV and unitary coupling. Constraints on colour- charged scalar simplified models are also presented. Assuming a dark-matter particle mass of 35 GeV, mediator particles with mass below 1.1 TeV are excluded for couplings yielding a dark-matter relic density consistent with measurements
