Bread or games? Social cost-benefit analysis of the World Cup in the Netherlands

    Get PDF
Ex post analyses of major sporting events show that the benefits for the organizing countries are often greatly over-estimated in advance. A major portion of the proceeds (e.g., tickets, broadcasting rights, marketing) goes to the organizing sports federation, while most of the costs are borne by the organizing country. Nonetheless, there is fierce competition between candidate countries for the right to organize tournaments like the Olympic Games and the World Cup. We demonstrate this paradox through a social cost-benefit analysis of holding the 2018 World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium. The results show that national pride and pleasure come at a price. The research also shows that a complete ex ante study is needed to reveal the balance between the organization of a sporting event and the costs that are associated with it

Real-World Implementation of a Genotype-Guided P2Y12 Inhibitor De-Escalation Strategy in Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients

    Get PDF
Background: CYP2C19 genotype–guided de-escalation from ticagrelor or prasugrel to clopidogrel may optimize the balance between ischemic and bleeding risk in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Objectives: This study sought to compare bleeding and ischemic event rates in genotyped patients vs standard care. Methods: Since 2015, ACS patients in the multicenter FORCE-ACS (Future Optimal Research and Care Evaluation in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome) registry received standard dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). Since 2021, genotype-guided P2Y12 inhibitor de-escalation was recommended at a single center, switching noncarriers of the loss-of-function allele CYP2C19∗3 or CYP2C19∗2 from ticagrelor or prasugrel to clopidogrel, whereas loss-of-function carriers remained on ticagrelor or prasugrel. The primary ischemic endpoint, a composite of cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, or stroke, and the primary bleeding endpoint, Bleeding Academic Research Consortium 2, 3, or 5 bleeding, were compared between a genotyped cohort and a cohort treated with standard DAPT after 1 year. Results: Among 5,321 enrolled ACS patients, 406 underwent genotyping compared with 4,915 nongenotyped ACS patients on standard DAPT. In the genotyped cohort, 65.3% (n = 265) were noncarriers, 88.7% (n = 235) of whom were switched to clopidogrel. The primary ischemic endpoint occurred in 5.2% (n = 21) of patients in the genotyped cohort compared to 6.9% (n = 337) in the standard care cohort (adjusted HR: 0.82; 95% CI: 0.53-1.28). The primary bleeding rate was significantly lower in the genotyped cohort compared to the standard care cohort (4.7% vs 9.8%; adjusted HR: 0.47; 95% CI: 0.30-0.76). Conclusions: The implementation of a CYP2C19 genotype–guided P2Y12 inhibitor de-escalation strategy in a real-world ACS population resulted in lower bleeding rates without an increase in ischemic events compared to a standard DAPT regimen

How Do Different Forms of Vascular Brain Injury Relate to Cognition in a Memory Clinic Population: The TRACE-VCI Study

    Get PDF
Background: Memory clinic patients frequently present with different forms of vascular brain injury due to different etiologies, often co-occurring with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. / Objective: We studied how cognition was affected by different forms of vascular brain injury, possibly in interplay with AD pathology. / Methods: We included 860 memory clinic patients with vascular brain injury on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), receiving a standardized evaluation including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarker analyses (n = 541). The cognitive profile of patients with different forms of vascular brain injury on MRI (moderate/severe white matter hyperintensities (WMH) (n = 398), microbleeds (n = 368), lacunar (n = 188) and non-lacunar (n = 96) infarct(s), macrobleeds (n = 16)) was assessed by: 1) comparison of all these different forms of vascular brain injury with a reference group (patients with only mild WMH (n = 205) without other forms of vascular brain injury), using linear regression analyses also stratified for CSF biomarker AD profile and 2) multivariate linear regression analysis. / Results: The cognitive profile was remarkably similar across groups. Compared to the reference group effect sizes on all domains were <0.2 with narrow 95% confidence intervals, except for non-lacunar infarcts on information processing speed (age, sex, and education adjusted mean difference from reference group (β: – 0.26, p = 0.05). Results were similar in the presence (n = 300) or absence (n = 241) of biomarker co-occurring AD pathology. In multivariate linear regression analysis, higher WMH burden was related to a slightly worse performance on attention and executive functioning (β: – 0.08, p = 0.02) and working memory (β: – 0.08, p = 0.04). / Conclusion: Although different forms of vascular brain injury have different etiologies and different patterns of cerebral damage, they show a largely similar cognitive profile in memory clinic patients regardless of co-occurring AD pathology

Search for displaced vertices arising from decays of new heavy particles in 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS

    Get PDF
We present the results of a search for new, heavy particles that decay at a significant distance from their production point into a final state containing charged hadrons in association with a high-momentum muon. The search is conducted in a pp-collision data sample with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 33 pb^-1 collected in 2010 by the ATLAS detector operating at the Large Hadron Collider. Production of such particles is expected in various scenarios of physics beyond the standard model. We observe no signal and place limits on the production cross-section of supersymmetric particles in an R-parity-violating scenario as a function of the neutralino lifetime. Limits are presented for different squark and neutralino masses, enabling extension of the limits to a variety of other models.Comment: 8 pages plus author list (20 pages total), 8 figures, 1 table, final version to appear in Physics Letters

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced with large transverse momentum in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment

This paper describes an analysis of the angular distribution of W->enu and W->munu decays, using data from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb^-1. Using the decay lepton transverse momentum and the missing transverse energy, the W decay angular distribution projected onto the transverse plane is obtained and analysed in terms of helicity fractions f0, fL and fR over two ranges of W transverse momentum (ptw): 35 < ptw < 50 GeV and ptw > 50 GeV. Good agreement is found with theoretical predictions. For ptw > 50 GeV, the values of f0 and fL-fR, averaged over charge and lepton flavour, are measured to be : f0 = 0.127 +/- 0.030 +/- 0.108 and fL-fR = 0.252 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.030, where the first uncertainties are statistical, and the second include all systematic effects.Comment: 19 pages plus author list (34 pages total), 9 figures, 11 tables, revised author list, matches European Journal of Physics C versio

Observation of a new chi_b state in radiative transitions to Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) at ATLAS

    Get PDF
The chi_b(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb^-1, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Upsilon(1S,2S) with Upsilon->mu+mu-. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes chi_b(1P,2P)->Upsilon(1S)gamma, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530+/-0.005 (stat.)+/-0.009 (syst.) GeV is also observed, in both the Upsilon(1S)gamma and Upsilon(2S)gamma decay modes. This is interpreted as the chi_b(3P) system.Comment: 5 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 1 table, corrected author list, matches final version in Physical Review Letter

Measurement of the inclusive isolated prompt photon cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV using 35 pb-1 of ATLAS data

    Get PDF
A measurement of the differential cross-section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges |eta|<1.37 and 1.52<=|eta|<2.37 in the transverse energy range 45<=E_T<400GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1, collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The yields of the signal photons are measured using a data-driven technique, based on the observed distribution of the hadronic energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate and the photon selection criteria. The results are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and found to be in good agreement over four orders of magnitude in cross-section.Comment: 7 pages plus author list (18 pages total), 2 figures, 4 tables, final version published in Physics Letters
