Consensus, polarization, and alignment in the economics profession
Scholars interested in the political influence of the economics profession debate whether the discipline is unified by policy consensus or divided among competing schools or factions. We address this question by reanalyzing a unique recent survey of elite economists. We present a theoretical framework based on a formal sociological approach to the structure of belief systems and propose alignment, rather than consensus or polarization, as a model for the structure of belief in the economics profession. Moreover, we argue that social clustering in a heterogeneous network topology is a better model for disciplinary social structure than discrete factionalization. Results show that there is a robust latent ideological dimension related to economistsâ departmental affiliations and political partisanship. Furthermore, we show that economists closer to one another in informal social networks also share more similar ideologies
Supersymmetric Dark Matter - How Light Can the LSP Be?
Using a very minimal set of theoretical assumptions we derive a lower limit
on the LSP mass in the MSSM. We only require that the LSP be the lightest
neutralino, that it be responsible for the observed relic density and that the
MSSM spectrum respect the LEP2 limits. We explicitly do not require any further
knowledge about the MSSM spectrum or the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking.
Under these assumptions we determine a firm lower limit on the neutralino LSP
mass of 18\gev. We estimate the effect of improved limits on the cold dark
matter relic density as well as the effects of improved LEP2-type limits from a
first stage of TESLA on the allowed range of neutralino LSP masses.Comment: 12 pages, 3 Figures, v2: published versio
Observation of Parametric Instability in Advanced LIGO
Parametric instabilities have long been studied as a potentially limiting
effect in high-power interferometric gravitational wave detectors. Until now,
however, these instabilities have never been observed in a kilometer-scale
interferometer. In this work we describe the first observation of parametric
instability in an Advanced LIGO detector, and the means by which it has been
removed as a barrier to progress
The early spectral evolution of SN 2004dt
Aims. We study the optical spectroscopic properties of Type Ia Supernova (SN
Ia) 2004dt, focusing our attention on the early epochs.
Methods. Observation triggered soon after the SN 2004dt discovery allowed us
to obtain a spectrophotometric coverage from day -10 to almost one year (~353
days) after the B band maximum. Observations carried out on an almost daily
basis allowed us a good sampling of the fast spectroscopic evolution of SN
2004dt in the early stages. To obtain this result, low-resolution, long-slit
spectroscopy was obtained using a number of facilities.
Results. This supernova, which in some absorption lines of its early spectra
showed the highest degree of polarization ever measured in any SN Ia, has a
complex velocity structure in the outer layers of its ejecta. Unburnt oxygen is
present, moving at velocities as high as ~16,700 km/s, with some
intermediate-mass elements (Mg, Si, Ca) moving equally fast. Modeling of the
spectra based on standard density profiles of the ejecta fails to reproduce the
observed features, whereas enhancing the density of outer layers significantly
improves the fit. Our analysis indicates the presence of clumps of
high-velocity, intermediate-mass elements in the outermost layers, which is

The Cold Peace: Russo-Western Relations as a Mimetic Cold War
In 1989â1991 the geo-ideological contestation between two blocs was swept away, together with the ideology of civil war and its concomitant Cold War played out on the larger stage. Paradoxically, while the domestic sources of Cold War confrontation have been transcended, its external manifestations remain in the form of a âlegacyâ geopolitical contest between the dominant hegemonic power (the United States) and a number of potential rising great powers, of which Russia is one. The post-revolutionary era is thus one of a âcold peaceâ. A cold peace is a mimetic cold war. In other words, while a cold war accepts the logic of conflict in the international system and between certain protagonists in particular, a cold peace reproduces the behavioural patterns of a cold war but suppresses acceptance of the logic of behaviour. A cold peace is accompanied by a singular stress on notions of victimhood for some and undigested and bitter victory for others. The perceived victim status of one set of actors provides the seedbed for renewed conflict, while the âvictoryâ of the others cannot be consolidated in some sort of relatively unchallenged post-conflict order. The âuniversalismâ of the victors is now challenged by Russia's neo-revisionist policy, including not so much the defence of Westphalian notions of sovereignty but the espousal of an international system with room for multiple systems (the Schmittean pluriverse)

Positive youth development in swimming: clarification and consensus of key psychosocial assets
The purpose of this study was to gain a more cohesive understanding of the assets considered necessary to develop in young swimmers to ensure both individual and sport specific development. This two stage study involved (a) a content analysis of key papers to develop a list of both psychosocial skills for performance enhancement and assets associated with positive youth development, and (b) in-depth interviews involving ten expert swim coaches, practitioners and youth sport scholars. Five higher order categories containing seventeen individual assets emerged. These results are discussed in relation to both existing models of positive youth development and implications for coaches, practitioners and parents when considering the psychosocial development of young British swimmers
TB research at UT-Houston--a review of cord factor: new approaches to drugs, vaccines and the pathogenesis of tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis remains a major threat as drug resistance continues to increase. Pulmonary tuberculosis in adults is responsible for 80% of clinical cases and nearly 100% of transmission of infection. Unfortunately, since we have no animal models of adult type pulmonary tuberculosis, the most important type of disease remains largely out of reach of modern science and many fundamental questions remain unanswered. This paper reviews research dating back to the 1950\u27s providing compelling evidence that cord factor (trehalose 6,6 dimycolate [TDM]) is essential for understanding tuberculosis. However, the original papers by Bloch and Noll were too far ahead of their time to have immediate impact. We can now recognize that the physical and biologic properties of cord factor are unprecedented in science, especially its ability to switch between two sets of biologic activities with changes in conformation. While TDM remains on organisms, it protects them from killing within macrophages, reduces antibiotic effectiveness and inhibits the stimulation of protective immune responses. If it comes off organisms and associates with lipid, TDM becomes a driver of tissue damage and necrosis. Studies emanating from cord factor research have produced (1) a rationale for improving vaccines, (2) an approach to new drugs that overcome natural resistance to antibiotics, (3) models of caseating granulomas that reproduce multiple manifestations of human tuberculosis. (4) evidence that TDM is a key T cell antigen in destructive lesions of tuberculosis, and (5) a new understanding of the pathology and pathogenesis of postprimary tuberculosis that can guide more informative studies of long standing mysteries of tuberculosis
Toward an internally consistent astronomical distance scale
Accurate astronomical distance determination is crucial for all fields in
astrophysics, from Galactic to cosmological scales. Despite, or perhaps because
of, significant efforts to determine accurate distances, using a wide range of
methods, tracers, and techniques, an internally consistent astronomical
distance framework has not yet been established. We review current efforts to
homogenize the Local Group's distance framework, with particular emphasis on
the potential of RR Lyrae stars as distance indicators, and attempt to extend
this in an internally consistent manner to cosmological distances. Calibration
based on Type Ia supernovae and distance determinations based on gravitational
lensing represent particularly promising approaches. We provide a positive
outlook to improvements to the status quo expected from future surveys,
missions, and facilities. Astronomical distance determination has clearly

Measurement of the dijet invariant mass cross section in proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV
The inclusive dijet production double differential cross section as a
function of the dijet invariant mass and of the largest absolute rapidity of
the two jets with the largest transverse momentum in an event is measured in
proton anti-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using 0.7 fb^{-1}
integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider. The measurement is performed in six rapidity regions up to a maximum
rapidity of 2.4. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions are found
