Spatially resolved stress measurements in materials with polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography: image acquisition and processing aspects

We demonstrate that polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) is suitable to map the stress distribution within materials in a contactless and non-destructive way. In contrast to transmission photoelasticity measurements the samples do not have to be transparent but can be of scattering nature. Denoising and analysis of fringe patterns in single PS-OCT retardation images are demonstrated to deliver the basis for a quantitative whole-field evaluation of the internal stress state of samples under investigation.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; Copyright: Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2008; The definitive version is available at: www.blackwell-synergy.co

Surface imaging of metallic material fractures using optical coherence tomography

We demonstrate the capability of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to perform topography of metallic surfaces after being subjected to ductile or brittle fracturing. Two steel samples, OL 37 and OL 52, and an antifriction Sn-Sb-Cu alloy were analyzed. Using an in-house-built swept source OCT system, height profiles were generated for the surfaces of the two samples. Based on such profiles, it can be concluded that the first two samples were subjected to ductile fracture, while the third one was subjected to brittle fracture. The OCT potential for assessing the surface state of materials after fracture was evaluated by comparing OCT images with images generated using an established method for such investigations, scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Analysis of cause of fracture is essential in response to damage of machinery parts during various accidents. Currently the analysis is performed using SEM, on samples removed from the metallic parts, while OCT would allow in situ imaging using mobile units. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the OCT capability to replace SEM has been demonstrated. SEM is a more costly and time-consuming method to use in the investigation of surfaces of microstructures of metallic materials. © 2014 Optical Society of America

Nanolithography based on real-time electrically-controlled indentation with an atomic force microscope for nanocontacts elaboration

We report on the fabrication of nanocontacts by indentation of an ultrathin insulating photoresist layer deposited on various types of conductive structures. A modified atomic force microscope (AFM) designed for local resistance measurements is used as a nanoindenter. The nanoindentation is performed while measuring continuously the resistance between the conductive tip of the AFM and the conductive layer, which is used as the trigger parameter to stop the indentation. This allows an extremely accurate control of the indentation process. The indented hole is subsequently filled by a metal to create a contact on the underlying layer. We show that nanocontacts in the range of 1 to 10 nm2 can be created with this technique

In this degree dissertation, the contemporary traffic situation in the surroundings of the University of Technology of Vienna is analysed and interpreted. As well the subject mobilitymanagement in general is outlined and best practice examples are pointed out. So subsequently - regarding the analysis and the gained experience - the location UT can be commented on and models and incitements for enhancements relevant for mobility can be compiled. The topic mobilitymanagement is attractive as to break from the stiff and inflexible (immobile) perceptions and opinions and attempt to get under way to a higher level and assail tasks (mobile).10
