    It is indeed a pleasure and a great privilege for me to deliver this memorial lecture as a tribute to Lakshmi Nizamuddin, a woman of rare virtue and formidable stature for whom I had the deepest admiration. Lakshmi Nizamuddin was a woman who was not in any way handicapped by her disability but rather displayed courage, passion and amazing strength to pursue agendas that were of significant socio-economic importance and transformational in their objective. She committed herself to the cause of seeking social equality for the Handicapped and was President of the National Society for Equal Opportunities for the Handicapped, a post she held from 1975 and organized the first ever National Sports for the Handicapped in Bangalore the same year

    Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays

    The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per layer is approximately 5 ns

    Non-Gaussianity in Large Scale Structure and Minkowski Functionals

    Minkowski Functionals (MFs) are topological statistics that have become one of many standard tools used for investigating the statistical properties of cosmological random fields. They have found regular use in studies of departures from Gaussianity in a number of important cosmological scenarios. Important examples include the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), weak lensing studies, 21cm surveys and large scale structure (LSS). To lowest order the MFs depend on three generalised skewness parameters that can be shown to probe the bispectrum with differing weights. Recent studies have advocated the use of a power spectrum associated with the bispectrum, called the skew-spectrum, that has more power to distinguish between various contributions to the bispectrum than the conventional formalism adopted when using the Minkowski Functionals. In this article we review the motivations for studying non-Gaussianity and emphasize the importance of the momentum dependence of higher order correlators in investigating both inflationary and early Universe models as well as analytical models for gravitational instability. We then introduce the skew-spectra, applied to galaxy surveys, as a tool for investigating various models for primordial and gravitationally induced non-Gaussianities. We present analytical expressions for the skew-spectra for the density field and divergence of the velocity field in 3D and for projected surveys as a function of redshift and a smoothing angular scale. A Gaussian window function is assumed throughout this paper. Analytical results are derived for the case of gravitationally induced non-Gaussianity. These results can be generalised to incorporate redshift space effects. This will be useful in probing primordial and gravitationally induced non-Gaussianity from ongoing and future galaxy surveys.Comment: 24 Pages, 12 figure

    TgICMAP1 Is a Novel Microtubule Binding Protein in Toxoplasma gondii

    The microtubule cytoskeleton provides essential structural support for all eukaryotic cells and can be assembled into various higher order structures that perform drastically different functions. Understanding how microtubule-containing assemblies are built in a spatially and temporally controlled manner is therefore fundamental to understanding cell physiology. Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan parasite, contains at least five distinct tubulin-containing structures, the spindle pole, centrioles, cortical microtubules, the conoid, and the intra-conoid microtubules. How these five structurally and functionally distinct sets of tubulin containing structures are constructed and maintained in the same cell is an intriguing problem. Previously, we performed a proteomic analysis of the T. gondii apical complex, a cytoskeletal complex located at the apical end of the parasite that is composed of the conoid, three ring-like structures, and the two short intra-conoid microtubules. Here we report the characterization of one of the proteins identified in that analysis, TgICMAP1. We show that TgICMAP1 is a novel microtubule binding protein that can directly bind to microtubules in vitro and stabilizes microtubules when ectopically expressed in mammalian cells. Interestingly, in T. gondii, TgICMAP1 preferentially binds to the intra-conoid microtubules, providing us the first molecular tool to investigate the intra-conoid microtubule assembly process during daughter construction

    Performance and Operation of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter

    The operation and general performance of the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter using cosmic-ray muons are described. These muons were recorded after the closure of the CMS detector in late 2008. The calorimeter is made of lead tungstate crystals and the overall status of the 75848 channels corresponding to the barrel and endcap detectors is reported. The stability of crucial operational parameters, such as high voltage, temperature and electronic noise, is summarised and the performance of the light monitoring system is presented

    Ernst Mayr called the first part of the evolutionary synthesis the ‘Fisherian synthesis’ on account of the dominant role played by R.A. Fisher in forging a mathematical theory of natural selection together with J.B.S. Haldane and Sewall Wright in the decade 1922–1932. It is here argued that Fisher’s contribution relied on a close reading of Darwin’s work to a much greater extent than did the contributions of Haldane and Wright, that it was synthetic in contrast to their analytic approach and that it was greatly influenced by his friendship with the Darwin family, particularly with Charles’s son Leonard
