    Quality Representation in Multiobjective Programming

    In recent years, emphasis has been placed on generating quality representations of the nondominated set of multiobjective programming problems. This manuscript presents two methods for generating discrete representations with equidistant points for multiobjective programs with solution sets determined by convex cones. The Bilevel Controlled Spacing (BCS) method has a bilevel structure with the lower-level generating the nondominated points and the upper-level controlling the spacing. The Constraint Controlled Spacing (CCS) method is based on the epsilon-constraint method with an additional constraint to control the spacing of generated points. Both methods (under certain assumptions) are proven to produce (weakly) nondominated points. Along the way, several interesting results about obtuse, simplicial cones are also proved. Both the BCS and CCS methods are tested and show promise on a variety of problems: linear, convex, nonconvex (CCS only), two-dimensional, and three-dimensional. Sample Matlab code for two of these examples can be found in the appendices as well as tables containing the generated solution points. The manuscript closes with conclusions and ideas for further research in this field

    A Case Study Analysis of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Design/Build Pilot Projects

    The current economic climate has forced transportation agencies to evaluate opportunities to save money. One possible opportunity lies in Design/Build (DB) delivery. In 2006, with the approval of the Kentucky General Assembly, The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet selected ten projects to be developed through the Design/Build method. DB delivery offers many attainable advantages, the most notable being expedited delivery. The research described herein presents a case study of these DB pilot projects in order to capture lessons learned on the use of the DB delivery method on future projects. In order to determine which projects are suitable for DB delivery, a scorecard was developed based upon factors observed over the course of the DB pilot projects. Another important aspect of the DB pilot projects was their cost, it was believed their costs were much higher than a comparable design/bid/build (DBB) projects. However, after a thorough cost analysis, it was determined that the DB projects cost the Cabinet only an estimated three percent more than comparable DBB projects. The DB pilot projects have had mixed results. Several recommendations are provided that will assist agencies with DB project selection and successful management of DB projects

    Preference-based evolutionary algorithm for airport surface operations

    In addition to time efficiency, minimisation of fuel consumption and related emissions has started to be considered by research on optimisation of airport surface operations as more airports face severe congestion and tightening environmental regulations. Objectives are related to economic cost which can be used as preferences to search for a region of cost efficient and Pareto optimal solutions. A multi-objective evolutionary optimisation framework with preferences is proposed in this paper to solve a complex optimisation problem integrating runway scheduling and airport ground movement problem. The evolutionary search algorithm uses modified crowding distance in the replacement procedure to take into account cost of delay and fuel price. Furthermore, uncertainty inherent in prices is reflected by expressing preferences as an interval. Preference information is used to control the extent of region of interest, which has a beneficial effect on algorithm performance. As a result, the search algorithm can achieve faster convergence and potentially better solutions. A filtering procedure is further proposed to select an evenly distributed subset of Pareto optimal solutions in order to reduce its size and help the decision maker.     Evaluation of bleeding in patients receiving direct oral anticoagulants

As use of these anticoagulants has become favored over the past several years, reported bleeding-related adverse drug events with these agents has increased. In randomized clinical trials, all DOACs have a reduced risk for intracranial hemorrhage, while major and other bleeding results have varied among the agents compared to vitamin K antagonists. We have reviewed the bleeding incidence and severity from randomized and real-world data in patients receiving DOACs in an effort to provide the clinician with a critical review of bleeding and offer practical considerations for avoiding adverse events with these anticoagulants.
