Aesthetics of Deception on the Stage : the Conflict Between Reality and Appearance in John Webster’s the White Devil

John Webster (1580-1634), a highly sophisticated yet equally pessimistic playwright of Jacobean England, depicts a world of corruption in which there is no place for the conventional notions of good and evil. In Webster's tragic world traditional concepts appear with their opposites, and therefore, they create a sort of conflict between reality and appearance. A character or an event seems good in appearance, however, it turns out to be evil in reality; or a character can have the capacity for both good and evil, treachery and loyalty, honesty and dishonesty at the same time in his plays. In other words, the dominant theme in his plays is the fallacy of appearance. In this article, this characteristic of Webster will be examined in his first tragedy, The White Devil with reference to the historical background of the period and to some significant scenes and characters in the play

Historical masonry arch bridges which might be vulnerable to natural disasters are important part of the cultural heritage. Natural disasters, especially earthquakes can inflict damage to these structural systems. This paper aims to investigate a comparison of the effects of near and far-fault ground motions on the seismic response of masonry arch bridges under different earthquakes. Kalender masonry arch bridge which is located in Ergani, Turkey is selected as a numerical model. For this purpose, three-dimensional finite element model of the bridge is generated with ANSYS finite element software with macro modelling approach. Seismic response of the bridge is assessed by means of time-history analyses. The near-fault and far-fault ground motions, which have approximately equal peak ground accelerations, of 1979 Imperial Valley, 1999 Chi-Chi, 1999 Kocaeli and 2010 Darfield earthquakes are considered for the analyses. Comparisons between maximum displacements, maximum and minimum stress, which were acquired from the dynamic analyses of the masonry bridge subjected to each fault effect, are obtained. The study demonstrates that far-fault ground motions are as important as near-fault ground motions and it can be used together with near-fault ground motion for further evaluation of such historical masonry bridges

Welcoming more than 1.7 million refugee and asylum-seeker children, Turkey has put a considerable effort in turning this tragedy into an advantage for these children in terms of their education. Language teaching has played a remarkable role in this effort. Turkey has offered both Turkish and English language courses to these people. Considering the significance of English as a global language for social integration and future studies, this study attempted to investigate young Syrian refugee students’ attitudes toward English language and their reasons to learn English. Moreover, their perspectives were compared with Turkish young learners. Thirty-eight Turkish and 26 Syrian 5th graders (aged 10–11) voluntarily participated in this study. The findings indicated that learning English makes Syrian students happy, whereas Turkish students enjoy the fun activities in English classes. Learning English is considered both relatively easy and important by both groups. Turkish and Syrian young learners’ reasons to learn English differed slightly. Suggestions were provided for refugee young learners to overcome the potential problems regarding language learning. Be to, jų nuostatos lyginamos su turkų moksleivių nuostatomis.

In recent years, earthquakes which occurred March 8, 2010 Elazığ- Kovancılar, June 23, 2011 Elazığ-Maden, September 23, 2011 Tabanlı-Van and November 9, 2011 Edremit-Van earthquakes caused human causalities and large damages with considerably loss of properties in Turkey. Especially masonry buildings in the rural area were damaged seriously due to these earthquakes. In this paper, the earthquake damages of masonry buildings were presented and reasons of damages were investigated

    Side Effects of Glucocorticoids

    Get PDF
Glucocorticoids represent the most important and frequently used class of drugs in the management of many inflammatory and immunologic conditions. Beside these beneficial effects, glucocorticoids are also associated with serious side effects. Cushing’s syndrome, adrenal suppression, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, psychiatric disturbances, and immunosuppression are among the most important side effects of systemic glucocorticoids. These side effects are especially noticeable at high doses for prolonged periods. Even in low-dose therapy, glucocorticoids could lead to serious side effects. The underlying molecular mechanisms of side effects of glucocorticoids are complex, distinct, and frequently only partly understood. This comprehensive article reviews the current knowledge of the most important side effects of glucocorticoids from a clinical perspective

    Earthquakes and Structural Damages

Earthquakes are the most destructive natural hazards throughout human history. Hundreds of thousand people lost their lives and loss of billions of dollars’ properties occurred in these disasters. Occurred medium or high-intensity magnitude earthquakes in last twenty years showed that these loses continue. For reinforced concrete (R/C) buildings, inappropriate design such as soft and weak stories, strong beam–weak column, short column, hammering, unconfined gable wall and in-plane/out-of-plane movement of the walls causes damages. These are the main reasons. In addition to this, low quality of structural materials, poor workmanship, lack of engineering services, and construction with insufficient detailing of the structural elements are the another reasons of damages. Main reasons of masonry building damages in terms of design faults can be shown as heavy earthen roofs, inappropriate detailing of wall to wall connection and wall to roof connection, absence of bond beams, large openings. However, construction of buildings by using local materials with poor workmanship on the base of traditional rules is the other reason of failures for these buildings. In this book chapter, earthquakes and reasons of damages arose from earthquakes for reinforced concrete and masonry structures were presented. In addition to this, appropriate solutions are suggested

A Rare Case of Recurrent Signet Ring Cell Carcinoma Presenting With Thrombocytopenia

DergiPark: 963059tmsjAims: Signet ring cell carcinoma is a rare type of gastric cancer most commonly seen in the stomach. There is a 60% systemic recurrence rate of gastric cancer after curative resection, and it most commonly recurs in the liver, peritoneum, and lungs. Bone metastasis is extremely rare in gastric cancer. We aim to present a rare case of signet ring cell carcinoma with thrombocytopenia as a primary symptom of bone marrow metastasis years after the patient’s primary diagnosis with gastric adenocarcinoma. Case Report: A 52-year-old male patient was admitted to the Medical Oncology Division of Trakya University Hospital with dyspeptic complaints six years ago, whereupon gastroscopy revealed an ulcerated lesion in the antral region of the stomach, and the pathological biopsy revealed adeno- carcinoma. The patient underwent subtotal gastrectomy and lymph node dissection, combined with adjuvant chemoradiotherapy. In the follow-up, a complete blood count revealed thrombocytopenia, and poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma metastasis with a signet ring cell component was demonstrated through imaging studies and pathological examination. Treatment with cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil was initiated after the diagnosis of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 negative, stage 4 gastric adenocarcinoma. The patient showed clinical and laboratory response to the treatment and will continue with the current regimen. Conclusion: In this case, the primary tumor was in the stomach, and he had signs of thrombocytopenia only. When the prognosis of the patient was evaluated, it was thought that there was tumor residue at a cellular or clonal level in the stomach after gastrectomy, or an asymptomatic metastasis present and unnoticed in the bone marrow during the surgical treatment. In conclusion, this case shows that physicians should be alert to the changes in blood parameters in terms of recurrence with bone marrow involvement even if there is no visible recurrence in the patient
