    The first meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Ethics and Sustainability in Fashion, convened by Baroness Lola Young. The meeting explored the contribution that forward thinking UK fashion and textile businesses make to local economies, communities and the environment. Baroness Lola Young, Dr Frances Corner OBE (Head of the London College of Fashion) and Martin Buttle (Supply Chain Manager at MADE-BY) started the meeting with opening remarks and introductions. Dr Kate Fletcher (Reader at the Centre for Sustainable Fashion) expanded on the Close to Home/Made in the UK theme. Five shirt presentations followed from UK manufacturers/brands involved in fashion, textiles and footwear: Christopher Raeburn, Dashing Tweeds, Tender Denim, Ardalanish Isle of Mull Weavers and John Smedley. Ruth Potts (New Economics Foundation) then talked about sustaining local economies and economic well-being. A discussion followed with questions and commentary from the audience, who represented a wide cross section of the industry including high street retailers, press, fashion designers and international organisations. Through the sharing of experiences, personal journeys, discoveries, traditions, technologies and crafts, many of the joys, pains, challenges and opportunities for UK fashion manufacturing where explored. A momentum to keep building. A feeling of positivity and urgency. A debate to be continued. Actions for now and the future we create. There was also a Local Wisdom project underway, to record and celebrate the clothes we wear and the ways in which we wear them. Participants shared the story of their clothing and had their portraits taken wearing it in the Westminster Great Hall

    Hepatitis B among Pacific Islanders in Southern California: how is health information associated with screening and vaccination?

    We measured Hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmission knowledge and self-reported screening/testing behavior among Pacific Islanders (Guamanians/Chamorros, Samoans, and Tongans) in Southern California. We also examined access and trust by Pacific Islanders of varying health information sources. We administered and analyzed survey data (N = 297), using a convenience sample in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego Counties in spring 2009. We found that while Pacific Islander respondents reported that they receive health information from physicians, and largely trust this source, information from and trust in physicians were not statistically significant in explaining whether respondents sought HBV screening or vaccination

    As co-secretariat for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Ethics & Sustainability in Fashion, Dilys Williams and Centre for Sustainable Fashion provided briefing notes for The Dinner Hour Debate, where Baroness Lola Young posed a question to the Speaker of the House of Lords. The Design for Sustainability Educators Network took the debate about sustainability in fashion to the House of Lords. The Dinner Hour Debate saw parliamentarians pose the question to UK government: What is being done to promote sustainability and ethics in fashion? The debate was broadcast on the BBC Parliament channel, and full transcripts are available on parliament Hansard text online. This event was open to the public and formed part of the APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) on Sustainability & Ethics in Fashion, secretariat managed by Centre for Sustainable Fashion

    Identification of microRNAs specific for epithelial cell adhesion molecule-positive tumor cells in hepatocellular carcinoma: HEPATOLOGY, Vol. XX, No. X, 2015

    Therapies that target cancer stem cells (CSCs) hold promise in eliminating cancer burden. However, normal stem cells are likely to be targeted due to their similarities to CSCs. It is established that EpCAM is a biomarker for normal hepatic stem cells and EpCAM+AFP+ hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells have enriched hepatic CSCs. We sought to determine if specific miRNAs exist in hepatic CSCs that are not expressed in normal hepatic stem cells. We performed a pair-wised comparison of the miRNA transcriptome of EpCAM+ and corresponding EpCAM− cells isolated from two primary HCC specimens, as well as from two fetal livers and three healthy adult liver donors via small RNA deep sequencing. We found that miR-150, miR-155 and miR-223 were preferentially highly expressed in EpCAM+ HCC cells, which was further validated. Their gene surrogates, identified using miRNA and mRNA profiling in a cohort of 292 HCC patients, were associated with patient prognosis. We further demonstrated that miR-155 was highly expressed in EpCAM+ HCC cells compared to corresponding EpCAM− HCC cells, fetal livers with enriched normal hepatic progenitors, and normal adult livers with enriched mature hepatocytes. Suppressing miR-155 resulted in a decreased EpCAM+ fraction in HCC cells and reduced HCC cell colony formation, migration and invasion in vitro. The reduced levels of identified miR-155 targets predicted the shortened overall survival and time to recurrence of HCC patients. Conclusion: MiR-155 was highly elevated in EpCAM+ HCC cells and might serve as a molecular target to eradicate the EpCAM+ CSC population in human HCCs

    Pattern of Relapse and Treatment Response in WNT- Activated Medulloblastoma

    Over the past decade, wingless-activated (WNT) medulloblastoma has been identified as a candidate for therapy de-escalation based on excellent survival; however, a paucity of relapses has precluded additional analyses of markers of relapse. To address this gap in knowledge, an international cohort of 93 molecularly confirmed WNT MB was assembled, where 5-year progression-free survival is 0.84 (95%, 0.763-0.925) with 15 relapsed individuals identified. Maintenance chemotherapy is identified as a strong predictor of relapse, with individuals receiving high doses of cyclophosphamide or ifosphamide having only one very late molecularly confirmed relapse (p = 0.032). The anatomical location of recurrence is metastatic in 12 of 15 relapses, with 8 of 12 metastatic relapses in the lateral ventricles. Maintenance chemotherapy, specifically cumulative cyclophosphamide doses, is a significant predictor of relapse across WNT MB. Future efforts to de-escalate therapy need to carefully consider not only the radiation dose but also the chemotherapy regimen and the propensity for metastatic relapses

    Long-term thermal sensitivity of Earth’s tropical forests

    The sensitivity of tropical forest carbon to climate is a key uncertainty in predicting global climate change. Although short-term drying and warming are known to affect forests, it is unknown if such effects translate into long-term responses. Here, we analyze 590 permanent plots measured across the tropics to derive the equilibrium climate controls on forest carbon. Maximum temperature is the most important predictor of aboveground biomass (−9.1 megagrams of carbon per hectare per degree Celsius), primarily by reducing woody productivity, and has a greater impact per °C in the hottest forests (>32.2°C). Our results nevertheless reveal greater thermal resilience than observations of short-term variation imply. To realize the long-term climate adaptation potential of tropical forests requires both protecting them and stabilizing Earth’s climate

    Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a classical autoimmune liver disease for which effective immunomodulatory therapy is lacking. Here we perform meta-analyses of discovery data sets from genome-wide association studies of European subjects (n=2,764 cases and 10,475 controls) followed by validation genotyping in an independent cohort (n=3,716 cases and 4,261 controls). We discover and validate six previously unknown risk loci for PBC (Pcombined<5 × 10(-8)) and used pathway analysis to identify JAK-STAT/IL12/IL27 signalling and cytokine-cytokine pathways, for which relevant therapies exist
