Herbicide-resistant weeds : from research and knowledge to future needs
Synthetic herbicides have been used globally to control weeds in major field crops. This has imposed a strong selection for any trait that enables plant populations to survive and reproduce in the presence of the herbicide. Herbicide resistance in weeds must be minimized because it is a major limiting factor to food security in global agriculture. This represents a huge challenge that will require great research efforts to develop control strategies as alternatives to the dominant and almost exclusive practice of weed control by herbicides. Weed scientists, plant ecologists and evolutionary biologists should join forces and work towards an improved and more integrated understanding of resistance across all scales. This approach will likely facilitate the design of innovative solutions to the global herbicide resistance challenge
The employee as 'Dish of the Dayâ:human resource management and the ethics of consumption
This article examines the ethical implications of the growing integration of consumption into the heart of the employment relationship. Human resource management (HRM) practices increasingly draw upon the values and practices of consumption, constructing employees as the âconsumersâ of âcafeteria-styleâ benefits and development opportunities. However, at the same time employees are expected to market themselves as items to be consumed on a corporate menu. In relation to this simultaneous position of consumer/consumed, the employee is expected to actively engage in the commodification of themselves, performing an appropriate organizational identity as a necessary part of being a successful employee. This article argues that the relationship between HRM and the simultaneously consuming/consumed employee affects the conditions of possibility for ethical relations within organizational life. It is argued that the underlying âethosâ for the integration of consumption values into HRM practices encourages a self-reflecting, self-absorbed subject, drawing upon a narrow view of individualised autonomy and choice. Referring to Levinasâ perspective that the primary ethical relation is that of responsibility and openness to the Other, it is concluded that these HRM practices affect the possibility for ethical being
Star Formation Rate Indicators in Wide-Field Infrared Survey Preliminary Release
With the goal of investigating the degree to which theMIR luminosity in
theWidefield Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) traces the SFR, we analyze 3.4,
4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m data in a sample of {\guillemotright} 140,000
star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions covering a wide range in
metallicity 7.66 < 12 + log(O/H) < 9.46, with redshift z < 0.4. These
star-forming galaxies or star-forming regions are selected by matching the WISE
Preliminary Release Catalog with the star-forming galaxy Catalog in SDSS DR8
provided by JHU/MPA 1.We study the relationship between the luminosity at 3.4,
4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m from WISE and H\alpha luminosity in SDSS DR8. From these
comparisons, we derive reference SFR indicators for use in our analysis. Linear
correlations between SFR and the 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m luminosity are
found, and calibrations of SFRs based on L(3.4), L(4.6), L(12) and L(22) are
proposed. The calibrations hold for galaxies with verified spectral
observations. The dispersion in the relation between 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 {\mu}m
luminosity and SFR relates to the galaxy's properties, such as 4000 {\deg}A

Education policy as an act of white supremacy: whiteness, critical race theory and education reform
The paper presents an empirical analysis of education policy in England that is informed by recent developments in US critical theory. In particular, I draw on âwhiteness studiesâ and the application of Critical Race Theory (CRT). These perspectives offer a new and radical way of conceptualising the role of racism in education. Although the US literature has paid little or no regard to issues outside North America, I argue that a similar understanding of racism (as a multifaceted, deeply embedded, often taken-for-granted aspect of power relations) lies at the heart of recent attempts to understand institutional racism in the UK. Having set out the conceptual terrain in the first half of the paper, I then apply this approach to recent changes in the English education system to reveal the central role accorded the defence (and extension) of race inequity. Finally, the paper touches on the question of racism and intentionality: although race inequity may not be a planned and deliberate goal of education policy neither is it accidental. The patterning of racial advantage and inequity is structured in domination and its continuation represents a form of tacit intentionality on the part of white powerholders and policy makers. It is in this sense that education policy is an act of white supremacy. Following others in the CRT tradition, therefore, the paperâs analysis concludes that the most dangerous form of âwhite supremacyâ is not the obvious and extreme fascistic posturing of small neonazi groups, but rather the taken-for-granted routine privileging of white interests that goes unremarked in the political mainstream
Herschel-ATLAS: Multi-wavelength SEDs and physical properties of 250 micron-selected galaxies at z < 0.5
We present a pan-chromatic analysis of an unprecedented sample of 1402 250
micron-selected galaxies at z < 0.5 (mean z = 0.24) from the Herschel-ATLAS
survey. We complement our Herschel 100-500 micron data with UV-K-band
photometry from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and apply the
MAGPHYS energy-balance technique to produce pan-chromatic SEDs for a
representative sample of 250 micron selected galaxies spanning the most recent
5 Gyr of cosmic history. We derive estimates of physical parameters, including
star formation rates, stellar masses, dust masses and infrared luminosities.
The typical H-ATLAS galaxy at z < 0.5 has a far-infrared luminosity in the
range 10^10 - 10^12 Lsolar (SFR: 1-50 Msolar/yr) thus is broadly representative
of normal star forming galaxies over this redshift range. We show that 250
micron-selected galaxies contain a larger mass of dust at a given infra-red
luminosity or star formation rate than previous samples selected at 60 micron
from IRAS. We derive typical SEDs for H-ATLAS galaxies, and show that the
emergent SED shape is most sensitive to specific star formation rate. The
optical-UV SEDs also become more reddened due to dust at higher redshifts. Our
template SEDs are significantly cooler than existing infra-red templates. They
may therefore be most appropriate for inferring total IR luminosities from
moderate redshift submillimetre selected samples and for inclusion in models of
the lower redshift submillimetre galaxy populations.Comment: 26 pages, 24 figures, Accepted by MNRA
A 22-year Southern Sky Survey for Transient and Variable Radio Sources using the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope
We describe a 22-year survey for variable and transient radio sources,
performed with archival images taken with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis
Telescope (MOST). This survey covers 2775 \unit{deg^2} of the sky south of
at an observing frequency of 843 MHz, an angular
resolution of 45 \times 45 \csc | \delta| \unit{arcsec^2} and a sensitivity
of 5 \sigma \geq 14 \unit{mJy beam^{-1}}. We describe a technique to
compensate for image gain error, along with statistical techniques to check and
classify variability in a population of light curves, with applicability to any
image-based radio variability survey. Among radio light curves for almost 30000
sources, we present 53 highly variable sources and 15 transient sources. Only 3
of the transient sources, and none of the variable sources have been previously
identified as transient or variable. Many of our variable sources are suspected
scintillating Active Galactic Nuclei. We have identified three variable sources
and one transient source that are likely to be associated with star forming
galaxies at , but whose implied luminosity is higher than the
most luminous known radio supernova (SN1979C) by an order of magnitude. We also

DustPedia: Multiwavelength photometry and imagery of 875 nearby galaxies in 42 ultraviolet-microwave bands
Aims. The DustPedia project is capitalising on the legacy of the Herschel Space Observatory, using cutting-edge modelling techniques to study dust in the 875 DustPedia galaxies â representing the vast majority of extended galaxies within 3000âkmâs-1 that were observed by Herschel. This work requires a database of multiwavelength imagery and photometry that greatly exceeds the scope (in terms of wavelength coverage and number of galaxies) of any previous local-Universe survey.
Methods. We constructed a database containing our own custom Herschel reductions, along with standardised archival observations from GALEX, SDSS, DSS, 2MASS, WISE, Spitzer, and Planck. Using these data, we performed consistent aperture-matched photometry, which we combined with external supplementary photometry from IRAS and Planck.
Results. We present our multiwavelength imagery and photometry across 42 UV-microwave bands for the 875 DustPedia galaxies. Our aperture-matched photometry, combined with the external supplementary photometry, represents a total of 21â857 photometric measurements. A typical DustPedia galaxy has multiwavelength photometry spanning 25 bands. We also present the Comprehensive & Adaptable Aperture Photometry Routine (CAAPR), the pipeline we developed to carry out our aperture-matched photometry. CAAPR is designed to produce consistent photometry for the enormous range of galaxy and observation types in our data. In particular, CAAPR is able to determine robust cross-compatible uncertainties, thanks to a novel method for reliably extrapolating the aperture noise for observations that cover a very limited amount of background. Juvenile root vigour improves phosphorus use efficiency of potato
Aims
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) has a large phosphorus (P)-fertiliser requirement. This is thought to be due to its inability to acquire P effectively from the soil. This work tested the hypothesis that early proliferation of its root system would enhance P acquisition, accelerate canopy development, and enable greater yields.
Methods
Six years of field experiments characterised the relationships between (1) leaf P concentration ([P]leaf), tuber yield, and tuber P concentration ([P]tuber) among 27 Tuberosum, 35 Phureja and 4 Diploid Hybrid genotypes and (2) juvenile root vigour, P acquisition and tuber yield among eight Tuberosum genotypes selected for contrasting responses to P-fertiliser.
Results
Substantial genetic variation was observed in tuber yield, [P]leaf and [P]tuber. There was a strong positive relationship between tuber yields and P acquisition among genotypes, whether grown with or without P-fertiliser. Juvenile root vigour was correlated with accelerated canopy development and both greater P acquisition and tuber biomass accumulation early in the season. However, the latter relationships became weaker during the season.
Conclusions
Increased juvenile root vigour accelerated P acquisition and initial canopy cover and, thereby, increased tuber yields. Juvenile root vigour is a heritable trait and can be selected to improve P-fertiliser use efficiency of potato
PTF10fqs: A Luminous Red Nova in the Spiral Galaxy Messier 99
The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) is systematically charting the optical
transient and variable sky. A primary science driver of PTF is building a
complete inventory of transients in the local Universe (distance less than 200
Mpc). Here, we report the discovery of PTF10fqs, a transient in the luminosity
"gap" between novae and supernovae. Located on a spiral arm of Messier 99, PTF
10fqs has a peak luminosity of Mr = -12.3, red color (g-r = 1.0) and is slowly
evolving (decayed by 1 mag in 68 days). It has a spectrum dominated by
intermediate-width H (930 km/s) and narrow calcium emission lines. The
explosion signature (the light curve and spectra) is overall similar to thatof
M85OT2006-1, SN2008S, and NGC300OT. The origin of these events is shrouded in
mystery and controversy (and in some cases, in dust). PTF10fqs shows some
evidence of a broad feature (around 8600A) that may suggest very large
velocities (10,000 km/s) in this explosion. Ongoing surveys can be expected to
find a few such events per year. Sensitive spectroscopy, infrared monitoring
and statistics (e.g. disk versus bulge) will eventually make it possible for
astronomers to unravel the nature of these mysterious explosions.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, Replaced with published versio
