    Las inundaciones en Galicia tienen un carácter particular. Los factores que intervienen en su desarrollo son variados pero, en general, están más asociadas a eventos derivados de un largo período de abundante precipitación, propios de las condiciones climáticas en que se inscribe\ud la región, que a aquellos otros, menos frecuentes, de corta duradón y elevada intensidad. Por otra parte, al tratarse de un territorio en donde la casi totalidad de sus principales cursos fluviales se encuentran regularizados por embalses para el aprovechamiento hidroeléctrico, los efectos de estas crecidas sólo se dejan sentir en los pequeños cursos que carecen de dicho aprovechamiento, por lo que las consecuencias hidrológicas son limitadas en el espacio y en el tiempo. Finalmente, la ausencia de infomnación hidrométríca de base en estos pequeños cursos fluviales, nos ha llevado a presentar simulaciones de eventos en una de las cuencas más afectadas por las tradicionales inundaciones como es la del río Sar, en la comarca de A Mahía, que se extiende entre la ciudad de Santiago de Compostela y el núcleo urbano de Padrón, en el fondo de la ría de Arousa.The inundations in Galicia have a particular character.     Combinatorial targeting and discovery of ligand-receptors in organelles of mammalian cells

    Phage display screening allows the study of functional protein–protein interactions at the cell surface, but investigating intracellular organelles remains a challenge. Here we introduce internalizing-phage libraries to identify clones that enter mammalian cells through a receptor-independent mechanism and target-specific organelles as a tool to select ligand peptides and identify their intracellular receptors. We demonstrate that penetratin, an antennapedia-derived peptide, can be displayed on the phage envelope and mediate receptor-independent uptake of internalizing phage into cells. We also show that an internalizing-phage construct displaying an established mitochondria-specific localization signal targets mitochondria, and that an internalizing-phage random peptide library selects for peptide motifs that localize to different intracellular compartments. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that one such peptide, if chemically fused to penetratin, is internalized receptor-independently, localizes to mitochondria, and promotes cell death. This combinatorial platform technology has potential applications in cell biology and drug development

    Effect of the ultrastructure of chitosan nanoparticles in colloidal stability, quorum quenching and antibacterial activities

    We have fabricated two types of crosslinked chitosan-based nanoparticles (NPs), namely (1) ionically crosslinked with tripolyphosphate (TPP), designated as IC-NPs and (2) dually co-crosslinked (ionically and covalently with TPP and genipin, respectively) termed CC-NPs. The two types of NPs were physichochemically characterized by means of DLS-NIBS, synchrotron SAXS and M3-PALS (zeta potential). First, we found that covalent co-crosslinking of ionically pre-crosslinked nanoparticles yielded monodisperse CC-NPs in the size range of ∼200 nm, whereas the parental IC-NPs remained highly polydisperse. While both types of chitosan nanoparticles displayed a core-shell structure, as determined by synchrotron SAXS, only the structure of CC-NPs remained stable at long incubation times. This enhanced structural robustness of CC-NPs was likely responsible of their superior colloidal stability even in biological medium. Second, we explored the antimicrobial and quorum sensing inhibition activity of both types of nanoparticles. We found that CC-NPs had lower long-term toxicity than IC-NPs. In contrast, sub-lethal doses of IC-NPs consistently displayed higher levels of quorum quenching activity than CC-NPs. Thus, this work underscores the influence of the NP’s ultrastructure on their colloidal and biological properties. While the cellular and molecular mechanisms at play are yet to be fully elucidated, our results broaden the spectrum of use of chitosan-based nanobiomaterialsin the development of antibiotic-free approaches against Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria

    Precise measurement of the W-boson mass with the CDF II detector

    We have measured the W-boson mass MW using data corresponding to 2.2/fb of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Samples consisting of 470126 W->enu candidates and 624708 W->munu candidates yield the measurement MW = 80387 +- 12 (stat) +- 15 (syst) = 80387 +- 19 MeV. This is the most precise measurement of the W-boson mass to date and significantly exceeds the precision of all previous measurements combined

    Search for Kaluza-Klein Graviton Emission in ppˉp\bar{p} Collisions at s=1.8\sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV using the Missing Energy Signature

    We report on a search for direct Kaluza-Klein graviton production in a data sample of 84 pb1{pb}^{-1} of \ppb collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We investigate the final state of large missing transverse energy and one or two high energy jets. We compare the data with the predictions from a 3+1+n3+1+n-dimensional Kaluza-Klein scenario in which gravity becomes strong at the TeV scale. At 95% confidence level (C.L.) for nn=2, 4, and 6 we exclude an effective Planck scale below 1.0, 0.77, and 0.71 TeV, respectively.Comment: Submitted to PRL, 7 pages 4 figures/Revision includes 5 figure

    Predictors of inhospital mortality and re-hospitalization in older adults with community-acquired pneumonia: a prospective cohort study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A better understanding of potentially modifiable predictors of in-hospital mortality and re-admission to the hospital following discharge may help to improve management of community-acquired pneumonia in older adults. We aimed to assess the associations of potentially modifiable factors with mortality and re-hospitalization in older adults hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A prospective cohort study was conducted from July 2003 to April 2005 in two Canadian cities. Patients aged 65 years or older hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia were followed up for up to 30 days from initial hospitalization for mortality and these patients who were discharged alive within 30 days of initial hospitalization were followed up to 90 days of initial hospitalization for re-hospitalization. Separate logistic regression analyses were performed identify the predictors of mortality and re-hospitalization.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 717 enrolled patients hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia, 49 (6.8%) died within 30 days of hospital admission. Among these patients, 526 were discharged alive within 30 days of hospitalization of whom 58 (11.2%) were re-hospitalized within 90 days of initial hospitalization. History of hip fracture (odds ratio (OR) = 4.00, 95% confidence interval (CI) = (1.46, 10.96), P = .007), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR = 2.31, 95% CI = (1.18, 4.50), P = .014), cerebrovascular disease (OR = 2.11, 95% CI = (1.03, 4.31), P = .040) were associated with mortality. Male sex (OR = 2.35, 95% CI = (1.13, 4.85), P = .022) was associated with re-hospitalization while vitamin E supplementation was protective (OR = 0.37 (0.16, 0.90), P = .028). Lower socioeconomic status, prior influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations, appropriate antibiotic prescription upon admission, and lower nutrition risk were not significantly associated with mortality or re-hospitalization.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Chronic comorbidities appear to be the most important predictors of death and re-hospitalization in older adults hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia while vitamin E supplementation was protective.</p

    Measurement of the average time-integrated mixing probability of b-flavored hadrons produced at the Tevatron

    We have measured the number of like-sign (LS) and opposite-sign (OS) lepton pairs arising from double semileptonic decays of bb and bˉ\bar{b}-hadrons, pair-produced at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data samples were collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) during the 1992-1995 collider run by triggering on the existence of μμ\mu \mu and eμe \mu candidates in an event. The observed ratio of LS to OS dileptons leads to a measurement of the average time-integrated mixing probability of all produced bb-flavored hadrons which decay weakly, χˉ=0.152±0.007\bar{\chi} = 0.152 \pm 0.007 (stat.) ±0.011\pm 0.011 (syst.), that is significantly larger than the world average χˉ=0.118±0.005\bar{\chi} = 0.118 \pm 0.005.Comment: 47 pages, 10 figures, 15 tables Submitted to Phys.     Performance of CMS muon reconstruction in pp collision events at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

    The performance of muon reconstruction, identification, and triggering in CMS has been studied using 40 inverse picobarns of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV at the LHC in 2010. A few benchmark sets of selection criteria covering a wide range of physics analysis needs have been examined. For all considered selections, the efficiency to reconstruct and identify a muon with a transverse momentum pT larger than a few GeV is above 95% over the whole region of pseudorapidity covered by the CMS muon system, abs(eta) < 2.4, while the probability to misidentify a hadron as a muon is well below 1%. The efficiency to trigger on single muons with pT above a few GeV is higher than 90% over the full eta range, and typically substantially better. The overall momentum scale is measured to a precision of 0.2% with muons from Z decays. The transverse momentum resolution varies from 1% to 6% depending on pseudorapidity for muons with pT below 100 GeV and, using cosmic rays, it is shown to be better than 10% in the central region up to pT = 1 TeV. Observed distributions of all quantities are well reproduced by the Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: Replaced with published version. Added journal reference and DO
