Generating Neutrino Mass in the 331 Model
A mechanism for generating small tree-level Majorana mass for neutrinos is
implemented in the 331 Model. No additional fermions or scalars need to be

Adipose TriGlyceride Lipase (ATGL) and Hormone-Sensitive Lipase (HSL) protein expression is decreased in the obese insulin resistant state
International audienceAIM/HYPOTHESIS: Obesity is associated with increased triacylglycerol (TAG) storage in adipose tissue and insulin resistance. The mobilization of stored TAG is mediated by hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and the recently discovered adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL). The aim of the present study was to examine whether ATGL and HSL mRNA and protein expression are altered in insulin-resistant conditions. In addition, we investigated whether a possible impaired expression could be reversed by a period of weight reduction. METHODS: Adipose tissue biopsies were taken from obese subjects (n = 44) with a wide range of insulin resistance, before and just after a 10-wk hypocaloric diet. ATGL and HSL protein and mRNA expression was determined by Western blot and quantitative RT-PCR, respectively. RESULTS: Fasting insulin levels and the degree of insulin resistance (using the homeostasis model assessment index for insulin resistance) were negatively correlated with ATGL and HSL protein expression, independent of age, gender, fat cell size, and body composition. Both mRNA and protein levels of ATGL and HSL were reduced in insulin-resistant compared with insulin-sensitive subjects (P < 0.05). Weight reduction significantly decreased ATGL and HSL mRNA and protein expression. A positive correlation between the decrease in leptin and the decrease in ATGL protein level after weight reduction was observed. Finally, ATGL and HSL mRNA and protein levels seem to be highly correlated, indicating a tight coregulation and transcriptional control. CONCLUSIONS: In obese subjects, insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia are strongly associated with ATGL and HSL mRNA and protein expression, independent of fat mass. Data on weight reduction indicated that also other factors (e.g. leptin) relate to ATGL and HSL protein expression
Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations and New Physics
We study the robustness of the determination of the neutrino masses and
mixing from the analysis of atmospheric and K2K data under the presence of
different forms of phenomenologically allowed new physics in the nu_mu--nu_tau
sector. We focus on vector and tensor-like new physics interactions which allow
us to treat, in a model independent way, effects due to the violation of the
equivalence principle, violations of the Lorentz invariance both CPT conserving
and CPT violating, non-universal couplings to a torsion field and non-standard
neutrino interactions with matter. We perform a global analysis of the full
atmospheric data from SKI together with long baseline K2K data in the presence
of nu_mu -> nu_tau transitions driven by neutrino masses and mixing together
with sub-dominant effects due to these forms of new physics. We show that
within the present degree of experimental precision, the extracted values of
masses and mixing are robust under those effects and we derive the upper bounds

Oscillation enhanced search for new interaction with neutrinos
We discuss the measurement of new physics in long baseline neutrino
oscillation experiments. Through the neutrino oscillation, the probability to
detect the new physics effects such as flavor violation is enhanced by the
interference with the weak interaction. We carefully explain the situations
that the interference can take place. Assuming a neutrino factory and an
upgraded conventional beam, we estimate the feasibility to observe new physics
numerically and point out that we can search new interactions using some
channels, for example , in these experiments. We also
discuss several models which induce the effective interactions interfering with
the weak interaction, and show that some new physics effects are large enough
to be observed in the oscillation enhanced way.Comment: 25 pages, 20 figure
Anisotropic flow of charged hadrons, pions and (anti-)protons measured at high transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
The elliptic, , triangular, , and quadrangular, , azimuthal
anisotropic flow coefficients are measured for unidentified charged particles,
pions and (anti-)protons in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Results obtained with the
event plane and four-particle cumulant methods are reported for the
pseudo-rapidity range at different collision centralities and as a
function of transverse momentum, , out to GeV/.
The observed non-zero elliptic and triangular flow depends only weakly on
transverse momentum for GeV/. The small dependence
of the difference between elliptic flow results obtained from the event plane
and four-particle cumulant methods suggests a common origin of flow
fluctuations up to GeV/. The magnitude of the (anti-)proton
elliptic and triangular flow is larger than that of pions out to at least
GeV/ indicating that the particle type dependence persists out

Centrality dependence of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV
The inclusive transverse momentum () distributions of primary
charged particles are measured in the pseudo-rapidity range as a
function of event centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at
TeV with ALICE at the LHC. The data are presented in the range
GeV/ for nine centrality intervals from 70-80% to 0-5%.
The Pb-Pb spectra are presented in terms of the nuclear modification factor
using a pp reference spectrum measured at the same collision
energy. We observe that the suppression of high- particles strongly
depends on event centrality. In central collisions (0-5%) the yield is most
suppressed with at -7 GeV/. Above
GeV/, there is a significant rise in the nuclear modification
factor, which reaches for GeV/. In
peripheral collisions (70-80%), the suppression is weaker with almost independently of . The measured nuclear
