An Analysis of 3D Simulation of SI Combustion with an Improved Version of the Kiva 3V Code: Numerical Formulation and Experimental Validation
The correct simulation of combustion process allows to better face several SI engines design problems, not only for innovative mixture formation concepts (stratified or
ultra-lean charge), but for traditional homogeneous mixture as well. Even though many commercial codes are able to describe the complex 3-D non reacting fluid dynamics in ICE, the simulation of high turbulent flame
propagation does not seem to be a completely solved problem yet.
In this work a comparison between two different turbulent combustion models (a characteristic time based one by Abraham and Reitz [2, 15, 16] and a flamelet based one by Cant and AbuOrf [4, 20]) has been performed using KIVA-3V code to assess simulation reliability. Models predictive capabilities have been tested with reference to specific data acquired at the engine test bench of Tor Vergata Mechanical Engineering Department on a Fiat Punto 1242 cc 8 valves SI engine over a wide range of operating conditions.
A generally good agreement has been observed
between experimental and numerical results obtained by using both the combustion models. In addition it can be noticed that, thanks to a more physical description of the local turbulent flame characteristics, Cant model seems to exhibit more predicting reliability in the whole engine operating field
Unveiling entrepreneurial action: A meta-synthesis on effectuation and bricolage
Although bricolage and effectuation are the most cited theoretical approaches in the field of entrepreneurship, their research remain inconclusive with regard to their respective antecedents. In this study, we used meta-synthesis as a way to push the boundaries of both approaches and to reconcile the rich and fragmented evidence provided by case studies. This study extends the current theory by demonstrating which contextual antecedents and individual attributes were manifested in practice and explaining how they relate to actions of bricolage and effectuation, broadening our understanding of the issues of how and why they prevail, erstwhile called for in the literature.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Performance Evaluation of Microbial Fuel Cells Fed by Solid Organic Waste: Parametric Comparison between Three Generations
Abstract In this paper, the results of three generations of reactors for the direct conversion of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) in electrical energy are presented. The different generations corresponds to the prototype realized in the Energy Lab of the University of Naples "Parthenope" and have been monitored along a period of over three years in terms of polarization and power curves, in order to assess the feasibility of Microbial Fuel Cell as a promising source for future, sustainable energy generation

Search for lepton-flavour-violating decays of Higgs-like bosons.
A search is presented for a Higgs-like boson with mass in the range 45 to 195 GeV/c2 decaying into a muon and a tau lepton. The dataset consists of proton-proton interactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV , collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb-1 . The tau leptons are reconstructed in both leptonic and hadronic decay channels. An upper limit on the production cross-section multiplied by the branching fraction at 95% confidence level is set and ranges from 22 pb for a boson mass of 45 GeV/c2 to 4 pb for a mass of 195 GeV/c2
Non-homologous end-joining pathway associated with occurrence of myocardial infarction: gene set analysis of genome-wide association study data
<p>Purpose: DNA repair deficiencies have been postulated to play a role in the development and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The hypothesis is that DNA damage accumulating with age may induce cell death, which promotes formation of unstable plaques. Defects in DNA repair mechanisms may therefore increase the risk of CVD events. We examined whether the joints effect of common genetic variants in 5 DNA repair pathways may influence the risk of CVD events.</p>
<p>Methods: The PLINK set-based test was used to examine the association to myocardial infarction (MI) of the DNA repair pathway in GWAS data of 866 subjects of the GENetic DEterminants of Restenosis (GENDER) study and 5,244 subjects of the PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER) study. We included the main DNA repair pathways (base excision repair, nucleotide excision repair, mismatch repair, homologous recombination and non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ)) in the analysis.</p>
<p>Results: The NHEJ pathway was associated with the occurrence of MI in both GENDER (P = 0.0083) and PROSPER (P = 0.014). This association was mainly driven by genetic variation in the MRE11A gene (PGENDER = 0.0001 and PPROSPER = 0.002). The homologous recombination pathway was associated with MI in GENDER only (P = 0.011), for the other pathways no associations were observed.</p>
<p>Conclusion: This is the first study analyzing the joint effect of common genetic variation in DNA repair pathways and the risk of CVD events, demonstrating an association between the NHEJ pathway and MI in 2 different cohorts.</p>
HBeAg Levels Vary across the Different Stages of HBV Infection According to the Extent of Immunological Pressure and Are Associated with Therapeutic Outcome in the Setting of Immunosuppression-Driven HBV Reactivation
HBeAg is a marker of HBV-activity, and HBeAg-loss predicts a favorable clinical outcome. Here, we characterize HBeAg-levels across different phases of HBV infection, their correlation with virological/biochemical markers and the virological response to anti-HBV therapy. Quantitative HBeAg (qHBeAg, DiaSorin) is assessed in 101 HBeAg+ patients: 20 with acute-infection, 20 with chronic infection, 32 with chronic hepatitis and 29 with immunosuppression-driven HBV-reactivation (HBV-R). A total of 15/29 patients with HBV-R are monitored for > 12 months after starting TDF/ETV. qHBeAg is higher in immunosuppression-driven HBV-R (median[IQR]:930[206-1945]PEIU/mL) and declines in chronic hepatitis (481[28-1393]PEIU/mL, p = 0.03), suggesting HBeAg production, modulated by the extent of immunological pressure. This is reinforced by the negative correlation between qHBeAg and ALT in acute infection (Rho = -0.66, p = 0.006) and chronic hepatitis (Rho = -0.35; p = 0.05). Interestingly, qHBeAg strongly and positively correlates with qHBsAg across the study groups, suggesting cccDNA as a major source of both proteins in the setting of HBeAg positivity (with limited contribution of integrated HBV-DNA to HBsAg production). Focusing on 15 patients with HBV-R starting TDF/ETV, virological suppression and HBeAg-loss are achieved in 60% and 53.3%. Notably, the combination of qHBeAg > 2000 PEIU/mL + qHBsAg > 52,000 IU/mL at HBV-R is the only factor predicting no HBeAg loss (HBeAg loss: 0% with vs. 72.7% without qHBeAg > 2000 PEIU/mL + qHBsAg > 52,000 IU/mL, p = 0.03). In conclusion, qHBeAg varies over the natural course of HBV infection, according to the extent of immunological pressure. In the setting of HBV-R, qHBeAg could be useful in predicting the treatment response under immunosuppression
Observation of an Excited Bc+ State
Using pp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb-1 recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of s=7, 8, and 13 TeV, the observation of an excited Bc+ state in the Bc+Ï+Ï- invariant-mass spectrum is reported. The observed peak has a mass of 6841.2±0.6(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, where the last uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the Bc+ mass. It is consistent with expectations of the Bcâ(2S31)+ state reconstructed without the low-energy photon from the Bcâ(1S31)+âBc+Îł decay following Bcâ(2S31)+âBcâ(1S31)+Ï+Ï-. A second state is seen with a global (local) statistical significance of 2.2Ï (3.2Ï) and a mass of 6872.1±1.3(stat)±0.1(syst)±0.8(Bc+) MeV/c2, and is consistent with the Bc(2S10)+ state. These mass measurements are the most precise to date
Bose-Einstein correlations of same-sign charged pions in the forward region in pp collisions at âs=7 TeV
Bose-Einstein correlations of same-sign charged pions, produced in protonproton collisions at a 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy, are studied using a data sample collected
by the LHCb experiment. The signature for Bose-Einstein correlations is observed in the
form of an enhancement of pairs of like-sign charged pions with small four-momentum
difference squared. The charged-particle multiplicity dependence of the Bose-Einstein correlation parameters describing the correlation strength and the size of the emitting source
is investigated, determining both the correlation radius and the chaoticity parameter. The
measured correlation radius is found to increase as a function of increasing charged-particle
multiplicity, while the chaoticity parameter is seen to decreas
