    Measurement of the W-pair Production Cross-section and W Branching Ratios at s\sqrt{s}=205 and 207 GeV

    The cross-section for the process e+e-->W+W- was measured with the data sample collected by DELPHI at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of about 209 pb^-1. The branching ratios of the W decay were also measured; from them the value of |Vcs| was extracted. The results are compared with the most recent calculations in the frame of the Standard Model

    Fluorescence kinetics of chloroplasts as indicators of disorders in the photosynthetic system I. Comparative studies with greening leaves of Vitis and Hordeum

    Kinetics of both delayed fluorescence (luminescence) and prompt fluorescence of chlorophyll are used to characterize photosynthetic activity in leaf tissues. In a first attempt the greening process in etiolated Vitis cuttings and Hordeum seedlings was studied. Data sampling and processing, including averaging of the kinetics, was carried out by means of a microcomputer. Parallel to the light-induced development of photosynthetic activity the kinetic changes (i. e. luminescence decrease, fluorescence rise and decrease) became more prominent and transitory secondary peaks appeared. For both plants the succession of the kinetic characteristics was the same; it only differed in the time of appearance. The kinetics are discussed according to interpretations given in literature. The method is proposed as a tool to quickly characterize certain damages of the photosynthetic system in different plants

    CP asymmetry in BϕKSB \to \phi K_S in a general two-Higgs-doublet model with fourth-generation quarks

    We discuss the time-dependent CP asymmetry of decay BϕKSB \to \phi K_S in an extension of the Standard Model with both two Higgs doublets and additional fourth-generation quarks. We show that although the Standard Model with two-Higgs-doublet and the Standard model with fourth generation quarks alone are not likely to largely change the effective sin2β\sin 2 \beta from the decay of BϕKSB \to \phi K_S , the model with both additional Higgs doublet and fourth-generation quarks can easily account for the possible large negative value of sin2β\sin 2 \beta without conflicting with other experimental constraints. In this model, additional large CP violating effects may arise from the flavor changing Yukawa interactions between neutral Higgs bosons and the heavy fourth generation down type quark, which can modify the QCD penguin contributions. With the constraints obtained from bssˉsb \to s \bar{s} s processes such as BXsγB \to X_s \gamma and ΔmBs0\Delta m_{B_s^0}, this model can lead to the effective sin2β\sin 2 \beta to be as large as 0.4- 0.4 in the CP asymmetry of BϕKSB \to \phi K_S.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, references added, to appear in Eur.Phys.J.

    Evidence for an Excess of Soft Photons in Hadronic Decays of Z^0

    Soft photons inside hadronic jets converted in front of the DELPHI main tracker (TPC) in events of qqbar disintegrations of the Z^0 were studied in the kinematic range 0.2 < E_gamma < 1 GeV and transverse momentum with respect to the closest jet direction p_T < 80 MeV/c. A clear excess of photons in the experimental data as compared to the Monte Carlo predictions is observed. This excess (uncorrected for the photon detection efficiency) is (1.17 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.27) x 10^{-3} gamma/jet in the specified kinematic region, while the expected level of the inner hadronic bremsstrahlung (which is not included in the Monte Carlo) is (0.340 +/- 0.001 +/- 0.038) x 10^{-3} gamma/jet. The ratio of the excess to the predicted bremsstrahlung rate is then (3.4 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.8), which is similar in strength to the anomalous soft photon signal observed in fixed target experiments with hadronic beams.Comment: 37 pages, 9 figures, Accepted by Eur.     Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2

    A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172 GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95% confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2, depending on the channel.     Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+μ+νW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and WμνW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     The bank vole (Myodes glareolus) as a sensitive bioassay for sheep scrapie

    Despite intensive studies on sheep scrapie, a number of questions remain unanswered, such as the natural mode of transmission and the amount of infectivity which accumulates in edible tissues at different stages of scrapie infection. Studies using the mouse model proved to be useful for recognizing scrapie strain diversity, but the low sensitivity of mice to some natural scrapie isolates hampered further investigations. To investigate the sensitivity of bank voles (Myodes glareolus) to scrapie, we performed end-point titrations from two unrelated scrapie sources. Similar titres [10(5.5) ID50 U g(-1) and 10(5.8) ID50 U g(-1), both intracerebrally (i.c.)] were obtained, showing that voles can detect infectivity up to 3-4 orders of magnitude lower when compared with laboratory mice. We further investigated the relationships between PrPSc molecular characteristics, strain and prion titre in the brain and tonsil of the same scrapie-affected sheep. We found that protease-resistant PrPSc fragments (Prp(res)) from brain and tonsil had different molecular features, but induced identical disease phenotypes in voles. The infectivity titre of the tonsil estimated by incubation time assay was 10(4.8) i.c. ID50 U g(-1), i.e. fivefold less than the brain. This compared well with the relative Prp(res) content, which was 8.8-fold less in tonsil than in brain. Our results suggest that brain and tonsil harboured the same prion strain showing different glycoprofiles in relation to the different cellular/tissue types in which it replicated, and that a PrPSc-based estimate of scrapie infectivity in sheep tissues could be achieved by combining sensitive PrPres detection methods and bioassay in voles.</p
