    Feeding of the elliptic flow by hard partons

    We propose that in nuclear collisions at the LHC the elliptic flow may get a contribution from leading hard and semihard partons which deposit energy and momentum into the hydrodynamic bulk medium. The crucial effect is that these partons induce wakes which interact and merge if they come together. The contribution to the integrated elliptic flow is estimated with the help of a toy model to about 25% of the observed value and shows strong event-by-event fluctuations.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Flow in heavy-ion collisions - Theory Perspective

    I review recent developments in the field of relativistic hydrodynamics and its application to the bulk dynamics in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy- Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In particular, I report on progress in going beyond second order relativistic viscous hydrodynamics for conformal fluids, including temperature dependent shear viscosity to entropy density ratios, as well as coupling hydrodynamic calculations to microscopic hadronic rescattering models. I describe event-by-event hydrodynamic simulations and their ability to compute higher harmonic flow coefficients. Combined comparisons of all harmonics to recent experimental data from both RHIC and LHC will potentially allow to determine the desired details of the initial state and the medium properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions.Comment: 8 pages, Invited plenary talk at the 22nd International Conference on Ultrarelativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions (Quark Matter 2011), May 23-28 2011, Annecy, Franc

    Chemical freeze-out temperature in hydrodynamical description of Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

    We study the effect of separate chemical and kinetic freeze-outs to the ideal hydrodynamical flow in Au+Au collisions at RHIC (sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV energy). Unlike in earlier studies we explore how these effects can be counteracted by changes in the initial state of the hydrodynamical evolution. We conclude that the reproduction of pion, proton and antiproton yields necessitates a chemical freeze-out temperature of T = 150 MeV instead of T = 160 - 170 MeV motivated by thermal models. Unlike previously reported, this lower temperature makes it possible to reproduce the p_T-spectra of hadrons if one assumes very small initial time, tau_0 = 0.2 fm/c. However, the p_T-differential elliptic flow, v_2(p_T) remains badly reproduced.     Signatures of Quark-Gluon-Plasma formation in high energy heavy-ion collisions: A critical review

    A critical review on signatures of Quark-Gluon-Plasma formation is given and the current (1998) experimental status is discussed. After giving an introduction to the properties of QCD matter in both, equilibrium- and non-equilibrium theories, we focus on observables which may yield experimental evidence for QGP formation. For each individual observable the discussion is divided into three sections: first the connection between the respective observable and QGP formation in terms of the underlying theoretical concepts is given, then the relevant experimental results are reviewed and finally the current status concerning the interpretation of both, theory and experiment, is discussed.     Search for Higgs bosons produced via vector-boson fusion and decaying into bottom quark pairs in √s =13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the bb ¯ decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson produced through vector-boson fusion is presented. Three mutually exclusive channels are considered: two all-hadronic channels and a photon-associated channel. Results are reported from the analysis of up to 30.6 fb −1 of pp data at s √ =13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measured signal strength relative to the Standard Model prediction from the combined analysis is 2.5 +1.4 −1.3 for inclusive Higgs boson production and 3.0 +1.7 −1.6 for vector-boson fusion production only
