    Electrical power dissipation in carbon nanotubes on single crystal quartz and amorphous SiO2

    Heat dissipation in electrically biased semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on single crystal quartz and amorphous SiO2 is examined with temperature profiles obtained by spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy. Despite the differences in phonon velocities, thermal conductivity and van der Waals interactions with CNTs, on average, heat dissipation into single crystal quartz and amorphous SiO2 is found to be similar. Large temperature gradients and local hot spots often observed underscore the complexity of CNT temperature profiles and may be accountable for the similarities observed

    Utilizing Three Years of Epidemiological Data from Medical Missions in Cambodia to Shape the Mobile Medical Clinic Formulary

    Objective: The purpose of this project was to gather epidemiological data on common diseases and medications dispensed during medical mission teams to Cambodia to shape the mobile medical clinic formulary. Methods: Data for patients seen during week-long, mobile, medical clinics was collected in Cambodia during Septembers 2012 to 2014. Patient’s gender, age, weight, blood pressure, glucose, pertinent laboratory values, diagnoses, and medications dispensed were collected. Blood pressure and glucose were measured in patients 18 years and above. Data collected onto paper intake forms were transferred onto spreadsheets without patient identifying information and analyzed for aggregate means, common diseases, and most dispensed medications. This project received institutional review board approval. Results: A total of 1,015 patients were seen over three years. Women made up 61.4% and the mean age was 41.8 years. The most common diagnosis was gastrointestinal disorders (22.9%), which included gastroesophageal reflux disease and intestinal parasites. Next, 20.1% of patients had hypertension (BP\u3e140/90), 18.0% had presbyopia, 15.4% had back and joint pain, followed by 8.8% with headache, including migraines. Approximately 8.4% of patients had hyperglycemia (RPG \u3e140 mg/dl). Top five medications dispensed were acetaminophen, omeprazole, multivitamin, ibuprofen and metformin. For hypertension, amlodipine and lisinopril were dispensed. Conclusion: Cambodia lacks systematic public health collection of epidemiological data for prevalence of diseases. Hence, investigators collected and analyzed information from week-long mobile medical clinics over three years. Proton-pump inhibitors and H. pylori lab tests are recommended for gastrointestinal disorders. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are recommended for pain. Angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors and dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers are recommended over diuretics since patients are already dehydrated. Metformin is recommended for diabetes. Vitamins and supplements are recommended for malnourished patients. Hemoglobin machine and urine test strips are suggested. This information should help future teams decide what medications and laboratory tests are most beneficial on medical teams in Cambodia

    The Scalable Modeling of Multi-layer Embedded Capacitor based on LTCC Substrate

    Abstract Low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology is the preferred platform for integrating multi-layer capacitors due to excellent high frequency performance and low-loss dielectric properties. This letter describes a novel approach to perform modeling of multi-layer capacitors in LTCC technology. This hybrid approach combines both analytical modeling and numerical modeling to provide a scalable circuit model predicting the self-resonance frequency of the multiple dielectric and electrode layers. Good correlation between the simulation results and network analyzer measurements has been also achieved. Introduction Recently, as an alternative solution for the low cost and highly integrated system with multiple functionalities, System-on-Package (SoP) technology has emerged [1] [2]. The SoP brings multiple semiconductor dies of various semiconductor processes and materials, and passive devices such as termination resistors, decoupling capacitors, inductors, waveguide, filters, and antennas into a threedimensional package, to create highly integrated products with optimized cost, size and performance. Markets for the SoP solution include wireless communication, networking, computing, and sensor and storage system applications. To integrate these multiple dies and passive devices into a tiny 3-D SoP, adoption of high-density multilayer substrate design is a common approach to mount the multiple dies on a substrate with the embedded passives, which are laterally or vertically integrated onto the package substrate.     Encapsulated fish oil products available in the UK meet regulatory guidelines with respect to EPA + DHA contents and oxidative status

    Encapsulated fish oil products continue to be of high interest, particularly concerning labelling claims and oxidative status. Thus, the present study analysed twenty‐three encapsulated fish oil products from the UK for their lipid and fatty acid composition as well as oxidation parameters. Oil contents ranged from 91.4‐118.9% of the manufacturers stated level. Lipid class analyses revealed three different types of oil products consisting of either triacylglycerol (TAG), ethyl ester (EE) or in combination (EE/TAG). Fatty acid profiles varied according to oil form with long‐chain omega‐3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), more concentrated in EE compared to TAG‐based oils with TAG/EE oils containing intermediary levels. Twelve products had EPA + DHA contents lower than advertised, although this was reduced to 11 when the actual measured capsule oil content was taken into consideration. All products had peroxide (PV) and anisidine values below those set by pharmacopeias, although four products had a PV above the industry set limit of 5 meq.kg−1. No relationships were found between oxidative parameters and missing EPA + DHA contents, although a significant relationship was observed between PV and days to expiry. In summary, encapsulated fish oil products on the UK market are not oxidized and meet regulatory guidelines with respect to EPA + DHA contents and oxidative status. Practical Applications: The study highlights the importance of quantifying the actual capsule oil content when determining EPA + DHA levels with respect to label claims. Furthermore, it also places results into context regarding regulatory guidelines demonstrating to regulatory bodies and consumers alike that UK fish oil products do meet specification and are not oxidised

    Bowel Preparation for Capsule Endoscopy: A Prospective Randomized Multicenter Study

    Background/Aims: The ability to visualize the small bowel mucosa by capsule endoscopy is limited. Moreover, studies involving small-bowel preparation with purgative drugs have failed to establish which preparations produce better images and higher diagnostic yields. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacies and diagnostic yields of different bowel preparations. Methods: A cohort of 134 patients with suspected small bowel disease was randomly assigned to 3 groups. Patients in group A (n=44) fasted for 12 h before being administered an M2A capsule (Given Imaging, Yoqneam, Israel). Patients in group B (n=45) were asked to drink two doses of 45 mL of sodium phosphate (NaP) with water during the afternoon and evening on the day before the procedure and to drink at least 2 L of water thereafter. Patients in group C (n=45) drank 2 L of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) lavage solution the evening before the procedure. Results: Overall cleansing of the small bowel was adequate in 43% of patients in group A, 77% of those in group B, and 56% of those in group C (group A vs; group B, p=0.001). Diagnoses for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding were established in 9 patients (39%) in group A, 16 patients (69%) in group B, and 14 patients (50%) in group C. No significant difference in diagnostic yield was observed between groups. Conclusions: Bowel preparation with NaP for capsule endoscopy improved small-bowel mucosal visualization when compared to 12-h overnight fasting.     Fall prevention intervention technologies: A conceptual framework and survey of the state of the art

    In recent years, an ever increasing range of technology-based applications have been developed with the goal of assisting in the delivery of more effective and efficient fall prevention interventions. Whilst there have been a number of studies that have surveyed technologies for a particular sub-domain of fall prevention, there is no existing research which surveys the full spectrum of falls prevention interventions and characterises the range of technologies that have augmented this landscape. This study presents a conceptual framework and survey of the state of the art of technology-based fall prevention systems which is derived from a systematic template analysis of studies presented in contemporary research literature. The framework proposes four broad categories of fall prevention intervention system: Pre-fall prevention; Post-fall prevention; Fall injury prevention; Cross-fall prevention. Other categories include, Application type, Technology deployment platform, Information sources, Deployment environment, User interface type, and Collaborative function. After presenting the conceptual framework, a detailed survey of the state of the art is presented as a function of the proposed framework. A number of research challenges emerge as a result of surveying the research literature, which include a need for: new systems that focus on overcoming extrinsic falls risk factors; systems that support the environmental risk assessment process; systems that enable patients and practitioners to develop more collaborative relationships and engage in shared decision making during falls risk assessment and prevention activities.     Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics of the Zero-Range Process and Related Models

    We review recent progress on the zero-range process, a model of interacting particles which hop between the sites of a lattice with rates that depend on the occupancy of the departure site. We discuss several applications which have stimulated interest in the model such as shaken granular gases and network dynamics, also we discuss how the model may be used as a coarse-grained description of driven phase-separating systems. A useful property of the zero-range process is that the steady state has a factorised form. We show how this form enables one to analyse in detail condensation transitions, wherein a finite fraction of particles accumulate at a single site. We review condensation transitions in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems and also summarise recent progress in understanding the dynamics of condensation. We then turn to several generalisations which also, under certain specified conditions, share the property of a factorised steady state.     Whacked and Rab35 polarize dynein-motor-complex-dependent seamless tube growth

    Seamless tubes form intracellularly without cell–cell or autocellular junctions. Such tubes have been described across phyla, but remain mysterious despite their simple architecture. In Drosophila, seamless tubes are found within tracheal terminal cells, which have dozens of branched protrusions extending hundreds of micrometres. We find that mutations in multiple components of the dynein motor complex block seamless tube growth, raising the possibility that the lumenal membrane forms through minus-end-directed transport of apical membrane components along microtubules. Growth of seamless tubes is polarized along the proximodistal axis by Rab35 and its apical membrane-localized GAP, Whacked. Strikingly, loss of whacked (or constitutive activation of Rab35) leads to tube overgrowth at terminal cell branch tips, whereas overexpression of Whacked (or dominant-negative Rab35) causes formation of ectopic tubes surrounding the terminal cell nucleus. Thus, vesicle trafficking has key roles in making and shaping seamless tubes
