Effects of Urban Regeneration on the Changing Housing Structures in South Korea

    Get PDF
Background: The study explored the history of South Korean housing and urban development with focus on a number of changes that have since taken place after major urban regeneration projects. The objective is to discover some of the factors behind the successes of Urban Regeneration and the National Housing and Urban Fund (NHUF) in South Korea. In the end, the impacts of NHUF are discussed with their links to various housing projects, particularly apartments. Objectives: The key research objectives include investigating how urban regeneration affected and changed the housing structures in South Korea, the changes that have come about as a result of Urban Regeneration in South Korea, the role of NHUF on the implementation of urban regeneration project in South Korea, the challenges faced by NHUF, and new ways of improving urban housing. Research Design: The study used a mixed method of data collection. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to systematically integrate data on the history of South Korean housing and urban development. Setting and location: Republic of Korea Results: The systematic reading of the regulatory plan indicated a clear divide between the central urban areas found within the municipality and the marginal that are not found within the municipality. The results indicate that from the center of the city moving outwards, the good conditions tend to slowly fade, creating room for deteriorated areas. There is also a difference based on the characteristics of the population of the cities concerned. The distribution is also based on the level of education. A higher percentage represents elementary qualifications or those without degree while lower percentages of inhabitant represent those with high levels of qualifications. Conclusion: In conclusion, it is evident that for successful urban regeneration in South Korea, the element of planning such as sustainability, urban simulation, and local identity need to be put into consideration in areas where regeneration has to be carried out. The paradigm that has emerged based on the demands of each age is determined according to the level of acceptance as well as the executions of the demands of the prevailing circumstances and time. The manner in which regeneration is realized in each region should always be diverse. The strategy of urban regeneration should therefore be considered in South Korea. Recommendations: There is need for South Korean cities to have multi-stakeholder systems to be able to adequately prepare and market their economy both locally and globally. Agencies need to collaborate to be able to develop and promote and develop the country. The national government should recognize the significance of the local communities in the process of urban regeneration.

Molecular characterization of Pvr9 that confers a hypersensitive response to Pepper mottle virus (a potyvirus) in Nicotiana benthamiana

AbstractThere are some R genes against potyviruses which were mapped in pepper. However, none of them has been characterized at the molecular level. In this study, we characterized Pvr9 which is an Rpi-blb2 ortholog from pepper and confers a hypersensitive response to Pepper mottle virus (PepMoV) in a transient expression system in Nicotiana benthamiana. This gene putatively encoded for 1298 amino acids and is located on pepper chromosome 6. PepMoV NIb was the elicitor of the Pvr9-mediated hypersensitive response. NIb from several other potyviruses also elicited the hypersensitive response. Inoculation of pepper with PepMoV resulted in a minor increase in Pvr9 transcription in the resistant cultivar CM334 and a slight down-regulation in the susceptible cultivar Floral Gem. The 5′ upstream region of Pvr9 from cultivar CM334 had higher transcription activity than the region from cultivar Floral Gem. The cultivars CM334 and Floral Gem had non-functional Pvr9 homologs with loss-of-function mutations

Spectral Density Scaling of Fluctuating Interfaces

Covariance matrix of heights measured relative to the average height of a growing self-affine surface in the steady state are investigated in the framework of random matrix theory. We show that the spectral density of the covariance matrix scales as ρ(λ)λν\rho(\lambda) \sim \lambda^{-\nu} deviating from the prediction of random matrix theory and has a scaling form, ρ(λ,L)=λνf(λ/Lϕ)\rho(\lambda, L) = \lambda^{-\nu} f(\lambda / L^{\phi}) for the lateral system size LL, where the scaling function f(x)f(x) approaches a constant for x1x \ll 1 and zero for x1x \gg 1. The obtained values of exponents by numerical simulations are ν1.73\nu \approx 1.73 and ϕ1.40\phi \approx 1.40 for the Edward-Wilkinson class and ν1.64\nu \approx 1.64 and ϕ1.79\phi \approx 1.79 for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang class, respectively. The distribution of the largest eigenvalues follows a scaling form as ρ(λmax,L)=1/Lbfmax((λmaxLa)/Lb)\rho(\lambda_{max}, L) = 1/L^b f_{max} ((\lambda_{max} -L^a)/L^b), which is different from the Tracy-Widom distribution of random matrix theory while the exponents aa and bb are given by the same values for the two different classes

    BRCA1 is a histone-H2A-specific ubiquitin ligase

The RING domain proteins BRCA1 and BARD1 comprise a heterodimeric ubiquitin (E3) ligase that is required for the accumulation of ubiquitin conjugates at sites of DNA damage and for silencing at DNA satellite repeat regions. Despite its links to chromatin, the substrate and underlying function of the BRCA1/BARD1 ubiquitin ligase remain unclear. Here, we show that BRCA1/BARD1 specifically ubiquitylates histone H2A in its C-terminal tail on lysines 127 and 129 in vitro and in vivo. The specificity for K127-129 is acquired only when H2A is within a nucleosomal context. Moreover, site-specific targeting of the BRCA1/BARD1 RING domains to chromatin is sufficient for H2Aub foci formation in vivo. Our data establish BRCA1/BARD1 as a histone-H2A-specific E3 ligase, helping to explain its localization and activities on chromatin in cells
