Unboundedness Problems for Machines with Reversal-Bounded Counters

We consider a general class of decision problems concerning formal languages, called (one-dimensional) unboundedness predicates, for automata that feature reversal-bounded counters (RBCA). We show that each problem in this class reduces-non-deterministically in polynomial time to the same problem for just nite automata. We also show an analogous reduction for automata that have access to both a push- down stack and reversal-bounded counters (PRBCA). This allows us to answer several open questions: For example, we settle the complexity of deciding whether a given (P)RBCA language L is bounded, meaning whether there exist words w1, . . . , wn with L ⊆ w1∗ · · · wn∗ . For PRBCA, even decidability was open. Our methods also show that there is no language of a (P)RBCA of intermediate growth. Part of our proof is likely of independent interest: We show that one can translate an RBCA into a machine with Z-counters in logarithmic space

Search for pair-produced resonances decaying to quark pairs in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV

A general search for the pair production of resonances, each decaying to two quarks, is reported. The search is conducted separately for heavier resonances (masses above 400 GeV), where each of the four final-state quarks generates a hadronic jet resulting in a four-jet signature, and for lighter resonances (masses between 80 and 400 GeV), where the pair of quarks from each resonance is collimated and reconstructed as a single jet resulting in a two-jet signature. In addition, a b-tagged selection is applied to target resonances with a bottom quark in the final state. The analysis uses data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1), from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The mass spectra are analyzed for the presence of new resonances, and are found to be consistent with standard model expectations. The results are interpreted in the framework of R-parity-violating supersymmetry assuming the pair production of scalar top quarks decaying via the hadronic coupling lambda ''(312) or lambda ''(323) and upper limits on the cross section as a function of the top squark mass are set. These results probe a wider range of masses than previously explored at the LHC, and extend the top squark mass limits in the (t) over tilde -> qq' scenario.Peer reviewe

“La nación mexicana llega hasta donde se encuentran los mexicanos”, fue la respuesta de un funcionario del Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) a la pregunta sobre la fundación de partidos políticos mexicanos en Estados Unidos y su participación transnacional.  Actualmente existen en los Estados Unidos estructuras organizativas de los tres partidos políticos mexicanos más importantes, los cuales buscan tomar parte en la política de su país de origen atravesando la frontera: El Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), que gobernó México por 71 años, hasta el año 2000; el Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), del recién electo presidente Felipe Calderón y el Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), que surgió del movimiento por la democratización a finales de los años ochenta. Los partidos políticos mexicanos en Estados Unidos se empezaron a formar en los años noventa. Aunque todavía tienen estructuras muy dispersas, hay un proceso de expansion de grupos de apoyo, comités de base y comités estatales, principalmente en California, Texas, Nueva York, Illinois y Nuevo México.
