The Far-Infrared Properties of Spatially Resolved AKARI Observations
We present the spatially resolved observations of IRAS sources from the
Japanese infrared astronomy satellite AKARI All-Sky Survey during the
performance verification (PV) phase of the mission. We extracted reliable point
sources matched with IRAS point source catalogue. By comparing IRAS and AKARI
fluxes, we found that the flux measurements of some IRAS sources could have
been over or underestimated and affected by the local background rather than
the global background. We also found possible candidates for new AKARI sources
and confirmed that AKARI observations resolved IRAS sources into multiple
sources. All-Sky Survey observations are expected to verify the accuracies of
IRAS flux measurements and to find new extragalactic point sources.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted publication in PASJ AKARI special issu
The association between prescription drugs and vaccines commonly prescribed to older people and bullous pemphigoid: a UK population-based study
IntroductionBullous pemphigoid (BP) is a serious skin disease that results in large painful blisters developing over the body and occurs most commonly in older people (over 70 years). Despite several comorbidities such as stroke and a threefold increase in mortality, BP remains under-researched. The cause of BP is unclear. The auto-immune process may be triggered by medicines such as diuretics, but current evidence mainly comprises case-reports and small hospital-based studies. Electronic healthcare records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) provide an opportunity to conduct a large population-based study, representative of people with BP in the UK, to assess exposure to prescribed medicines. Early identification of BP and prompt withdrawal of suspect medicines may lead to BP remission and improve long-term patient outcomes, including quality of life. We aim to determine whether medicines/vaccines, prescribed for common conditions in older people, are associated with BP in the UK population. The objectives are:i.To determine the adjusted odds ratio of developing BP per therapeutic group and class, and for multiple exposure (i.e. the use of more than one therapeutic group of medicine/vaccine during the observation period), for medicines/vaccines commonly prescribed to older people in the UK.ii.To identify which of the above are less associated with risk of BP, giving clinicians/prescribers alternative treatment options.iii.To identify additional medicines associated with BP using machine learning.iv.To identify associations between combinations of medicines prescribed to BP patients using machine learning.v.To describe patient characteristics of those at risk of BP, following medicine use, using machine learning.MethodsA UK population-based nested case-control study using the CPRD to determine associations between identified medicines/vaccines and BP. BP cases will be matched to up to 4 controls (age, sex, GP practice) using incidence density sampling. Exposure: medicines/vaccines commonly prescribed for older people; antibacterial, medicine for the cardiovascular system, stroke, diabetes, dementia, and influenza vaccination in the year leading up to diagnosis. Outcome measures: the odds of BP per therapeutic group, per class, and individual medicine; (reference=no exposure). Analysis: multivariable conditional logistic regression adjusted for a priori confounders. Confounding by indication will be considered and different exposure criteria assessed. We will undertake exploratory association rule mining to identify individual and combinations of medicines prescribed prior to BP. We will conduct unsupervised machine learning cluster analysis to identify groups of patients with demographic and clinical characteristics and their associations with prescribed medicines linked to BP.DiscussionThis study will (i) provide greater awareness of the risk of drug-associated BP amongst specialist and non-specialist healthcare professionals and therefore may facilitate earlier diagnosis of BP; (ii) support withdrawal of suspect medicines and switching to alternatives, where available, to achieve earlier remission of BP

As cold as a fish? Relationships between the Dark Triad personality traits and affective experience during the day: A day reconstruction study
The Dark Triad of personality is a cluster of three socially aversive personality traits: Machiavellianism,
narcissism and psychopathy. These traits are associated with a selfish, aggressive
and exploitative interpersonal strategy. The objective of the current study was to
establish relationships between the Dark Triad traits (and their dimensions) and momentary
affect. Machiavellianism, grandiose narcissism, vulnerable narcissism and the dimensions
of the Triarchic model of psychopathy (namely, boldness, meanness and disinhibition) were
examined. We used the Day Reconstruction Method, which is based on reconstructing
affective states experienced during the previous day. The final sample consisted of 270 university
students providing affective ratings of 3047 diary episodes. Analyses using multilevel
modelling showed that only boldness had a positive association with positive affective states
and affect balance, and a negative association with negative affective states. Grandiose
narcissism and its sub-dimensions had no relationship with momentary affect. The other
dark traits were related to negative momentary affect and/or inversely related to positive
momentary affect and affect balance. As a whole, our results empirically demonstrated distinctiveness
of the Dark Triad traits in their relationship to everyday affective states. These
findings are not congruent with the notion that people with the Dark Triad traits, who have a
dispositional tendency to manipulate and exploit others, are generally cold and invulnerable
to negative feelings. The associations between the Dark Triad and momentary affect were
discussed in the contexts of evolutionary and positive psychology, in relation to the role and
adaptive value of positive and negative emotions experienced by individuals higher in

First measurement of the |t|-dependence of coherent J/ψ photonuclear production
The first measurement of the cross section for coherent J/ψ photoproduction as a function of |t|, the square of the momentum transferred between the incoming and outgoing target nucleus, is presented. The data were measured with the ALICE detector in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=5.02TeV with the J/ψ produced in the central rapidity region |y|<0.8, which corresponds to the small Bjorken-x range (0.3−1.4)×10−3.
The measured |t|-dependence is not described by computations based only on the Pb nuclear form factor, while the photonuclear cross section is better reproduced by models including shadowing according to the leading-twist approximation, or gluon-saturation effects from the impact-parameter dependent Balitsky–Kovchegov equation. These new results are therefore a valid tool to constrain the relevant model parameters and to investigate the transverse gluonic structure at very low Bjorken-x.publishedVersio
LeishVet update and recommendations on feline leishmaniosis
Limited data is available on feline leishmaniosis (FeL) caused by Leishmania infantum worldwide. The LeishVet group presents in this report a review of the current knowledge on FeL, the epidemiological role of the cat in L. infantum infection, clinical manifestations, and recommendations on diagnosis, treatment and monitoring, prognosis and prevention of infection, in order to standardize the management of this disease in cats. The consensus of opinions and recommendations was formulated by combining a comprehensive review of evidence-based studies and case reports, clinical experience and critical consensus discussions. While subclinical feline infections are common in areas endemic for canine leishmaniosis, clinical illness due to L. infantum in cats is rare. The prevalence rates of feline infection with L. infantum in serological or molecular-based surveys range from 0 % to more than 60 %. Cats are able to infect sand flies and, therefore, they may act as a secondary reservoir, with dogs being the primary natural reservoir. The most common clinical signs and clinicopathological abnormalities compatible with FeL include lymph node enlargement and skin lesions such as ulcerative, exfoliative, crusting or nodular dermatitis (mainly on the head or distal limbs), ocular lesions (mainly uveitis), feline chronic gingivostomatitis syndrome, mucocutaneous ulcerative or nodular lesions, hypergammaglobulinaemia and mild normocytic normochromic anaemia. Clinical illness is frequently associated with impaired immunocompetence, as in case of retroviral coinfections or immunosuppressive therapy. Diagnosis is based on serology, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), cytology, histology, immunohistochemistry (IHC) or culture. If serological testing is negative or low positive in a cat with clinical signs compatible with FeL, the diagnosis of leishmaniosis should not be excluded and additional diagnostic methods (cytology, histology with IHC, PCR, culture) should be employed. The most common treatment used is allopurinol. Meglumine antimoniate has been administered in very few reported cases. Both drugs are administered alone and most cats recover clinically after therapy. Follow-up of treated cats with routine laboratory tests, serology and PCR is essential for prevention of clinical relapses. Specific preventative measures for this infection in cats are currently not available
Resolving the strange behavior of extraterrestrial potassium in the upper atmosphere
It has been known since the 1960s that the layers of Na and K atoms, which occur between 80 and 105 km in the Earth's atmosphere as a result of meteoric ablation, exhibit completely different seasonal behavior. In the extratropics Na varies annually, with a pronounced wintertime maximum and summertime minimum. However, K varies semiannually with a small summertime maximum and minima at the equinoxes. This contrasting behavior has never been satisfactorily explained. Here we use a combination of electronic structure and chemical kinetic rate theory to determine two key differences in the chemistries of K and Na. First, the neutralization of K+ ions is only favored at low temperatures during summer. Second, cycling between K and its major neutral reservoir KHCO3 is essentially temperature independent. A whole atmosphere model incorporating this new chemistry, together with a meteor input function, now correctly predicts the seasonal behavior of the K layer
Flow Dominance and Factorization of Transverse Momentum Correlations in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC
We present the first measurement of the two-particle transverse momentum differential correlation function, P2≡ ΔpTΔpT/ pT2, in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV. Results for P2 are reported as a function of the relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal angle (Δφ) between two particles for different collision centralities. The Δφ dependence is found to be largely independent of Δη for |Δη|≥0.9. In the 5% most central Pb-Pb collisions, the two-particle transverse momentum correlation function exhibits a clear double-hump structure around Δφ=π (i.e., on the away side), which is not observed in number correlations in the same centrality range, and thus provides an indication of the dominance of triangular flow in this collision centrality. Fourier decompositions of P2, studied as a function of the collision centrality, show that correlations at |Δη|≥0.9 can be well reproduced by a flow ansatz based on the notion that measured transverse momentum correlations are strictly determined by the collective motion of the system
