Quasivariational solutions for first order quasilinear equations with gradient constraint
We prove the existence of solutions for an evolution quasi-variational
inequality with a first order quasilinear operator and a variable convex set,
which is characterized by a constraint on the absolute value of the gradient
that depends on the solution itself. The only required assumption on the
nonlinearity of this constraint is its continuity and positivity. The method
relies on an appropriate parabolic regularization and suitable {\em a priori}
estimates. We obtain also the existence of stationary solutions, by studying
the asymptotic behaviour in time. In the variational case, corresponding to a
constraint independent of the solution, we also give uniqueness results
Inflation and the Scale Dependent Spectral Index: Prospects and Strategies
We consider the running of the spectral index as a probe of both inflation
itself, and of the overall evolution of the very early universe. Surveying a
collection of simple single field inflationary models, we confirm that the
magnitude of the running is relatively consistent, unlike the tensor amplitude,
which varies by orders of magnitude. Given this target, we confirm that the
running is potentially detectable by future large scale structure or 21 cm
observations, but that only the most futuristic measurements can distinguish
between these models on the basis of their running. For any specified
inflationary scenario, the combination of the running index and unknown
post-inflationary expansion history induces a theoretical uncertainty in the
predicted value of the spectral index. This effect can easily dominate the
statistical uncertainty with which Planck and its successors are expected to
measure the spectral index. More positively, upcoming cosmological experiments
thus provide an intriguing probe of physics between TeV and GUT scales by
constraining the reheating history associated with any specified inflationary
model, opening a window into the "primordial dark age" that follows the end of

On the statistical significance of the conductance quantization
Recent experiments on atomic-scale metallic contacts have shown that the
quantization of the conductance appears clearly only after the average of the
experimental results. Motivated by these results we have analyzed a simplified
model system in which a narrow neck is randomly coupled to wide ideal leads,
both in absence and presence of time reversal invariance. Based on Random
Matrix Theory we study analytically the probability distribution for the
conductance of such system. As the width of the leads increases the
distribution for the conductance becomes sharply peaked close to an integer
multiple of the quantum of conductance. Our results suggest a possible
statistical origin of conductance quantization in atomic-scale metallic

Measurement of the photon-jet production differential cross section in collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96~\TeV
We present measurements of the differential cross section dsigma/dpT_gamma
for the inclusive production of a photon in association with a b-quark jet for
photons with rapidities |y_gamma|< 1.0 and 30<pT_gamma <300 GeV, as well as for
photons with 1.5<|y_gamma|< 2.5 and 30< pT_gamma <200 GeV, where pT_gamma is
the photon transverse momentum. The b-quark jets are required to have pT>15 GeV
and rapidity |y_jet| < 1.5. The results are based on data corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb^-1, recorded with the D0 detector at the
Fermilab Tevatron Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. The measured cross
sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations
using different sets of parton distribution functions as well as to predictions
based on the kT-factorization QCD approach, and those from the Sherpa and

A Two-Field Quintessence Model
We study the dynamics of a quintessence model based on two interacting scalar
fields. The model can account for the (recent) accelerated expansion of the
Universe suggested by astronomical observations. Acceleration can be permanent
or temporary and, for both scenarios, it is possible to obtain suitable values
for the cosmological parameters while satisfying the nucleosynthesis constraint
on the quintessence energy density. We argue that the model dynamics can be
made consistent with a stable zero-energy relaxing supersymmetric vacuum.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.
An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics
For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
Search for pair production of the scalar top quark in the electron-muon final state
We report the result of a search for the pair production of the lightest
supersymmetric partner of the top quark () in
collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron
collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb. The scalar
top quarks are assumed to decay into a quark, a charged lepton, and a
scalar neutrino (), and the search is performed in the electron
plus muon final state. No significant excess of events above the standard model
prediction is detected, and improved exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. are set
in the the (,) mass plane
Measurement of spin correlation in ttbar production using dilepton final states
We measure the correlation between the spin of the top quark and the spin of
the anti-top quark in (ttbar -> W+ W- b bbar -> l+ nu b l- nubar bbar) final
states produced in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.96
TeV, where l is an electron or muon. The data correspond to an integrated
luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 and were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab
Tevatron collider. The correlation is extracted from the angles of the two
leptons in the t and tbar rest frames, yielding a correlation strength C=
0.10^{+0.45}_{-0.45}, in agreement with the NLO QCD prediction within two
